Sony: “The Chinese Market is Promising, We’ll Explore the Possibilities”

Well, that didn’t take long. Despite China only recently lifting its fourteen year long ban on foreign video game consoles, Sony already has their eyes set on the Peoples’ Republic, or so it seems.

A spokesperson from Sony had this to say in an interview with Reuters Japan regarding the company’s stance towards the newly opened opportunities that lie in China:


“The Chinese market is promising, we’ll explore the possibilities.”

Here’s where things get interesting, a spokesperson from Nintendo said the company has “no plans” to expand into China at this time, despite the related news that their stocks had risen 7.5% percent after the news of China’s decision had reached the public.

Microsoft did not disclose any plans for the Chinese market either, but the Chief Executive Office of the Greater China Region (that’s a mouthful) Ralph Haupter did mention an existing partnership with Chinese media company BesTV to grow “a new development ecosystem in China.” Microsoft invested $237 million dollars into the company last year.

Despite the massive untapped potential the Chinese market has, loose copyrighting and trademark enforcement and rampant piracy could prove too great an adversary for any of the big three manufacturers.
