Yesterday marked the launch of patch 2.4 for Final Fantasy XIV, and while a patch normally isn’t news, the fact that this patch added an in-game cash shop is.

Paying money for digital enhancements in an online game has always been a touchy subject, which may be why the game’s producer, Naoki Yoshida, stressed that none of these items will provide gameplay advantages. As pure vanity enhancements, they are merely there for people who want to customize their avatars.

The reborn MMO is trying to stay profitable during a time when F2P games are gaining momentum. Square are looking to supplement their income, and are taking their cue from successes like Path of Exile‘s cash shop.
