Todd McFarlane Says “Yes” to Having Spawn in Mortal Kombat X

It seems like Spawn could be making a fighting game return in Mortal Kombat X, if creator Todd McFarlane’s recent interview is anything to go by.

In an interview with GamerFitnation, when asked if fans could expect Spawn in Mortal Kombat X, McFarlane said “yes”. However, his enthusiasm might be for nothing—Netherrealm Studios have the rights to use Spawn in their fighting games, but the character’s inclusion only happens if they opt to make use of those rights. McFarlane did say that Netherrealm has a “window of time”, which presumably means the length of their license of the character.

It’s worth noting that Spawn had also been rumored to be included in Netherrealm’s previous game, Injustice: Gods Among Us, but ultimately didn’t make the cut. The last game that included a version of Spawn was Soul Calibur II HD Online in 2013, while the original 2003 game had Spawn as a playable character only on Xbox.

This is by no means a confirmation, but it’s certainly interesting McFarlane did say that Netherrealm has a “window of time,” which presumably means the length of their license of the character—does it make you wonder how many licensing deals (like this) are inked, only to never be used?
