Persona 5 Becomes Fastest Selling Game In The Series In Japan

Persona-5

It’s official, Persona 5 has become the fastest selling entry in the series since the franchises debut 20 years ago.

In it’s opening week (via 4gamer), the game has sold 337k copies across both platforms, with the PS4 version selling 264k copies and the PS3 version selling 73k copies.

It’s worth noting that this number only counts the first three days of sales, seeing as these numbers were from the week of September 12th to September 18th, with the game only releasing on August 15th.

To put it in perspective, the highest selling Persona game in Japan is the first entry in the series, originally released in 1996 for the PS1. The game sold 391k copies in its entire lifetime, meaning that Persona 5 is well on its way to becoming the highest selling game in the franchise.

Persona 5 is slated to release in North America and Europe on February 14th, 2017 for both the PS4 and PS3.

offcourse considering the japanese voice acting and overall game is great while we all still gotta wait and see what is censored or badly translate in the western version.

Not that i’m worried i’ll be importing it when its filthy cheap ATLUS not gonna get my money with half-baked localizations.

One would think P3 and P4 would’ve sold better back in the PS2 days if only because there were so many more consoles around at the time, but this makes sense when you consider the reality of the market already being saturated with JRPG’s at the time… compared to P5 arguably being the only “big budget” one around nowadays.

It’s time for Persona 5 Dancing All Night, Persona 5 Arena, Persona 5 Ruby, Persona K: Kart, Persona Party, Persona 5 The Animation and 8 years from now when they’re done miling it we will get 6.

February can’t come soon enough. Actually, no, give me some time to go through SMTIV: Apocalypse and Final Fantasy XV.

You think? There hasn’t been many japanese-styled games that sold better in the west than in Japan, has there?

The only thing that comes to my mind are Suda51’s games.

Ni No Kuni,Persona 4 Golden, whole Compile Heart library and so on.
All these games sold better in the west. The reason why we have so many japanese games coming here is because the japanese market is not profitable enough anymore.
Ni No Kuni was a flop before coming overseas and it’s probably thanks to us that Ni No Kuni 2 is coming.

Good on them, but it won’t outsell Final Fantasy 15 if they’re wishing for that. Persona sales has always been pretty low and P5 won’t change that. It will never exceed its plateau.

    I’m not surprised, really.
The persona games have become a lot more well known, especially in the west.

I have no doubt that it will be the fastest and best selling entry in the series.

Honestly, while FF15 may reach 7-10 million copies sold, it also costs a lot more, and Square will call it disappointing sales. Persona 5, as a smaller budget game, will likely exceed estimates and gain more traction.

Pro evolution 2017 made 3rd and 4th place on PS4 and PS3 respectively. With the press Konami has been receiving I don’t know how that’s possible, but it happened.

Actually now that I think about it, most of the people I know who play sports games usually don’t know much about gaming as a whole. It’d make sense if this sort of thing flew under their radar.

You know that this is a statement for the success of Persona 4 more so than Persona 5, right? Persona 5 only just released and yet Japan is crazy about it enough to buy the game so soon! Why?
Because people expect quality equal-to or even better than its predecessor.

Ultimately we have yet to see if P5 is the blockbuster newcomer Atlus is hoping it will be, and we won’t see that until we look at lasting sales once the release hype ends and what the common player thinks of it.

For now, this great sales landmark is great for P5’s charisma, but it’s really thanks to the success of Persona 4 that P5 had enough hype and expectation built for it that it would make such a splash on release.

We have more console players here in the west. In Japan sales of 50,000 as considered excellent, but in America that would be considered a complete commercial failure. To some companies anything less than 1 million in sales overall could be considered such.

Can a thing really be called niche once it’s gained enough clout to advertise with the Tokyo Tower?

Some mainstream anime games like Dragon Ball Xenoverse also sold better in the west. In Japan, it only sold decently on Sony platforms, and it bombed on Xbox platforms for obvious reasons (and the PC version was never released over there). Meanwhile, in the west, it sold well across all platforms, which is why Xenoverse 2 is on PS4/XB1/PC in the west, but PS4 exclusive in Japan.

Yeah, it’s really frustrating how Atlus USA held a Twitter poll to gauge fans’ interest on Japanese VA, only to say that the western version won’t have it and that they’re “looking into it”.

The cast for Persona 5 is amazing. Jun Fukuyama (Lelouch) Nana Mizuki (amazing singer), Aoi Yuki (huge resume for her age), and Haruka Tomatsu (Asuna). I want to give them proper thanks and also to show support for the passed away Miyu Matsuki.

Same held true for Persona 4. It owed it’s initial popularity to P3 and FES. As well as alternate colors and more vibrant style that was pretty quickly shown.
