Love Letter to Classic Japanese Shmups XYDONIA Looks Awesome

Italian developer Breaking Bytes has launched their throwback shoot ’em up XYDONIA onto Kickstarter.

The game is boldly positioned as a true love letter to classic 1990’s, and features lots of nifty options like customizing your equipment, a ridiculous YM2151+Sega PCM soundtrack with music from legendary composers Shinji Hosoe and Keishi Yonao, three unique characters, three different weapon types, and more.

Featured above, you can view a brand new trailer for the game, which is being developed by a trio of die-hard fans of the genre. Fans can expect it to be reminiscent of classics like R-Type, Gradius and Darius, while also having its own identity. Regardless, the game oozes nostalgia and even has a CRT filter to make those pixels look nice and fuzzy!

Here’s a breakdown of the game, via Scarlet Moon Productions:

xydonia 06-30-16-1

XYDONIA takes place in the year 30XX, where technology has made space travel commonplace. However, the legacy of planet XYDONIA’s inhabitants still remains a mystery to this day. Countless adventurers and opportunists have ventured in search of the remains of this ancient civilization and its homeworld, but none of them returned. Now it’s time to uncover Xydonia’s coordinates and discover its darkest secrets for yourself.

Kickstarter backers will get a copy of the game for just 10€–a 33% discount from retail–while higher tiers will include rewards such as the soundtrack, backers’ personal likenesses featured in the game, and contributing to the design of enemies, bosses, or even a new playable character. XYDONIA is planned for release on PC in 2017 with other platforms to be added as Kickstarter stretch goals are reached.

Here are the game’s key features:

  • A return to the golden age of shmups with hardcore ’90s arcade action
  • A varied roster of characters, each with their own unique play style
  • A killer YM2151+Sega PCM soundtrack featuring shmup legends Shinji Hosoe and Keishi Yonao
  • Multiple paths of destruction for extended replayability and challenge
  • Customize each playthrough with different equipment and assist characters
  • A unique “scavenge” system that allows purchasing of upgrades and more
  • Easy to learn, hard to master scoring/ranking system
  • Old-school 16-bit Neo Geo style 2D graphics
  • Two-player Co-op

XYDONIA was greenlit on Steam, and is halfway to its funding goal of $22,223, which secures the game for a PC release. Should the game earn a little more, it’ll come to Mac and Linux. There’s also stretch goals for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PS Vita, and even the Nintendo 3DS.
