The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Has an “Expansion” Pass

Nintendo has announced an “Expansion Pass” for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Setting you back $19.99, the Expansion Pass functions like a season pass, and gets you access to two batches of downloadable content that are coming out this summer and holiday, respectively.

This is the first time Nintendo is offering downloadable expansions for a main Legend of Zelda game, and here’s the information we have thus far:

  • Content Pack #1 (Summer 2017) – Adds a “Cave of Trials” challenge, a new hard mode, and a new feature for the in-game map.
  • Content Pack #2 (Holiday 2017) – Adds new challenges that will let players enjoy a new dungeon and new original story.

The content packs are naturally coming to both the Nintendo Switch and Wii U versions of the game, and more interestingly – they can’t be purchased separately, meaning you have to buy the pass to get either of them. It’s also not clear if the game’s special or limited edition include this DLC.

As soon as you pre-purchase or buy the Expansion Pass at launch, three new treasure chests appear in the game’s “Great Plateau” region. One of the chests includes a shirt with a Switch logo that Link can wear, which is apparently exclusive to this DLC. The other two will offer “useful items.”

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is launching worldwide for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U on March 3rd.
