Live-Action Sleeping Dogs Movie Officially in Production and Filming

We previously reported on an official, live-action movie based on Sleeping Dogs being produced – with Hong Kong legend Donnie Yen starring. Now, the owner of some furious fists has officially confirmed the film has entered production and filming.

The news comes via the actors Instagram, where he confirmed the movie’s production is “in motion,” while further teasing that “sometimes great things take a bit of time. You guys ready for this?”

Production is being headed by Neal Moritz (Fast and Furious), with Yen starring as undercover cop Wei Shen, who’s set on a mission to take down the infamous Triads. As the movie is based on the original game, it’s expected to take place in Hong Kong (and other regions), complete with fight scenes, racing, shooting, and more.

Donnie Yen is a great pick for Wei Shen.
Also, how sad it is,we’re getting a movie but there’s no chance for a sequel.

  • CommanderZx2

Sleeping Dogs is based on movies therefore it should be fairly easy to make a movie based on the game, unless they some how manage to screw it up.

  • goodbyejojo

you know what i found funny about this, is that he already did this type of movie back in 2013 called Special ID, exact same premise, check it out.

  • OtakuBrony230

So happy it’s officially happening. Ever since I’ve finished the game a year ago and seen the short film on YouTube, I’ve hoped it would happen someday.

Sleeping Dogs is one of the best games in its genre I’ve played in years and found it much better then GTA 5.
Really hope we get a part 2 one day.

  • Uncle Ocelot

So weird that we’re getting a movie adaptation of a dead franchise, but hopefully it does well enough to convince Square to give it another shot.

  • Kakaku

Now that the dev company closed down any possible sequel would be a cheap imitation.

  • Kakaku

The previous dev team shut down. Even if it does well I don’t think a sequel is possible.

  • Kakaku

The dev company shutdown. United Front Games is no more.

Now that I think about it Square Enix London made up about half the team so maybe it wouldn’t be impossible if they just scooped up some of the big talent.

  • CyborgNinja

Never played Sleeping Dogs but the little I saw of it seemed interesting. Donnie Yen is a great martial artist.

  • Fear Me I Am Free

Oh Oh, is he gonna go through 5 different women and have them go nowhere?

  • s_fnx

I really don’t get it. With the money they’re spending on this movie they could’ve made Sleeping Dogs 2 but we’re talking Square Enix after all…

  • Travis Touchdown

Why don’t you fund a Switch exclusive sequel, Square?

  • SevTheBear

liked the game. Had plenty of fun with it and hey, I enjoy a GOOD action flick

  • Uncle Ocelot

I know. That doesn’t exactly rule out a sequel though, there are plenty of franchises that changed studios over the years.

  • Sigurd Chalphy

Battlefront 3 looked good despite Free Radical taking over from Pandemic. Don’t rule it out entirely.

  • Travis Touchdown

    Fuck you, that was awesome.

  • Random Dude

Heck, the premise of Sleeping Dogs itself has been done to death in China crimefight movies.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

    “despite”
Shit should’ve stayed dead; maybe then I’d still have Free Radical and you wouldn’t have to suffer EA.

  • sanic

    How about a movie game…

  • Uncle Ocelot

Man, you just had to remind me…

  • Ace

This was a super fun game, but I never imagined it was super popular enough to get its own movie.
