New Trailer for Pokemon Sun and Moon Shows Off New Alola Region, New Pokedex

Nintendo has shared a new trailer for Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon.

Featured above, the new trailer showcases the game’s new region, Alola, as well as its new legendary Pokemon, a QR scanner, and the brand new Pokedex.

The new Pokedex actually has a Rotom Pokemon within it. The new legendaries are Solgaleo and Lunala.

Here’s a full breakdown for the game’s new information, via The Pokemon Company:

Legendary Pokemon

pokemon sun pokemon moon 06-02-16-2

Name: Solgaleo

Category: Sunne Pokémon

Height: 11′02″

Weight: 507.1 lbs.

Type: Psychic/Steel

Ability: Full Metal Body

Honored as an emissary of the sun since ancient times, Solgaleo is referred to with reverence as “the beast that devours the sun.” Solgaleo’s body holds a vast amount of energy, and it shines with light when it is active. It has a flowing mane with a remarkable resemblance to the sun. Its signature move is Sunsteel Strike, an attack that charges at an opponent with the force of a meteor, disregarding the target’s Ability. Solgaleo’s Ability is Full Metal Body, a new Ability that no previous Pokémon has had. With the Full Metal Body Ability, a Pokémon’s stats will not be lowered by the effects of an opponent’s moves or Ability.

pokemon sun pokemon moon 06-02-16-3

Name: Lunala

Category: Moone Pokémon

Height: 13′01″

Weight: 264.6 lbs.

Type: Psychic/Ghost

Ability: Shadow Shield

Since ancient times, Lunala has been honored as an emissary of the moon. Referred to with reverence as “the beast that calls the moon,” Lunala is constantly absorbing light and converting it into energy. With its wings spread to absorb the surrounding light and glittering like the crescent moon, it resembles a beautiful night sky. Lunala’s signature Moongeist Beam attack releases an ominous beam of light that disregards the target’s Ability. Lunala’s Ability is Shadow Shield, a new Ability that no previous Pokémon has had. With the Shadow Shield Ability, a Pokémon will take less damage from an attack that lands when the Pokémon has full HP.

Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon 06-02-16-(7)

Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon take place in the Alola region, which centers around four tropical islands and one artificial island. Many Pokémon that have never been seen before inhabit the lush islands of the Alola region. The story begins right after the main character moves to the Alola region. After choosing to play as a hero or heroine, players can customize their character’s name and appearance. No sooner have they arrived than their adventures begin to unfold, and they meet many fascinating people as they travel through the region.

Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon 06-02-16-(3)

Professor Kukui is the Alola region’s Pokémon professor. The professor is passionate about his research into Pokémon moves and has sometimes taken direct hits from Pokémon if there was something to be learned from it. Sporting a white lab coat, Professor Kukui has his own unique style.

Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon 06-02-16-(4)

Lillie is a mysterious girl who assists the professor. This young girl is about the same age as the player’s character and is Professor Kukui’s assistant. She’s not fond of making Pokémon fight in battles, but she loves reading and has read a great number of books. Lillie will play an important role in the story of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon.

Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon 06-02-16-(1)

Hau is a Pokémon-loving young boy with a big appetite. He is the same age as the player’s character. Hau becomes one of the main character’s first friends. He has a real weakness for malasadas, a famous treat in the Alola region, and is always in search of malasada shops. Hau is a big-hearted boy who really loves Pokémon.

New Pokedex

Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon 06-02-16-(8)

The Pokédex is a convenient tool that records information about the Pokémon that players see and catch during their adventure. In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, Professor Kukui provides a special Pokédex known as the Rotom Pokédex. It is inhabited by Rotom, a Pokémon with the power to reside in various electronic appliances. The Rotom Pokédex does much more than record Pokémon info—it has its own personality. Besides showing the player’s current location and their next destination, the Rotom Pokédex also provides advice on where to go next, based on the conversations players have with other characters.

In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, a QR Scanner function allows players to see information about Pokémon when they scan QR Code patterns. By scanning in special QR Code patterns, fans can register Pokémon of the Alola region to their Pokédex and find out where they live. If they scan in the QR Code for a Pokémon that they haven’t yet caught, players can check its habitat and search it out.

Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon will launch on November 18th in North America and on November 23rd in Europe.

Female player and Lillie are kind of underwhelming. Still it’s nice to see them continue the tradition of the female player wearing shorts and skirts to show off the legs~

The series has places in many people’s hearts.

And also because it’s Pokemon, a very big name that can easily catch the lowest common denominators’ attention, especially children, who are a profitable market.

Rotom Pokedex sounds like it’ll either be great or “Chip from Sonic Unleashed”-tier horrible. Hoping for the former obviously.

Partially nostalgia, partially brand recognition (parents buying their children the thing they liked as kids), and some of it is because despite being pretty much the same thing every generation they’re still pretty fun (at least in my opinion.) If it ain’t broke don’t fix it and all that.

    Seems interesting.

    – Past games have had scientists thinking of ways to “get Pokemon to communicate with you.” Will Dex Rotom translate for your Pokemon like Rocket’s Meowth in the anime? Or will Rotom serve as a guide for younger players (do this thing you were just told to do) and hopefully can it be toggled off? But it does seem like the Pokedex has a tablet design.

    – The UI for battles has a crayon or paint scribble effect for the HP bars and ability cut-ins. Not sure how I feel.

    – Full Metal Body (from what we’ve seen so far) functions identically to Clear Body (an ability several Pokemon have), it might be that Galaleo’s version has additional effects (can’t be negated or Skill Swapped away), or is just the same ability under a different name.

    – When looking at the map Kukwei shows you, a cloud covers the bottom left area. Is this a post-Champion area for you to explore, or a secret island you visit during the main game (Legendary Pokemon’s lair for example).

Other than that, we’ve got “friendly” rivals again, and no idea on rebalance (if at all), and no clue if the game will have a decent Post-game like Emerald, Black 2/White 2, and Platinum had.

I kinda doubt there will be any honestly, besides maybe some functionality with the preexisting pokemon amiibos. With disney infinity leaving the market, stores everywhere doing massive discounts to clear shelf space and the initial ride of hype/scalping for amiibos dying off the entire genre of “toys to life” has basically been doing nothing but eating shit lately.

I dig the scribble effect on the UI, reminds me of pic related.

And yeah friendly rivals generally suck and this looks likes it’s doing the XY thing of having too damn many of them again as well. Lillie might be interesting I guess. I know they’ll probably never try to go Gary or Silver-level antagonistic again with the rivals but at least having something beyond “we’re best friends forever!” is probably gonna be there with her at least.

That so backwards. I myself usually got bored with the game before I even got to choose my Pokemon but eventually find interest and finish within a week but with X/Y; I couldn’t really find anything enjoyable and finished within about a month.

I guess it just appealed to my nostalgic side with the original pokemon coming back and since I’m a casual I liked the new exp share that lets all your pokemon get 50% exp. I prefer the sprites from older games to the 3D but it wasn’t that bad. There was some silly things like furfrou haircuts and the clothes/accessorizing which was a nice addition. The online was a lot smoother and better overall than the older games.

well the legendaries look cool and the characters look nice
a living pokedex might be fun too

but none of that is substantial enough to add anything new to the game, or fix any of its flaws

what would actually get me hyped for this pokemon would be a normal difficulty option, you know, for those who have grown tired of the standard “handholding baby casual tier” difficulty the games have grown into

  59. scemar
    June 2, 2016 at 10:25 pm

A comprehensive study of Pokemon’s actual demographics would be one of the most insightful looks into the industry ever.

Who actually buys pokemon seems like an ever illusive mystery.

We know it has some appeal with older people for nostalgia.
We also know kids like it.
And there’s obviously a consistent deeply invested fanbase, but for the most part they cannot be accounted for the full sales every release consistently achieves.

    So who exactly buys pokemon?

Anecdotal evidence, I noticed an interesting trend that seems to have happened to people between the first gens and the most recent games, perhaps one that can be called a case of age specific demographic, young kids got a few pokemon games released during their young childhood years, then stopped as they outgrew it, and then got back to buying them again once they got old and nostalgic, and then stop buying again once they grow tired of the same once again.

Maybe it’s the same cycle repeating itself.

    Who knows.

Okay, it doesn’t look bad… But I still am getting the X and Y vibe. Give me some sort of difficulty this time around, something akin to Gen 4. Why gen 4 in particular? Because those game kicked my ass in several parts. Thats one of my favorite things about Gen 4. Even though its not my favorite gen overall, its my favorite in terms of difficulty.

Also, that stupid “pick your hero!” thing. Just let me create a character! Give me a basic character creator so that I can have the character I WANT to play from the start. Stop giving me this “customization, but not really.”

  63. randomdude
    June 5, 2016 at 7:46 am

Ya know… that reminds me that I wished that the pokemon friendship bonuses applied to multiplayer (would be balanced since both players have the same access to bonuses) as a way to deal with suicide teams.

  64. randomdude

  65. randomdude

What would be nice is a little more focus on breeding, like competitive bonuses for actually maintaining your pokemon, like regular feeding, some more mini games for pokemon health and such.
also, pokemon friendship in competitive would be a nice change, since it’d be balanced by everyone being able to use it and still deal with the annoyance of suicide teams. You know the players who make everyone explode….
