The Battle System and Fusion Between Party Members are Detailed for Tales of Zestiria

Bandai Namco has revealed quite a bevy of details for Tales of Zestiria, their upcoming mothership title within the Tales franchise.

First up is the brand new feature within the Fusionic Chain Linear Motion Battle System that allows the fusion between the protagonist Slay and a member of the Family of Heaven.

The new fusing technique is apparently called “Kamui,” and it translates roughly into something like “Divine Convert,” but in the game it simply allows the fusion of a human and a member of the Family of Heaven. You can see the recording from the Tales of Festival where producer Hideo Baba briefly goes over how everything works.

While we’re told that any human can fuse with a member of the Family of Heaven, so far we’ve only seen Slay do it. An example was shown in the form of Slay and Laila fusing together, creating a temporary being able to unleash powerful fire attacks.

Presumably, if Slay fuses with other members from the Family of Heaven, he’ll not only look different but unleash other elemental abilities. So far, we haven’t heard of any limitations for this ability, but we’re sure they’ll have some sort of cool down set before the game ships.

You can also find some new details for the various aspects of battle within Tales of Zestiria’s Fusionic Chain Linear Motion Battle System (yup that’s the official name now) below:

Spirit Chain Gauge

Special techniques and spells that are used in Tales of Zestiria deplete your Spirit Chain Points, which are automatically deducted from your Spirit Chain Gauge every time they’re performed. Your gauge caps out at 100 points, and in battle (feature above) it appears as the blue bar in the lower portion of the screen, beneath your health bar.

Combos in Tales of Zesitira are typically a maximum of four attacks, but if you have a portion of your Spirit Chain Gauge left, you can continue your combo into a completely new one. You can sit around and wait for your gauge to replenish, but if you successfully dodge or defend from enemies, it’ll almost instantaneously fill back up, allowing you to blast through combos and your foes.

Blast Gauge

The Blast Gauge is yet another gauge that your party members will have in Tales of Zestiria. This gauge is filled up incrementally by successfully evading and blocking enemy attacks. Featured above and below, it’s the small, light blue number with the circle around it.

When you spend points from your Blast Gauge, you can perform special abilities like replenishing your Spirit Chain Gauge and attacking even more, although further abilities weren’t detailed. You can use the Blast Gauge in single bursts, but if you learn to use it properly and master it, you can take your battling to an entirely different level.

Around Step

Around Steps are a dodging technique that let you unleash a Reflexive Evasion when you time it properly, enabling to you get out of harms way but also leave your enemies wide open for a counterattack.

This will also replenish your Spirit Chain Gauge as mentioned before, but the key benefit to using this technique is to constantly be on your toes and evade enemy attacks – whether they be horizontal or vertical. Master this technique and you’ll be dicing up your foes in no time!

Lailah’s Combat Style

Lailah’s combat style was also detailed – she primarily uses the element of fire, setting forth special pieces of paper that act as a conduit to unleash a fiery inferno. She’s also very adept at restricting the movements and attacks of enemies, and she can also deal some major damage if you know how to properly execute her combos.

Dezel’s Combat Style

Dezel’s combat style was also detailed – he uses the element of wind, a power he unleashes with his decorative pendulums, a tool that allows him to unleash gale forces just like Laila’s paper strips. He can twist and fling his pendulums around like whips, allowing him to cover really massive areas of the battlefield. Due to his preferred element and his attacking style, Dezel is perfect for keeping large groups of enemies at bay, alone or with allies.

Tales of Zestiria is currently in development for the PlayStation 3.
