Mega Man 11 Announced for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch – Launching in Late 2018

Capcom has announced Mega Man 11.

The new throwback entry in their ongoing series featuring the blue bomber is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.

Featured above, you can view the announcement trailer for the new game. Here is the first screenshots and artwork:

Here’s a rundown on the game, via Capcom:

Led by a talented, veteran development team at Capcom, the new game features tight side-scrolling action gameplay the series is known for while completely revolutionizing the experience for modern consoles. Mega Man 11 will be a great entry for both fans and newcomers to the series to dive into as it retains its signature challenge while offering a variety of difficulty options. The game is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, and Windows PC in late 2018.

The classic series takes a leap forward in visual presentation in Mega Man 11 with a 2.5D design direction introducing beautiful, completely hand-drawn characters and environments. A freshly redesigned Mega Man takes on Dr. Wily’s berserk machines, defeating Robot Master bosses and taking their weapons, in an ever-evolving fight for justice with new and unique enemy designs. This is just a small taste of information of what’s to come in Mega Man 11 alongside the start of the series’ 30th anniversary year, and fans can look forward to more details on the game in Summer 2018.

A release date is set for sometime late next year.

  • Uncle Ocelot

This is looking goooood. Inafune BTFO.

  • JackDandy

I hate Capcom.. But.. This is an actual new Megaman!… An honest-to-god new game in the series! I am a lifelong fan of this shit! I am conflicted! I still despise them for MML3!

  • NuclearCherries

    Holy shit he’s back

What the fuck? I hope it’ll be actually good.

  • Dewey Defeats Truman

I’m sure it’ll be better than nothing at least.

  • Captain Vidya
  • Travis Touchdown

It’s directed by Inafune, the series creator.

  • Bassgs

While a new megaman is almost always a good thing, am I the only one that thinks there’s something off about the animation? Maybe I’m just not used to not seeing sprites in a megaman game but it feels kinda weird

  • Wanderer

Not a huge fan of the game’s aesthetic as I prefer pixel art instead. In my mind the hi-res 2.5D look makes me think “mobile cancer”.

    Hopefully the gameplay is good.

  • MusouTensei

    Well damn.

  • It’s directed by Koji Oda.

  • grgspunk

Goddamn. This makes Inafune’s MN9 look like shit by comparison.

  • Wanderer

Crying like an anime fan on prom night, I assume.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Inafune is crying like an anime fan on prom night .

    Besides that, I’m excited.

  • Uncle Ocelot

Interesting way of spelling Akira Kitamura.

  • Uncle Ocelot

And he’s wrong about Inafune being the series creator, this is either shit bait, or he’s being an idiot as usual.

  • Uncle Ocelot

It did that on it’s own though.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Inafune was the artist and producer, he didn’t create the series.

  • Gale

    >Not Legends or Battle Network
    I sleep.

  • Ace

    Inafune and MN9 BTFO

  • Cubanoman

Time to fire up those pre orders

  • chaoguy

I think it’s because there’s detail in some elements like the background, but moving characters and enemies have a lot less detail and shading.
It’s early days, so I hope they tweak it.

  • Kitsune

At least it’s not advertised as 2.5D and sold in 3D.

  • totenglocke

So all of the core and X games are on all current platforms, what about the ZX games?

  • Captain Vidya

The running animation looks awkward, but the game seems to play like the 8bit games.

  • E15

I hope this paves way for more Mega Man games in the future. Also would be cool if you could play as Protoman.

  • Neojames82

Ah…this is a nice thing for me. Past couple of weeks have been shitty so this is bonus for me.

  • Matz

Gotta love visuals, that was what everybody was expecting from Mighty No. 9 until they threw us the abominable visual style with pizza explosions and all that stuff

  • Funtime Happysnacks

I dunno, it doesn’t seem like it’s any better looking than mobile games that have been aping megaman without competition for a decade.

  • Shocker Rider GG

  • Funtime Happysnacks

It doesn’t impress me at all, Capcom’s art team has become just awful. This is merely the latest in a long string of unimpressive looking 2.5D games (SFV, MVCI, Puzzle Fighter). How hard is it for them to hire some talented spriters?? This looks like a hundred other generic 2D sidescrollers that already stole Megaman’s style after Capcom ABANDONED it.

People will cheer for this out of desperation for a new mainline Megaman but if anything this only speaks to how low MM fans have had to set their expectations to be impressed. Mega Maker is WAY more impressive visually.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

The game itself looks like it plays good, the tightness and “weight” of the original all looks like its still there. The only problem is that 2.5D just doesn’t have as much charm as pixel art, and on top of that, the 8 bit style has become a defining trait for MegaMan to the point where it becomes hard to divorce the two.

Either way, this is still a day one purchase for me.

  • Funtime Happysnacks

Really? It seems like a different kind of bland than MN9, but still bland. Too washed out.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

They probably saw people bitching about not wanting another 8 bit game, so I guess you can’t win.

  • Funtime Happysnacks

I just don’t want sprite-based games to die out.

  • DrearierSpider

    It’s better than nothing.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

They won’t, there will always be indie developers to keep the niche alive.

  • Funtime Happysnacks
  • 2501

Man i was expecting sprites, but at least there’s new MM to look forward to.

  • Funtime Happysnacks

you are not even worth the oxygen you breathe.
you are not even worth the water it takes to flush your shits.

  • Josh

While I’d usually be the first to champion good sprite artwork (it’s be great if they made this game with robustly animated and colored 16 bit style sprites) I can easily tell why a AAA company like Capcom wouldn’t want to do it. Spriting is expensive and takes a long time and the end result isn’t anywhere near as versatile and useful in as broad a variety of circumstances as 3D models.

Besides, I’m sick TO DEATH of the NES style, if I had to choose between another NES style game and this, I would choose this.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

To add to the conflict, remember how the long time artist and producer of the series scammed us with train wreck of a crowdfunding project?

  • BFG

Highly doubt that considering indies have no idea how to make pixel art, it’s either very abstract or overbloated with details

  • Captain Vidya

Especially considering the success of games like Shovel Knight and Sonic Mania.

I will say, though, Cuphead looks damn fine.

  • Josh

    >not battle network
    >listing this as anything but a positive

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Good pixel artists are unfortunately expensive, but there are indie games with great art, look at anything by Joymasher for example, or other games like Freedom Planet and Alwa’s Awakening.

  • Captain Vidya

    >not getting into the deck-building-and-planning, pure-skill-based dodging that is Battle Network
    >not wanting that shit with online multiplayer

    C’mon, son.

  • Josh

I’m glad. I was sick to death of NES style sprites.

If you’re doing a sprite based game, do it 16 bit style or don’t waste your time.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Huh, interesting. I guess its like hand drawn vs CGI in movies.

  • Josh

    >deck building

No, I’m not an autistic 9 year old who plays card games. Thanks anyways.

  • Captain Vidya

    Hey, your loss.

  • CrimsonX4

This really does look better than Mighty Number 9… Inafune played us as a fidel, smh

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Wasn’t Battle Network 6 intended to be the last game story wise?

  • CrimsonX4

I’m pretty hyped! I really like what I see and love that Megaman now transforms when he uses Robot Master specials. Hopefully Capcom won’t mess it up 🤞

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

I think hand drawn like Cuphead or WarioLand Shake It would have been cool, it fits MegaMan’s vibrant and cartoony style.

  • grgspunk

That’s the wonders of proper marketing for you.

It’s brings hype, but not to the point where you start to get expectations that the dev can’t meet. That was one of MN9’s biggest points of failure.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Pretty ironic when you think about it, I never though back in 2013 that MegaMan would be the savior of MegaMan XD

  • Travis Touchdown

“We were going to release this in 2013, but we decided to let Inafune release Mighty Number 09 first, as a joke.”

    Based Capcom.

  • NukeA6

I’m shocked! Capcom really went all out with Mega Man. I almost feel like Half-Life 3 is a step closer to reality.

  • BFG

Good artists arent more expensive, the problem is that actual good artists among the fresh meat are getting rarer in the West these days

  • ProfessorFluffy

Story wise it was. However the series did kind of continue on the DS under the name MegaMan Starforce. Iirc, it was the same universe, just 1000 years in the future.

  • Forky

I wish I could care more, but original megaman titles are just so slow and old. Even if this does look really nice.
If they put actual story into this one like the X series, then I’ll give them full props. Give Megaman a proper closing leading into X.

  • :O

  • FrankieL

I wonder if 11 is going to have amiibo support like the legacy collections on switch.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

MegaMan is mostly loved because of its tight gameplay and killer soundtracks. Adding a melodramatic anime story just takes away from that like it did for the X series after X3.

  • Mr0303

This looks surprisingly good. I love the vibrant colours and the 3D style is not horrible. OK, Capcom, you have my attention.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

The scarcity of good artists increases their value, and not everyone who starts an indie game can afford that, so they settle for shittier artists or draw it themselves, this is why most indie games with pixel art look like ass.

  • Wanderer

Does any place even teach pixel art? It would be like having classes that teach BASIC programming on a Commodore 64. I think it’s a self-taught luxury at this point unfortunately.

  • nine_ball

I hope this turns out to be great. I’m so damned glad we’re finally moving past 8-bit pixel art and not having a charge shot. As much as I like pixel art, I’d much rather see something more akin to 16 and 32-bit consoles now. 3D is fine too, though.

  • Amethyst Eclipse

Walking animation looks bad what is this, Sonic 4?

  • What is your take on Star Fox 2 and the SNES Classic?

  • So glad they did not do the retarded 8bit bullshit that they did for MM9 and MM10.

  • ZX is one of the series which needs closure, but I doubt it’ll be next before Legends or Battle Network. I just hope they don’t stop with the original and X though.

  • Pixel games need to end and hand drawn games need to rise.

  • Or just use hand drawn graphics like cuphead or shantae.

  • Or legends?

  • Take a look at how Megaman moves and animates in Smash 4:

I don’t expect the animation to be on the level of Smash Bros, but it is missing something in the run and jump animations which will hopefully be corrected (I don’t want mods to make the game look presentable).

  • I think it might have been necessary for MM9 since we hadn’t had a take on the MM series in a long time and MM1-6 were the identity of the series, but would have rather had an advancement on MM7 and 8 whether that involved higher detail sprites, artwork like Rayman Legends or this sort of look.

  • Modern pixel graphics are cancer that are kept around for nostalgicfags. MM9 and MM10 was huge mistakes.

  • Why not? Do you not want silent movies to die either?

  • Audie Bakerson

I never liked 2.5d platformers (at least not without making heavy gameplay modifications for it like near ledge animations) because it was impossible to tell where a platform ended.

  • Squirrel on crack cocaine.

    It’s better then nothing.

  • Sylveria Shini

Yeah the only thing that stuck out to me was how he runs looks.. off.

  • Jettythesunfish

Welp! I expected nothing at all and I’m reasonably surprise. So I’ll begrudgingly say…bravo, Capcom. Bravo.

  • Bassgs

I forgot that smash 4 had a 3D megaman. I also hope they find a way to make those animations a bit less uncanny.

While I’m a bit skeptical, since it’s capcom after all, I hope this ends up being a good game

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Another year with Legends fans not being on suicide watch; sadly the same can’t be said for Classic.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

It may look good now but wait before you dedicate yourself to day one purchasing something from current day Capcom of all people. I just can’t see them not pulling Xovers and SFxT/MvCI crap.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

People bitching about 8 is how 8bit stayed until 10. Your people are either dying out or Capcom is trying to lure the casual audience.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

When has Megaman ever stuck to an ending?

  • OldPalpy

Hand drawn my ass it’s 2.5D that tries to look hand drawn but just comes off as looking bland, cel-shading doesn’t equal hand drawn.

  • Captain Vidya

Zero 4 and Battle Network 6, apparently.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Battle Network was supposed to end at 3 but I totally forgot Zero had a series.

  • Tubsiwub

  • A Loli que não jantou

not even gonna say anything until I can be 100% sure it’s not gonna get inevitably cancelled.

It’s Capcom we’re talking about here people, we can’t be sure of anything.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

The problem with 8 was that it came out when 3D graphics were taking over, so it was seen as dated.

9 and 10 were 8 bit because they were milking 80’s nostalgia.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Idk I’ve never played it, I just heard fans say the story ended with BN6 and the Starforce games were a continuation.

But in light of all the Hollywood sequels to old movies lately, I guess BN7 cold be made.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

They seem to be hit or miss, and their smaller projects are usually a hit like Monster Hunter Stories.

  • CRES

As a Mega Man fan I can safely say, IT’S ABOUT FREAKIN’ TIME! I do like the design and look of the game (I’m more neutral when it comes to 3D models verse 2D sprites, it’s always the artstyle that sells the graphics), and the only animation issue I have is Mega Man’s run animation (He seems to be just strolling around town rather than charging through enemy forces). But let’s see how well this stacks up in the Mega Man spectrum of games.

For now, Capcom you have my curiosity, now let’s see if you can get my attention.

  • TT

I feel like an anime fan with a good series to look forward to

  • Mighty No. 56008

Meh. Not that I’m against 2.5D or 3D graphics, but I just don’t find the art direction all that impressive or pleasing. I mean, it looks better than Mighty No 9 but that’s not really saying much!

Visuals is only part of the game though, so still hoping for the best.

  • EroBotan

background is great but rockman’s animation is not too good, the way he run lacks urgency and his standing normal shot is bad (why not two handed like usual?)

  • OldPalpy

They seem to be based off the stiff NES sprites which obviously look awkward in this context. The SNES MM7 would have been better as a base.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Hes running like a moon man, and I love it.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Shantae looked pretty shit though, too much like flash cartoon.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Seems like a tough comparison, I feel that they made him move faster in SM4SH because its a fighting game, while they slowed him down more in MM11 because they might have worried it would affect the platforming. Idk.

  • Sin V

I hope the cartoon uses these designs

  • EroBotan

ya, MM7 is perfect as a base. Pity they don’t use it … .

  • BFG

It’s a truth for whatever art speciality (even drawing). Unless you have the funds and means to be in one of the remaining good art schools that still teach the fundementals, self-practise is your sole possibility.

  • BFG

Why do I get this impression you absolutely despise anything remotely old?

  • Shattno

It looks really cool, I hope it plays well

  • True Goddess Reincarnation

He should have stayed dead. Now we get this.

  • I’m focusing on how well done the animation work is done and framed not how quickly he moves around.

I can obviously see much more in Smash 4 than this first trailer but MM11 could still make animations sell us on his run and jump without us getting lost.

  • ProxyDoug

Exactly what I was thinking. Other than Megaman’s animations, it looks so nice.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

my bad, I conflated the two

  • ProxyDoug

    How dare you!

  • Funtime Happysnacks

i’m gonna pretend you’re being sarcastic and move on with my life

  • Jared Bellow

Now I want Moon Man as a Robot Master.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

We had Solar Man in MM10, so it’s only logical to have Lunar Man next

  • Person Man

I disagree. Shantae looked great in-game. All the animation and models were stellar.

  • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

I know that it’s all about different tastes but I don’t understand how people whine about MN9’s visuals but praise MM11’s visuals while both games have equally dull visuals.

  • Michael Richardson

Some aspects of the art style seem to clash a bit, but at least it looks like actual effort went into this. I’m looking forward to this.

  • They both feel very devoid of character, very little connecting aesthetic. The biggest problem I can say is their animator looks like he was half asleep when he was doing anything; no IK, no weight, nothing. I’ve seen stick men with more depth and character.

  • CrimsonX4

Same… wow looking back I think no one would of thought about it either.
Well I guess with ends of the Ballad of Keji Inafune.

  • RetroGamer

So long as it can retain the gameplay and feel of the classics, I’m glad to see the graphics evolve. I do hope they improve the animations, though.

  • Forky

Story is all that’s left. Otherwise it’s just any other indi Mega-esque game.
Megaman didn’t exactly lose players with the story in X, Zero, ZX, battle Network, and a couple others.
Not that that was my intended point. I meant more that there’s nothing I’d care for left but story in Classic Megaman. I want the freedom, speed, and excitement that started in the X series. Not just the challenge and solid NES gameplay of Classic.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Well this is a game in the classic series, so I think the speed and heavy story should stay with X.

  • Dawn Blast

I think that is Exactly Why Capcom made this

  • Forky

If only that was why I suggested that I’m not excited for another classic title.

  • Dr.Weird
  • RetroGamer

Would love a physical copy for the Switch.
