Online Gaming Services Under Attack

As if the networks we play (and purchase) our games on didn’t have enough connectivity issues to deal with this holiday season, it appears that certain individuals are creating havoc with nearly every service they can ping flood.

Xbox Live, PSN, Origin, Battle Net, Steam and even the League of Legends servers have all been experiencing outages brought on by denial of service attacks caused by use of an automated attack tool.

The culprits are as varied as the services they have chosen to attack, since several groups are all scrambling to take credit and they all seem to have different reasons for doing it as well. Some say it is due to the recent controversy involving a popular game streamer, while others say it is just a case of “They do it because they can”.

Either way, this has caused a lot of grief for both gamers and the companies involved. Though no personal info seems to have been taken, these antics do serve to highlight the relative insecurity of the networks we all depend on.
