Report: Super Mario Cereal Hitting Stores Now, Box Doubles as Amiibo [UPDATE]

[UPDATE 11/29/17]

Photos of the alleged Super Mario Cereal have been surfacing online, starting with Reddit.

It’s worth pointing out that the amiibo functionality isn’t a sticker as previously suggested, rather its built into the box with the scan area on the back.

A new report (via Cerealously) is pointing to a legendary comeback for Mario, to coincide with the release of Super Mario Odyssey. Nearly 30 years later, it seems we’re getting a new Mario cereal.

The mock up box art (featured above) was provided initially, to which cereal maker Kellogg’s was naturally asked to comment on. They actually confirmed the cereal is real:

“We cerealously appreciate your continued interest in seeing a Nintendo cereal, Chris! We hope you’ll keep an eye out for the new Super Mario Cereal that is hitting store shelves now. This star-shaped cereal features Super Mario-inspired marshmallows, and a limited number of packages will have an Amiibo powerup sticker that can be used on the Super Mario Odyssey game with the Nintendo Switch gaming console. We also appreciate your additional feedback regarding classic cereal favorites, and thanks for taking the time to write!”

As we still have no confirmation the cereal is actually hitting store shelves yet, we’re still not elevating this above a rumor for now. Nonetheless – the trans-media crossovers Nintendo is doing for Super Mario Odyssey are quite reminiscent of my childhood.

What other kind of cultural-crossovers would you like to see for Mario now? A new Super Mario cartoon series? Mario Plumber Tape? Sound off in the comments below!

Super Mario Odyssey is now available for the Nintendo Switch. In case you missed it, you can find our review for the game here (we highly recommend it!).

  • Anon_Amous

Perfect, I was just a LITTLE too young to try some of these.

  • Amethyst Eclipse

I’m surprised they didn’t go full cringe and call it Super Mario Odyssey Cereal you can tell they wanted to.

  • Justin Williams

Not Nintendo’s first foray into the world of cereal. I loved the split box Mario/ Zelda cereal.

  • Justin Williams

    That cereal was my jam.

  • Mentioned that too :P it’s been almost 30 years!

  • InkViper
  • NukeA6

They wait this long to make another cereal? Why didn’t they do this back in 1990 when Americans got Super Mario Bros. 3? A real wasted opportunity.

  • Mr0303

Turning a food item into DLC is quite insidious.

  • Matz

I’m planning to visit the US these holidays, would be great if Nintendo and Kellogs release this cereal before then so I can try it and use the box for any weird stuff they’re planning

  • ProtomanBlues

Can we take a moment to respect the fact that there is a cereal blog called “cerealously”?

  • Michael Richardson

Kimishima’s Nintendo seems to be trying to achieve the sort of cultural permeation that the company enjoyed in the mid 90’s in the United States.

The Nintendo Cereal System bits tasted like crunch berries with a smoother texture like a lot of Ralston cereals. Good stuff.

The little pinball game that came with it had one problem. The “balls” were edible!

  • RetroGamer

I remember the collector’s cards that came with the cereal. I regret not keeping them.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

the marshmallows have really come a long way lmao

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

If they ever make a galaxy 3, the starbits would make for a good snack.

  • Tubsiwub

…it has amiibo functionality…? What the hell Nintendo. I like collecting the figures, but I don’t want to own a box of cereal.

  • RichardGristle

It’s too bad they didn’t do a double with Breath of the Wild. I may buy a box just to keep it.

  • RPG

If this is true, I hope this comes to Europe as well, since I no longer live in North America, and is not just distributed in the USA. The Nintendo Cereal was just a little bit before my time, so I would be up for trying this. I would maybe even get an extra box to save, for the sake of posterity.

  • Justin Williams

    Gah, I feel old! Lol

  • Justin Williams

Stores in my area carried the Mario/ Zelda cereal until about 1991.

  • alterku

That’s kind of clever. I’d have preferred “cereal-sly” myself for the closer connection to the original word.

  • Uncle Ocelot

They’re doing an alright job with it so far.

  • Uncle Ocelot

I mean you could just cut it out.

  • Uncle Ocelot

    Soon everything shall become amiibo.

  • AnimeFan89

    Mushroom Kingdom Vice, lol!!!

  • FreshSnug

Oh great. Now I get to see even more Mario and Zelda tattoos.

  • FreshSnug

So did Nintendo find a way to censor the cereal?

  • Snorlaxation

Depends on where those tattoos are. Sometimes it’s a fun surprise.

  • Snorlaxation

like a box top for instance.

  • Snorlaxation

they reminded me so much of fruit gushers and stuff. that game made me so hungry.

  • Snorlaxation

even so, i’m kind of impressed.

  • FreshSnug

It’s really not. I absolutely loathe tattoos, especially of video game shit.

  • Snorlaxation

well see, that’s a personal preference. Beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that.
If you hate tattoos in general, than a video game themed one isn’t likely to change that.
Some people with tattoos think video game ones are dumb or too childish.

I like different kinds. I don’t particularly like the tattoos that cover huge amounts of the person’s body, or those guys with tribal tattoos on their arms, but otherwise, I dig tats.

  • Just when you thought amiibos couldn’t get any worse…

  • They removed the sugar because it could be bad for babies.

  • Why would you leave the USA to go to a place that is currently being invaded?

  • This is what you get for supporting the physical DLC.

  • Nintendo has already been pushing physical DLC so this is just everyday with them.

I am originally from Canada, and I left a little over two years ago to live with my girlfriend in the netherlands, who I have been seeing for a number of years, before the whole crisis in Europe started. The Netherlands has been relatively free from the issues that have severely persisted other European countries (so far). Besides, I left just after Trudeau got elected in Canada, and the place became a SJW cesspool soon thereafter, so I made my move at just the right time, and dodged a bullet there.

  • I understand leaving Canada as that place is a SJW controlled land.

  • RPG

Yup. I Got out just before the shit hit the fan. It is sad seeing that happen to a country that you have lived in since birth.

  • JohnnyCageFan2

Would credit cards work too? I can already see kids tapping their parents’ card for daily power-ups.

  • JohnnyCageFan2

“Super Mario cereal, it’s an odyssey in your mouth.”

  • Amethyst Eclipse

“Super Mario TM cereal, it’s an Super Mario Odyssey TM out now on Nintendo Switch TM in your mouth.”
