Nintendo has brought the eShop back online across both the Wii U and 3DS platforms. Due to insane network traffic over the past few days over the holiday, Nintendo’s network, including the eShop, were put almost to a complete halt.
The network strain was so bad it provoked Nintendo to remove the Pokemon Bank and Poke Transporter services from the 3DS eShop entirely. This in turn caused the Western release of both services to be delayed.
Nintendo also posted a message regarding the current status of the network:
We do not anticipate any further outages, but will continue to closely monitor the situation.

They also issued an apology for all those inconvenienced during the outaged:
We sincerely apologize for this week's inconsistencies and thank you again for your patience and support.

Naturally, there could be yet another spike in user demand, putting further strain on the eShop or the Nintendo Network.
Microsoft and Sony were both having network issues of their own, but thankfully all seems to be well across both platforms now.
