When it was revealed a couple weeks ago that Dark Souls 2 was being advertised alongside doctored screenshots, many graphics hungry hardcore gamers were understandably upset. Though it didn’t affect sales, it did create a lot of negative press for a game that didn’t need it.

Now things have gotten worse, since observant gamers have noted that the screenshots on Steam’s Dark Souls 2 page that pointed to the older (doctored) version have now been removed.

It’s often hard for others to understand the importance the high-end PC crowd (Of which I am one) put on visuals, but when a company blatantly fakes the graphical fidelity of a game in its advertising…it’s understandable that they’d be upset.

Still, being on the PC means it will be open to modding, and it’s not farfetched to expect someone to improve the visuals themselves. DSfix was known for making the PC version of the first game such a hit, thanks in large part to the fan-made patch fixing much of what was never done by the RPG’s own programmers.

Though it won’t likely harm sales (Dark Souls 2 is still one of the most pre-purchased games on Steam), it does make you wonder why From Software would say the PC version was the lead platform if it is so on-par with the console ports.
