Shuhei Yoshida: Playstation Vita is Getting Fewer First Party Games

Last week we talked about how Sony’s Andrew House was positioning the Playstation Vita as an “extender of the Playstation 4,” and how that was a bad thing. Most Playstation Vita owners that commented were in agreement with my statement, and yet things may be getting a bit worse for Vita fans.

It seems like the rabbit hole is a bit deeper than we thought, if Sony worldwide studios boss Shuhei Yoshida’s recent interview with Polygon is anything to go by. The interview was mostly focused on Sony’s embrace of indies, and it’s shepherding of both indies and third parties as of late.

However, the interview took a bit of a turn when Polygon’s Brian Crecente asked if the Vita would be getting fewer first party games, to which Shu responded with:

“I would say, yes, that’s correct.”

I’m going to assume that his PR handlers urged the interview to move forward, as that line of conversation was quickly dropped, and the interview moved onto how third parties are bringing their games to the platform.

But what about Sony’s first and second party studios? Have they all really moved on to the Playstation 4? I think Playstation Vita owners deserve an answer.

Despite seeing some truly awesome looking exclusive games coming to the platform, Sony’s decision to localize titles like Freedom Wars, Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines, and Soul Sacrifice Delta came a ways off the games’ original reveals.

Sony seems like they’re in between a rock and a hard place in the sense of which platform they should dedicate more resources and development teams to – the PS4 or the Vita? Nintendo has been in a similar predicament, where some people say the Wii U’s biggest rival is … the Nintendo 3DS.

Lastly, one of the most memorable and beloved games in recent memory (for me at least) – Gravity Rush, is getting a sequel, and yet we’ve heard practically nothing since its original teaser trailer was revealed. Has that game been lost into oblivion, or worse yet, is it being re-purposed into a console game?
