The list of yearly fan favorite mods from Mod DB has been published, and sitting atop the most popular mods is one for the 2006 released The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth II.

While the game was originally released for Xbox 360 and PC, it saw only one expansion in the form of The Rise of the Witch-king, which features a new faction known as Angmar. I quite enjoyed the game, despite the feeling that its AI was quite lackluster.

The aforementioned mod, the Edain Mod, is quite ambitious – so much so that it might be the closest thing to a Battle for Middle-earth III we’ll ever get. Here’s a brief synopsis of what the mod includes so far:

“The Edain Mod aims to take you deeper into Middle-Earth than ever before and create a game worthy of Tolkien’s books and Peter Jackson’s movies. In our quest for lore accuracy, visual quality and deeper gameplay, we overhauled every aspect of the original game to craft a new, immersive Lord of the Rings experience. Discover the new factions of Lothlorien and Rohan, field new units and heroes for each of the existing factions, enjoy a visual style closer to the movies and unleash the power of the One Ring with individual Ring heroes for every factions. Light or Shadow, Defender or Conqueror… the choice is yours.”

Here’s the entire list of winners, and the games they mod:

  1. Edain Mod (The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth II)
  2. Rise of the Reds (Command & Conquer: Generals: Zero Hour)
  3. Mental Omega (Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2: Yuri’s Revenge)
