Paid DLC is a Possibility for No Man’s Sky

no man's sky 08-18-16-1

While No Man’s Sky boss Sean Murray recently told Red Bull that all future content for the game would be free, now it seems like anything is possible for the game’s post-launch content.

Murray slightly redacted his statement, via an interview with the Daily Star. Speaking with the outlet, he said that he was “perhaps naive” when he said paid DLC wouldn’t come to the game.

He also said that it could happen if “maybe in the future there’s some reason why we just couldn’t possibly afford to do a certain feature without charging for it.”

You can find our impressions of the retail version of No Man’s Sky here. Do you own the game, and if so, how do you feel about its pre-launch and post-launch handling?

I like how most of what this guy promised is already doable in a game called space engineers; I wonder what their excuses will be in light of this.

Yeah I never got the impression he was just lying through his teeth for the sake of trying to deceive people (like, for example, Randy Pitchford or Keiji Inafune) but rather was just hopelessly naive about what he could actually accomplish with his games.

Not that he deserves a free pass. You’d think over the years he’d realize that maybe he shouldn’t promise the world like that but he just didn’t.

In synthesis NMS was advertised with feature that ended up missing in the release version. Notably the absence of multiplayer

this reddit post list, several but not all, of the missing feature along with a link to a sony advertisement or a sean murray cite

    https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/4y4i3a/wheres_the_nms_we_were_sold_on_front_page/

To cope for the missing feature, Sean M. Promised there will not be DLC and just patches adding features. then he retracted that claim, as pointed by the article on this site. Thus enraging everyone for lying repeatedly

In addition, the PC version run with unstable fps, hitches, and is only compatible with processors capable to run the SSE 4.1a instruction, otherwise it crash on startup

Hope that sum the controversy up

$60 for a game where everything is randomized and nothing has depth. Fly to planet, mine, fly to planet mine, fly to planet mine. No proper multiplayer, basic FPS gameplay, limited inventory space.

Buyers suffering from regret: “They’ll fix it in the future! They’ll have DLC and multiplayer!”

Hello Games: “Lol you’ll pay for those DLCs, you stupid cunts. And we didn’t say we’re fixing shit.”

im impressed that i could be so wrong about a person. i actually thought hes more person and gamer than buisnessman and run of the mill corporate developer.

hell i dont know yet how the gameindustry works from inside so he might actually have good resons for this.

but how about before you ask for more money for stuff to put into the game you put the stuff in you promised the 60 dollars would get us?

  51. OldPalpy
    OldPalpy
    August 19, 2016 at 2:21 am

Yeah if they wanted to justify that 60 dollars they could have talked about that pircetag going towards free updates the sort of which would guarantee the game a long tail in purchases as said updates attracts in people who didn’t see the base game as being worth 60 bucks. It’s possible he’s being forced to be a businessman here for budgetary reasons but it’s also possible that he’s looking at the sales numbers and wanting to see how far he can get with paid DLC.

  52. OldPalpy

Don’t trust small indie devs who promise games with giant scopes while never going into what the actual meat and potatoes of the game is until right up to it’s release. That’s the lesson that needs to be learned here but I assume a narrative will be pushed that it’s only Sony’s fault.

  53. Kain Yusanagi

Because Sony is where the money comes from, and Sony is who does the marketting/marketting budget, so what Sony says, goes. They also have to sign off on all such publicity stunts. There’s a reason the publishers get slammed harder than the devs for marketting snafus. The devs in this case also failed hard on delivering a decent product, even without the hype.
