Xanadu Next, Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus, and Little King’s Story Coming to PC

new xseed pc games 10-16-15-1

We’ve learned that XSEED Games are bringing a whole host of games to PC via Steam.

The publisher is bringing Xanadu Next, Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus, and Little King’s Story to PC via Steam in western territories sometime next year.

Xanadu Next was released in Japan for PC back in 2005, while Little King’s Story was released for the Wii back in 2009 (Editor’s Note: This is not the Konami-developed PS Vita game).

Back at this year’s E3, I had a chance to speak to Senran Kagura creator Kenichiro Takaki, who said he thinks about bringing the series to PC “daily.” I guess he finally gets his wish! Are you guys excited to see these games debut on PC?

In the case of Xanadu Next, that’s by Falcom which has been a long time (and mainly) PC developer. Most of their games haven’t been ported or localized to anything else, but it’s good they’re embracing PC and I assume Steam.

  33. blackice85
    October 15, 2015 at 4:01 pm

That and even if sales were good for a Vita title, which I assume they were since we’re getting more Senran Kagura, Vita still has a tiny install base compared to PC. PC is a logical step for growth.

The only thing that bothers me about this are the words “via Steam”.

I am strongly averse to Steam–I do not trust most digital distribution models, especially Steam’s; I am just as averse to DRM and the idea that they can pull the plug on the games that I pay for as they see fit, and I am also likewise averse to the idea of my games being bound to an account and the restrictions that such binding entails.

Hopefully, there will be Steam-free alternative sources–that Marvelous and Takaki will remember that there was a time when “PC” meant “Personal Computer”, not “Steam”, and that there are those that do not accept the latter as its new definition.

Steam has pretty much become synonymous with PC gaming. And if I may be so bold, it has played a large role in increasing the popularity of PC gaming.

Its how things are right now. You want a game on PC, the first method of distribution at the top of every publishers list is Steam. It has the biggest user base by a rather large margin.

I also hope they come to other services as well though. If a game gets released on GoG, I’ll happily buy that version over the Steam version.

Thing is, if you do not have the files on your HDD and need another one, you will still need to use GOGs servers.

Its a better alternative, but still pretty shit compared to retail

  64. deadeye
    October 15, 2015 at 8:54 pm

This is why when you download a game from GoG, you’re downloading an installer that has no DRM on it whatsoever. It’s so you can make as many back ups of it as you want. That is way better than retail.

Retail can only keep whats new, relevant, and sells well. And with old games you have to go through second hand sources and pay many times what the game is actually worse. It’s also not like there are infinite copies of the game and they are indestructible. If they were, I would say retail is objectively better.

Go look up some of the asking prices for Panzer Dragoon Saga and tell me digital distribution doesn’t have benefits.

XSEED (or MarvelousUSA as they’re now known) is MarvelousAQL’s in-house localization company. They can still act independently handling other companies’ games, but for Marvelous they’re the ones who handle western releases now.

That said, XSEED deserves just as much credit either way. They’re a talented studio, and as far as any of us know they had a hand in the decision. It wouldn’t be the first time, these companies pay close attention to their fans’ concerns and demands.

  84. Gigaknight
    October 16, 2015 at 9:25 am

I have heard of GoG–their model doesn’t bother me at all. Well, at least what I remember of it. I’d have no trouble doing business with them.

It’s the likes of Steam that I can not and will not tolerate.

That being said, I can’t disagree with anything you’ve said. In the minds of the vast majority (which is made up either of people who aren’t familiar with a time before rampant anti-consumer DRM or those who are too lazy-/consumer-minded to make the distinction or care about it), Steam HAS become so synonymous–wrongly so, in my opinion. I’m also almost certain that it is at least significantly responsible for PC gaming’s popularity rise Now, because Steam is so very popular, releasing through that platform first is the logical business choice, sure.

The problem is that, now, these devs/publishers do this not as a product of business planning, but as a lazy, knee-jerk reaction to a trend–thus making it the ONLY business choice made, with regard to the PC platform. The first name out of their mouths when announcing PC platform availability isn’t “PC”, or even “PC via Steam”–it’s “Steam”. Rarely–if ever–do I hear that they’ll release to the likes of GoG in their announcements (or in articles that detail such availability). It’s just “Steam”. I think it’s *awful*, but it’s not a decision that will harm their bottom line significantly: it just leaves out those who see the problems with Steam and platforms like it, and there are far more than enough Steam fans to make that loss a drop in the proverbial bucket.

I beg a thousand pardons if I am wrong in my assessment, as certain personal matters have taken my eyes off the market at times, but that’s what I’ve seen for as long as I’ve been able to watch it.

  85. Gigaknight
    October 16, 2015 at 9:40 am

    I can only hope so.

Deadeye is right–digital distribution DOES have its benefits, and I’ve long used certain forms of it. Everyone has.

It’s just that Steam, as a digital distribution platform, sucks–but it’s still vastly popular. Better alternatives like GoG are eclipsed by it.

  97. Psichaos
    October 17, 2015 at 12:53 pm

Vita has the most niche games, sure, but it’s nice that more japanese developers are starting to embrace PC gaming, as the PC platform provides a lot more freedom to both developers and consumers. Consumers can mod a PC game to their liking, like how the Neptunia community is redoing the past couple games questionable localization script, and the developers and localization crews themselves don’t have to fear the AO rating on PC (or rather, that excuse is made bunk) as PC doesn’t prevent those games from being played and Steam doesn’t prevent developers from releasing uncensor patches on their own site.

No, the points you raised are valid – but to the Japanese companies, Steam pretty important since they viewed as a platform/console to them (wrongly so but hey!) and that’s the main “pull” (we got 1.000.000+ potential buyers in steam! Release the game!!!)

GoG is pretty awesome. Their lack of DRM is the most notable (hope it stays that way). My principle? support the niche titles by purchasing them (in summer disc.) via steam – unless they offered it in GoG! in that case, GoG first!

It almost certainly IS a platform to more than just the companies. I really hate such lazily simplistic thinking–the same manner of thinking that’s so widespread. It’s because it’s so widespread among people that the companies must think accordingly, themselves (which is why, in turn, you can’t really fault them..for the most part: for example, they could offer it on GoG).

Supporting such niche titles wouldn’t be an issue at all, don’t get me wrong. It’s just that downloading DRM-laden programs is unacceptable to me; as long as Steam engages in that business practice, they’ll not see my business.

    That’s the conundrum.

Definitely buying Xanadu but the others aren’t really my type. Good to see more Japanese games coming to PC regardless of if they’re ones I want though, can only bode well

Getting my first gaming PC soon so hopefully this kind of thing will continue (especially with older games like Xanadu coming West)

Yes, but Japanese developers have a particularly bad reputation with it. Every time a Japanese PC port is announced the first thought is how broken will it be. Locked to 30 FPS, locked to a specific resolution, missing options menu, no mouse controls, missing features, terrible performance, etc are all unfortunately common in many Japanese PC ports.

I always go GoG first. I have even gone GoG 2nd when it was released later, just to have a nice, clean DRM free copy of a game. When it comes to double-dipping like that, I’ll wait for a sale, sure, but I do prefer it.

XSEED has 5 games on GoG right now, so it’s not completely out of the bounds of possibility, though I imagine that if they do release these games on that platform, it will be well after their first pass at the PC market via Steam.

For some companies, that decision may be that after they have “earned out” on the largest platform, they are willing to take the “risk” of a DRM-free version. Then again, while GoG has a number of publishers that release there, they don’t release all their games, and even some of the older ones remain bound to Steam.

Exactly. I don’t have a PC made in the last decade XD, so this news isn’t really relevant for me, but it’s always good to see niche games like these get some more exposure.

Yeah, Falcom has primarily developed games for computers (they started off developing for the PC-88), so the handful of recent PSP & Vita exclusives have been a bit of an anomaly for them. Personally, I would love it if more of Falcom’s back-catalog would get ported to consoles or handhelds (Ys Origin port, pretty plz).

I’d love if they did that. Admittedly I’m not familiar with many of them, but I haven’t played a bad Falcom game yet, and XSEED has done a fine job localizing them IMO.

It’s happening! So happy to see the PC getting more and more Japanese games. I feel like anything is possible at this point.

That’s true but steam won’t be good forever. All good things must come to an end.

Overall underwhelming character to play as unless you’re a god with movement tech and the fact that she ruins any mood with that personality of hers… cute as fuck, tho. Especially her puppy act.

That’s pretty up in the air at the moment. I started the build shortly after posting that comment by buying a new PSU, case and GPU (a GTX 970) but then I stopped getting shifts at my job because they hire far too many people and now I haven’t been able to afford to finish the thing. Was planning to get an i5 4690 and 8GB DDR3

Did it always have boob ninjas and Neps? No? Then it wasn’t viable.
