The creator of Papers, Please, Lucas Pope, has revealed his next game – and it’s quite the departure from his previous customs/passport simulator.

The game is titled Return of the Obra Dinn, a 3D first person mystery game that is all about the 1808 merchant vessel of the same name. The ship was lost at sea, only to turn up six years later at the Cape of Good Hope, with no crew and damaged sails. The protagonist of the game is an insurance adjuster for the East India Company’s London Office, as he searches for the captain’s logbook.

Return of Obra Dinn is a game designed with 1-bit rendering in mind, as he is purely going for his own “nostalgia-softened spot.” His first computer was a Mac Plus, so naturally he wants to recapture the art style from that time, thus he is sticking to his guns in creating a black and white, ultra pixelated style. He warns that it may end up looking terrible on video or image captures, but it will look great in motion.

Pope explained the lack of unique gameplay, where he instead opted for a more unique visual style:

“There’ll be less creativity with the gameplay and instead I want to experiment with the rendering, story, and a few technical features.”

A release date and development platform were not confirmed for Return of the Obra Dinn, but in the meantime, you can read more about it here.

We’ll keep you guys posted.
