Behind Closed Doors Gameplay for Nioh Revealed

Team Ninja has made public the Nioh gameplay that was previously shown behind closed doors at last year’s Tokyo Game Show.

Featured above, you can view the six-minute long gameplay walkthrough for the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive.

The game is a dark samurai-themed experience in which you take control of William, a blonde samurai who is tasked with surviving in feudal Japan, while also destroying any demons he comes along.

Some fans of ours speculate that its protagonist is named after/based on the real-life Williams Adams, a British sailor who not only was the first Briton to sail to Japan, but also one of the few to settle and literally become a samurai (with obvious fiction and liberties taken). This theory also coincides with the time period the game takes place, the Sengoku (or warring states) period of Japan.

Nioh was originally announced for PlayStation 3 as an exclusive, back in 2004. It was stuck in development limbo for over a decade, only to recently be rebranded a PlayStation 4 exclusive, and will launch sometime later this year, worldwide.

I love the aesthetic this has, definitely going to give it a shot.

2:10 It even has the incredibly cheap “surprise” enemies of the Souls titles.
Maybe this will be the Dynasty Borne people have been expecting it to be. WOuldn’t be bad

I like it. Combat looks pretty polished and it appears to be rather challenging. I hope the different stances aren’t just something superficial and actually give you advantages against certain enemies. I also hope it isn’t always so dark. That kind of aesthetic will get old pretty fast.

Isn’t this a Souls game pretty much? Seriously…

I liked the atmosphere when I first saw it, but the Dark Souls approach doesn’t appeal to me.

Looks more like an rpg take on Ninja Gaiden honestly.

“Cheap” not really. It’s realistic. Enemies don’t just stand in the open waiting for you if they can help it. All you have to do is be careful and you don’t get hit by them

    The game looks really good.
I like the whole taking different stances to best attack and break through your enemies stance. I can see this game being really enjoyable on an extreme difficulty.

This is so blatantly “Japanese Mythology-Based Souls” and I’m okay with that.

As long as the gameplay is tight, it offers a fun, unique experience and they don’t go overboard with stupid difficulty because “lol souls is so hard so this is too PREPARE TO DIE” shit. As long as they keep in mind that the difficulty of Souls isn’t the point of the game, I think I’ll enjoy this.

“This enemy sat around with his back exposed and not paying attention to me isn’t suspicious at all!”

Hopefully Koei gives this a halfway decent PC port after the console version releases.

Ditto. It is definitely annoying as a game idea, but it’ll get you to pace yourself much like TLoU’s planned AI which got cut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF0EaH73ee4

So it looks kind of like a samurai themed “Souls” game. Might be cool, though the fact it’s been stuck in development hell is a bit worrying.

So far none of the Souls clones made have managed to pique my interest in the slightest. Then again all of the clones so far were from western developers, but this Japanese clone actually looks really nice.
