Rumor: Koji Igarashi’s Castlevania Spiritual Successor to Be Revealed Soon

In September of last year, we reported on a very curious piece of viral marketing that was clearly pointing towards some kind of crowd-funded, Castlevania-inspired project by the ex-Konami mastermind, Koji Igarashi.

Following the teaser, Igarashi-san reportedly put his dream game on hold, thus making all the bits of viral marketing, one of which being a throwback to Electronic Gaming Monthly’s regular nom de plume Quarterman column (this one being Quarterwomann), go silent. Now, the Quarterwomann Twitter account has become active yet again, posting the following Tweets:

“Traced this leaker for months only to have my account TOS’d when I got too close. Where do the runes fit in?,” wrote the mysterious account. “Going to scour Usenet and WWW forums for more info before we go to press. ‘Net-savvy fans always know where the bodies are buried…” The above Tweets were posted with the following image:

The password in the above image has the same number of characters as Igarashi’s name, as well as a message on the right that says “rune translation.” In the original viral teaser, the pentagram flyer had runes inside it, which fans deciphered into “What a wonderful night to have a KS,” or Kickstarter.

The latest tease comes in two parts, the first of which appearing on the Castlevania Dungeon forums, under a brand new user, Igavania. The second teaser (also posted by Igavania) was posted over on the Chapel of Resonance forum, both of which are titled “The first sign rises with the full moon” and a post saying “Soon, I will return.” Tomorrow (or May 5th depending on your time zone) is a full moon. The avatar of each user is a pixelated version of Dracula, with Igarashi’s face on it.

The Quarterwomann and Igavania accounts both use the same email account.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that several ex-EGM folks now work at 8-4, a Japanese localization company that are close to Igarashi-san. We’ve reached out to folks we know who may be able to clarify this.

We’ll keep you guys posted.

Let the 10’s be known as the decade of spiritual successors.

I hope this is true. I need something to heal my heart after Konami broke it.

Sorry Igarashi, I’m not giving a fraction of a cent to any kickstarter involving 8-4.

What’s wrong with 8-4? I never heard of them aside from their poor localization with Azure Striker Gunvolt.

Let’s start with the last kickstarter they worked on shall we? They put some hack who didn’t meet the requirements into the community manager position who promptly screwed EVERYTHING up

They also support censorship (the senior staff gave us THIS wonderful IGDA presentation), and their translations are terrible lately (Bravely Default has so much inconsistency in tone. Generic “we have no reason to be here” conversations within the party have a formal tone, but the same characters talk very casually to the local rulers)

Actually Dina was all Comcept, not 8-4 (even though they still defended her dumb ass). Everything else about 8-4 still applies.

Let’s not forget how they rewrote a heap of shit in FE:A and did an awful job of conveying the characters’ personalities.

I heard Tales of Heart R’s translation was a mess, but didn’t know 8-4 did it.

Tales of Heart had some really stupid names (“Meteorite”) and I wouldn’t have been too hung up on them getting changed, but 8-4 managed to make them even stupider (“Meteor”. It took my five minutes to think of “Meteoron”, the ancient greek word Meteor comes from, which looks like a family name and keeps the theme) and they don’t have the excuse of not speaking English and thinking names like that seem cool.

And here I finally forgot about the Gunvolt thing.

Back to being mad at that.

The thing that really hammered it home with Hearts R tho was it was JP audio only, so what the characters said did not match the text, i was really confused at the start untill i worked out what was going on.

To be fair, that’s the case with a lot more localizations than you’d think. You just don’t hear about it as much because they’re more niche or have dubs that match the audio, essentially hiding how much was really changed.

I heard that it isn’t just the text no longer matching the voice work (which still looks super unprofessional), but the text visually does not match the expressions and animations

Where possible i play games with JP audio, i can understand a good bit of spoken JP but can’t read much kana unfortunately. I usually use the english text as a guideline rather than the be all end all.

Hey guys – I wanted to point out that as this is a rumor, it’s all speculation for now.

The 8-4 thing is just myself and some other GAF users assuming they’re the ones running the Quarterwomann Twitter, as the connection there would be their using it again, just like they used the name in their EGM days.

We’ll know for sure tomorrow whether this is real or not…. so try not to be too negative :)

To be fair, Drakengard 3, as a whole, was not the best of games to begin with.

Brandon Mate, I love you, but you are way too optimistic.

P.S. then again, so am I.
