Gorgeous Pixelated Metroidvania Game “Iconoclasts” Launches on January 23, 2018 for PC, PS4, and PS Vita

Indie Swedish developer Joakim “Konjak” Sandberg is finally launching his gorgeous metroidvania game, Iconoclasts.

The pixelated metroidvania adventure will launch on January 23rd of next year across PC (via Steam), PS Vita, and PlayStation 4. Featured above, a new trailer was released alongside the launch date announcement.

Here’s a rundown on the game:

Robin just wants to be a mechanic and help people, but without a license she’s a sinner in Mother’s eyes. Ever since picking up her wrench, the world has been going nuts and she’s wanted to bolt it back together. Now Penance is raining down on everyone she loves and One Concern agents are after her.

But something big is going on – bigger than droughts of Ivory fuel and personal conflicts – and Robin’s in the thick of it.

Iconoclasts is the masterwork of indie developer Joakim Sandberg, seven long years in the making. Iconoclasts delivers awesome action, hilarious hijinks and an emotional rollercoaster of deeply personal storytelling.

Key Features:

  • 10 nut-twisting hours of Metroidvania-style platform adventure.
  • 10 densely detailed locations filled with fine-tuned action and puzzles.
  • 20+ gear-grinding, screen-filling boss battles stand in your way.
  • 3 game-changing difficulty settings supported by a unique skill system.
  • A heart-wrenching epic — can one mechanic fix the whole world?.

  • NukeA6

Looks like Metroid + Kim Possible.

  • Heidegger

    Hi, just wanted to fix:

Developer is Joakim “Konjak” Sandberg – Bifrost is the Publisher.

  • Lea Pastillaroja

i’ve had my eye on this one for a while now, i was afraid it’ll never come out
glad to see i was wrong

  • Mr0303

It gives away some good Metroidvania vibes, but I’ve become cautious with indie pixel platformers.

  • CrusaderEsper

No Switch release… I thought all the indies were coming out on Switch lately.

  • lucben999

You should try Valdis Story: Abyssal City and Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight. Both are on Steam and they are some of my favorites in the genre.

  • Hot damn this looks sweet, and those character animation intros!

I’ve been looking at this game on and off since it was first announced, so glad to see it’s actually going to release. The music in the trailer too is awesome. I’m pretty stoked for this.

  • Ah – thanks!

  • PenguinPlayer

It’s actually coming out? Holy shit, can’t wait.

  • Lionhart16

    Holy shit, it’s still real!?

Last time I heard of this game was almost three years ago, and then there was absolute silence on it ever since.

    Glad to see it alive!

  • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

FINALLY! We were waiting for this game for a decade.

With the creator having a great experience with enjoyable, well-made retro-style games like Noitu Love Devolution, I have good faith for this one.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

proof that pixel art doesn’t have to suck

  • Person Man

    >worried about the game that has a public demo that’s better than most indie platformers.
    >worried about a game made by the same man who made the amazing Noitu Love 2 and Legend of Princess.

What “indie pixel platformer” did you play that made you so cautious.

  • Mr0303

    >using lame image board writing style.

I haven’t played any of his previous games and I haven’t played the demo. It’s just the general pixilated look that is typical for hipster trash games.

  • Person Man

Such as? Most games don’t look this good.

  • Mr0303

Such as Read Only Memories 2064, Braid and Towerfall Ascention. This game looking slightly better is not really something that removes my suspicions.

  • Person Man

Braid isn’t pixel shit. Although it is pretentious.
Towerfall Ascension is harmless as a game itself. The devs are the ones who were bad.
    2064 qualifies on all accounts.

Either way, it’s just an art-style and it doesn’t look anything like “hipster trash” games nor does it play like one.

  • CRES

The sprite work looks great, but why do I get a sense that the character art was taken straight from Tumblr?

  • orbo

Yeah, I didn’t want to go
    >vita
But seriously, why game makers are still putting stuff on this dead system and NOT on the switch baffles me.
This would fit perfectly on the switch.

But who knows, maybe it’ll come to the switch later.

  • Mr0303

So in summary the games I mentioned are made by hipsters and have the pixelated art style, which justifies my suspicions of games that have a similar look.

I’m not stating that the game in question is made by hipster twats, but rather that the artstyle invokes that association in me.

  • Kainevil Rc

    Because it’s Swedish

  • Jettythesunfish

Man, how long has this game been in development? I’ve forgotten about this years ago.

  • blackice85

The Vita version was probably far enough into development that it made less sense to drop it. I’ll be very surprised if it doesn’t come to the Switch, it seems like a given for any indie now with how popular it is.

  • Person Man

That’s fair. But seriously though, Braid, no pixelated art style.

Like I don’t like the game, but it’s supposed to look like a painting or something. Where’s the pixels?

  • Mr0303

I have forgotten how it looked. For some reason I thought that it was. Still a shitty hipster game though.

  • Person Man

    no arguments here

  • panda

I’ve been looking forward to this one for years.

  • Shattno

Damn, I had completely forgotten about this, really looking forward to finally playing it

  • BFG

System has the highest attach rate and quite a dedicated fanbase. It still sell at steady and reasonable numbers in Japan too, enough to still have japanese games developed and giving some competition.

  • ProxyDoug

Looks good, not an Owl Boy but still very polished.

  • Eldhin Hellknight

Dem fucking nice!. I forgot the existance of this game; it’s great to see that it will finally be released (i found this game some years ago and, the stuff available at that time, was freaking great).
