New Pokemon, Hyper Training, Competition Features Confirmed for Pokemon Sun and Moon

Nintendo has confirmed a bunch of new Pokemon for Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon, as well as some new features coming to the games.

First up, a new trailer was revealed, introducing the six new Pokemon: Wimpod, Bounsweet, Comfey, Mudsdale, Bewear, and Mimikyu.

New features for Pokemon Global Link were announced, as well as a new Hyper Training function that will enable trainers to further increase their Pokemon’s power. You can find those detailed below:

New features are coming to Pokémon Global Link, a website that connects players around the world who are enjoying the Pokémon series. Pokémon Global Link will be ending its current Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon X, and Pokémon Y service and will be updated to make it compatible with Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon and introduce Friendly Competitions, a new function which has been created to allow players to become competition hosts and host their own original competitions where they can set the regulations. Two types of Friendly Competition will be available, Online and Live.

  • Online Competitions – These are competitions which are played over the internet. Players will be matched with an opponent and compete against each other for the best rating. These competitions can be open to Pokémon Trainers all over the world, or they can be set to only allow pre-approved Trainers to enter.
  • Live Competitions – These competitions allow players to host a competition and play together with friends and other Trainers who are in the same space. The Digital Player ID that contains competition regulations is generated as a QR Code, and by scanning the QR code into a 3DS system, participants can join and battle according to the set regulations.

Also announced is the new Hyper Training function which can be used to increase Pokémon’s power. Traditionally, Pokémon grow stronger by raising their levels and increasing their base stats, however, such power is still affected by the individual strengths innate to each Pokémon. Hyper training allows Pokémon that have grown to Lv. 100 to increase their individual strengths, which has not been possible in previous Pokémon games. You can now make your Lv. 100 Pokémon even stronger. Hyper training is done by Mr. Hyper, a new character who can be found somewhere in the Alola region. By using Bottle Caps, a new item which is obtainable in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, players will be able to carry out Hyper Training on their Pokémon. The mythical Pokémon Magearna, which is planned for distribution in North America later this year, will be distributed with a Bottle Cap held item.

You can get introductions for each of the six new Pokemon, below:

pokemon sun pokemon moon 07-19-16-6

Name: Wimpod

Type: Bug/Water

Wimpod is the Turn Tail Pokémon. This Pokémon is a cowardly scavenger that eats or stores anything that’s been dropped in the sea meaning it is highly valued across the Alola region as a cleaner of the sea. Wimpod has the new Ability Wimp Out which causes this Pokémon to run away or swap out for another Pokémon when its HP drops below half in battle.

pokemon sun pokemon moon 07-19-16-2

Name: Bounsweet

Type: Grass

Bounsweet is the Fruit Pokémon which gives off a delicious aroma. This aroma has a calming effect on humans, so many people across Alola let them live inside their homes as an air freshener.

pokemon sun pokemon moon 07-19-16-3

Name: Comfey

Type: Fairy

The Posey Picker Pokémon Comfey picks flowers which it carries around with it. Comfey uses its soothing aroma to help treat people and Pokémon at Pokémon Centers and hospitals.

pokemon sun pokemon moon 07-19-16-5

Name: Mudsdale

Mudslade is the Draft Horse Pokémon with incredible power and stamina. Its legs are coated in a protective mud and its kick can destroy a car in a single blow. Mudslade has the Ability Stamina, a new Ability which raises a Pokémon’s Defense by one when hit by an attack.

pokemon sun pokemon moon 07-19-16-1

Name: Bewear

Bewear is the Strong Arm Pokémon that must never be approached carelessly. With its strong and highly developed arms and legs, Bewear loves to give crushing bear hugs that will split anything in two.

pokemon sun pokemon moon 07-19-16-4

As the Disguised Pokémon, Mimikyu lives its life constantly covered by its cloth. Mimikyu’s Disguise Ability allows it to escape danger from an enemy’s attack once, then its appearance changes.

The last one looks like something I would draw as fan art with crayons if I was five.

Mimikyu seems kind of lazy. The others are fine though.

Glad to hear that its now possible to make level 100 Pokemon stronger. Kinda sucks to reach level 100 and not have EV trained properly.

OK I just fell in love with Bewear and Mimikyu.
    Some other things of note:
    – In past games, if you adjusted the EVs of a level 100 Pokemon, it would change its stats. I wonder if Hyper Training is an additional stat gain on top of the maximums, or if Hyper Training lets you “re-write” IVs? Serebii’s current assumption is that: http://serebii.net/sunmoon/hypertraining.shtml
IV breeding was a big issue. Depending on how easy Bottle Caps are to find, this could be a god-send. It’s also a sly reference to the anime, where James collects bottle caps.

    – Mudsdale has a new attack. That, or one of the kicking moves has an animation now showing a horse-shoe.

Very cool. Here’s hoping the post game is more fulfilling. Won’t buy until I see some reviews.

A level 100 poke can change it’s stats. If the EVs are changed (reset bags, etc) then the stats change immediately.

    That’s literally the point.

It’s literally a Pokemon that suppose to be a 5-year old’s rendition of Pikachu. It’s wearing a defective Pikachu toy covering as a disguise. Hence the “Disguise Pokemon.”

Where were you people last week?

The guro fanart is going to have a field day when they find out bounsweet is based on a sliced-open mangosteen. Just imagine a top-level restaurant serving these little things and you stab them with a fork to pluck their sweet innards.

Mudsdale looks ace, and that ability is cool. But I’m guessing its stats won’t reflect it being a defensively-oriented Pokemon.

Yeah gen one was filled with nothing but finely crafted, totally original mons. Featuring such gems as: a ball, a ball that’s flipped upside down, a bird, a different bird, a three headed bird, a magnet, three magnets, a bunch of vines, a bunch of cracked eggs, a blob, another blob, yet another blob that’s a little bigger, a vagina, a snake who’s name is snake spelled backwards, another snake who’s name is cobra spelled backwards but with a ‘k’ instead. goro from mortal kombat, a bull with three tails, and whatever the fuck Jynx is supposed to be.

I’m really not okay with the way Nintendo kills off support for the online features of their pokemon games as soon as the new one comes out.

It’d be one thing if they removed the menu options or patched them out, but they’re just practicing slash-and-burn development, leaving gaping holes in their legacy titles in the rush to push new products. Older pre-DS pokemon games, you really could trade with people and “Catch em all.” Now there are too many exclusives and events, and when a service like Pokemon Dream World ends, you lose a nonessential but still important part of the game.

I am extremely interested in this Hyper Training too. One of the best features of Gen VI was making EV training extremely easy with horde battles, super training, the tracking of EV’s, and the capping of EV’s towards one stat at 252 compared to previous gen’s at 255 thus wasting stats. Another cool feature was IV training actually became easier too with legendaries (excluding gift legendaries) and Pokemon caught in the Friend Safari having at least three perfect IV’s. Or how the destiny knot shortened IV breeding by passing on 5/12 of the parents IV’s instead of the traditional 3/12 IV’s in prior games.

If this Hyper Training allows you to manipulate and keep track of your IV’s that would be a godsend. It would also make special sweepers who rely on hidden power for coverage easier to weild. Contrary to what many people believe the sixth generation made the Pokemon meta-game a lot more accessible by relying less on the random number generator.

I look forward to seeing what the seventh generation will offer in terms of the Meta game! ^^

Mudsdale is an obvious choice for a (hopefully) fast ground/rock type. Beware and Mimikyu better have badass evolutions. I get Mimikyu is supposed to be a little ghost wearing a sheet, but Beware just looks like a carnival prize.
