Mafia III Developer Hangar 13 Faces Layoffs

2K has confirmed Hangar 13, the studio recently known for developing Mafia III, has been hit with layoffs.

The publisher has confirmed that “staff reductions” have been made to ensure that “the studio’s resources are properly aligned with its long-term development plans.” While a number isn’t known, Kotaku is reporting that it was a large number of people.

“These reductions will not influence 2K’s ability to create and deliver its products that are currently in development. We never take these matters lightly, and are working with the affected employees to support them and explore potential opportunities throughout our organization,” 2K said.

Reportedly, the studio was prototyping a new game for the past year – with one idea focusing on a third-person action game that had “fight to music” gameplay, only to be later axed.

Despite Mafia III shipping over five million copies and becoming the fastest-selling game in 2K history, it seems like the publisher wasn’t satisfied with their investment in the AAA title.

Mafia III is currently available for Windows PC (via Steam), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
