[UPDATE 11/29/17]

Photos of the alleged Super Mario Cereal have been surfacing online, starting with Reddit.

It’s worth pointing out that the amiibo functionality isn’t a sticker as previously suggested, rather its built into the box with the scan area on the back.

Developing.

[ORIGINAL STORY]

A new report (via Cerealously) is pointing to a legendary comeback for Mario, to coincide with the release of Super Mario Odyssey. Nearly 30 years later, it seems we’re getting a new Mario cereal.

The mock up box art (featured above) was provided initially, to which cereal maker Kellogg’s was naturally asked to comment on. They actually confirmed the cereal is real:

“We cerealously appreciate your continued interest in seeing a Nintendo cereal, Chris! We hope you’ll keep an eye out for the new Super Mario Cereal that is hitting store shelves now. This star-shaped cereal features Super Mario-inspired marshmallows, and a limited number of packages will have an Amiibo powerup sticker that can be used on the Super Mario Odyssey game with the Nintendo Switch gaming console. We also appreciate your additional feedback regarding classic cereal favorites, and thanks for taking the time to write!”

As we still have no confirmation the cereal is actually hitting store shelves yet, we’re still not elevating this above a rumor for now. Nonetheless – the trans-media crossovers Nintendo is doing for Super Mario Odyssey are quite reminiscent of my childhood.

What other kind of cultural-crossovers would you like to see for Mario now? A new Super Mario cartoon series? Mario Plumber Tape? Sound off in the comments below!

Super Mario Odyssey is now available for the Nintendo Switch. In case you missed it, you can find our review for the game here (we highly recommend it!).
