Twitch Dumping Flash And Beginning Transition To HTML5

Popular game streaming website Twitch is going through another change, this time one that doesn’t involve adding copyright protection schemes or banning users for broadcasting certain game content. The news this time concerns the service switching from Flash video to HTML5, a welcomed change considering the security problems present in Flash.

The transition will be rolleout slowly, with the video controls being the first thing to move to HTML5 and the videos themselves to make the switch-over sometime thereafter. The official Twitch blog has the details:

Today’s redesign moves half of the video player – specifically the controls – from Flash to HTML5 and Javascript. The video itself is still in Flash underneath the controls. However, this is an important step to releasing the much-anticipated full HTML5 player. You’ll begin to see the new player on channel pages first. As previously mentioned, this is a gradual roll out. If you are not part of our initial pool of users, please be patient as we release the redesigned player at a steady pace.

Though Twitch is the industry leader in streaming services, competitors have already started making the leap to HTML. One such alternative site, Hitbox, was launched using HTML5 for their chat functions.
