Worldwide PS4 Shipments Top 76.5 Million, Nearly Outselling the PS3

Sony has announced total worldwide shipments for PlayStation 4 have topped 76.5 million units.

The news was confirmed in the company’s latest financial results, which ended on December 31st of last year. A total of nine million PlayStation 4 consoles were shipped during the three months leading up to the end of last year, a total down 700,000 from last year’s 9.7 million units in the same time frame.

It’s worth mentioning this new milestone is bringing the PlayStation 4 closer to outselling its predecessor, the Playstation 3. The previous generation console has sold roughly 80 million units worldwide – it’s only a matter of time when the PlayStation 4 overtakes it. Sony’s crown jewel of sales, the PlayStation 2, is the greatest-selling gaming console of all time at over 150 million units.

Lastly, Sony’s projected 19 million shipped units for this fiscal year is still in place.

It will likely outsell the PS3 in its lifecycle, but nothing is getting close to the PS2 numbers ever again.

Never was so much bought by so many to play so few games

  • Mr0303

About 1700 games if Wikipedia is to be trusted.

It’s actually been a great machine to play niche Japanese games now that it’s gotten a bunch of ports from Vita games. I played Danganronpa 1-2, Another Episode, Tokyo Xanadu, and Digimon Cyber Slueth on it. The games look way better.

The PS brand has always been the brand that sells Japanese imports. The “few games” argument falls flat for JRPG fans and people who play niche titles. I honestly don’t know how the “no games” meme hasn’t hit the X1 tbh. And I say this as a guy with a Switch, PC, and PS4.

  • Mr0303

    Have you played Hacker’s Memory?

  • Exien

Well it’s 1,5 consoles so we need the sale numbers of the PS4 and the Pro

All but Cyber Sleuth is on the PC though.

It’s not really “few games” so much as “few noteworthy exclusives that this poster cares about”.

I think Sony needs to curb their expectations for the future. Judging from November 2017 sales, people are only willing to purchase PS4 when it has huge discounts (discounts to where Sony probably isn’t making huge profits per unit sold). December came and the discounts ended, then Switch trounced Xbone and PS4 – and they finished the month in that order.

If Sony thinks they can hang on for 2+ more years until PS5 then they’re going to have a rough life of lubeless Switch rapings. But if they release before then? “Jesus Christ, I just bought a PS4 Pro, now there’s more hardware?”

They better take care not to get complacent like they did after PS2. They need some big-selling exclusives that aren’t Western SJW moviegames.

  • Feniks

Don’t bother. Literally every 3rd party game in the last 3 years was released on the PS4.

But facts versus memes? Memes win.

And Japanese games don’t count to these people. Ever.

Crying “but its on pc” isn’t a solution to the problem of ownership on the pc

And people who play primarily consoles don’t give a shit about PC.

Exactly what games did you want on PS4? Otherwise shut the fuck up.

Keep the train going I just bought a 2nd PS4. PS3 was a great console but many things hindered extra millions of sales. PS4 has no such hindrance.

Because X1 is so irrelevant vs PS4 that nobody even sees it as bringing up anymore.

    The PS4 will outsell PS2

I have no idea what you’re talking about.

That honestly makes the Nintendo people shitting on the PS4 even funnier to me. And again, I own everything except the X1.

I was just making the easy joke, calm down you gigantic autist.
