Amazon Officially Announces New TV Series Based on The Lord of the Rings

Amazon has officially announced a new TV series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic and legendary The Lord of the Rings franchise.

The new series is reportedly set before the events taking place in The Fellowship of the Ring, however considering the new deal is for a “multi-season commitment,” this is probably not related to The Hobbit and will be something they can make their own ongoing series.

The team at Amazon Studios apparently has “ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.” Furthermore, the deal includes a “potential additional spin-off series.”

While that’s all we have for now on what the series will be about, we do know production is being handled by Amazon Studios in collaboration with the Tolkien Estate, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema (and by proxy Warner Bros. Entertainment).

“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, Head of Scripted Series, Amazon Studios. “We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” said Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins. “Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

The new series will be exclusive to Amazon Prime under their “Amazon Prime Original” brand, and will be available to Amazon Prime members to stream and watch.

While many are likening this to Amazon boss Jeff Bezos’ attempt at “securing their own Game of Thrones,” it remains to be seen how much blood, sex, and incest this new TV series will have. What are you expecting from the new series? Or are you preparing to kill yourself? Sound off in the comments below!

Only clicked to ask what this has to do with what this site is named after, but at least the article answered that already.

  • Uncle Ocelot

Can’t wait to see how pozzed it gets

  • We try to avoid reporting on movies or TV that aren’t directly related to games, but sometimes I throw something out there because of how big of a deal it is. Plan is to eventually have a mainstream culture/gaming site to run alongside NG that will cover this stuff.

  • NukeA6

I don’t even want to know. What happened in the Hobbit is bad enough.

  • Exien

I really like the movies and games, but please make it so people can get easy into the series and don’t need all the background info from the internet. I still can’t 100% understand the movies even after watching them multiple times.

  • Dewey Defeats Truman

I’m not gonna give a shit about Amazon Prime until they bring over Kamen Rider Amazons like they said they would.

It’ll go the route of SJW Wars in [CURRENT YEAR]

  • Noah Howard

I was going to complain about how they don’t know what they’re getting into but according to the last paragraph, yeah. They’re aiming for the “R” crowd! Nothing to add!

  • MasonF2

    Have they still not?
The first season of that was really good.

So what, would it be called? The Maingamer? The Pulse Gamer? NIG? Since you know, IGN is exploding at the moment.

  • Mr0303

Great, another thing to shit on the lore.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Shadow Of War already had “we wuz knightz n shieet”, so it is a possibility.

  • Dewey Defeats Truman

Said they were planning on it back before S2 was announced but far as I know nothing ever came of it.

It’s not a huge deal since I’ve already watched both seasons but I’m always hoping for ways to watch toku without relying on torrents since I know people that get all uppity about that shit.

  • Madbrainbox

    Read the books.

  • Madbrainbox

    Prediction:It will be shit.
I’m done hoping for a good adaptation of Tolkien’s work.

  • Bitterbear

It’s not Netflix so it’s unlikely to see blacktino Puerto Rican hobbits twerking at The Shire.

  • Madbrainbox

If they made it after Silmarillion then that could work.Never for LotR.

  • MasonF2

Piracy feels a bit different when it’s something you would never expect a domestic release for somehow.
I watched the first season, but the first episode of the second just completely turned me off and the person I was watching the series with.

  • Sean Sharpe

My first through was one of dread…

But then I saw a something that left me cautiously optimistic. If they are working directly with the Tolkien estate, it might not be total shit.

  • Sean Sharpe

To be fair, there’s a lot of things in Tolkien’s work that the modern culture warriors would take offense to.

Elves? In their culture, there really was no difference between male and female, and the most powerful of all elves in Middle Earth during the events of Lord of the Rings was a woman.

The Men that served Mordor? They were never fully morally coupable for their actions because they lived in lands that fell to Sauron’s forces and basically where raised to believe that evil is good.

Hell, he even voiced disappoint in one of his letters that he portrayed orcs as a thoroughly evil race, even though there was no real way to show them in any other light in his stories.

I mean, just like SJW crowd bitches that there’s only white heroes, there’s enough shit in Tolkien’s work that would piss off the alt-right side too.

  • Uncle Ocelot

I have a feeling this will make the Hobbit and Shadow of War look faithful to the source material.

  • Grampy_Bone

    Gay black elf buttsex

  • Why not set it after Return of the King? I am sure LOTR universe has more villains than the Witch King.

  • RichardGristle

I don’t think many of us give a shit about the label of it. Almost everyone here is into things other than niche titles, but we’re here because we don’t want the fake and gay trash that the “major” sites are putting out.

Basically, as long as it’s objective reporting and the topic relates at least a little to “nerd culture ex dee” then just put it here.

  • RichardGristle

I’m ignorant of Tolkien lore beyond the LotR and Hobbit books and movies and The Silmarillion, but wouldn’t pre-LotR but post-Hobbit just be The Shire: A Slice of Life?

They could easily do a young aragorn thing, there was lots of stuff that happened in his youth iirc.

  • Cy

Please make it nothing like Game of Thrones.

  • OldPalpy

Because it would end up like the new Stars Wars trilogy so it would be a lazy rehash about a new ring.

    Its Amazon.

  • Heresiarch

Yeah this i going to rustle me pretty hard…

  • Heresiarch

Bullshit, Tolkien would be considered “Alt-Right” if he was alive today. Like almost every man of his generation.

While male and female elves were supposed to be more or less physically equal they had strict gender roles. Violence was considered to be beneath women and was thought to interfere with their natural talents to heal and nurture.

You know, kind of like with real world humans traditionally…

  • Sean Sharpe

No way in hell. He would certainly be highly conservative by today’s standards and loved Britain but he wasn’t nationalistic in the sense the alt-right commonly is. Most of the racialist garbage the spew would have disgusted him, like the Nazis disgusted him, and apartheid disgusted him.

(Not to mention, he most definitely wouldn’t be a fan of the anti-religious, particularly anti-Catholic shit I’ve heard from a lot of the alt-right.)

And yes; the idea of a female elven *warrior* would be alien to Tolkien’s work… But in some versions Galadriel fought in wars. Nor was he opposed to the idea of female warriors in fiction in the first place.

  • BFG

commonly is. Most of the racialist garbage the spew would have disgusted him, like the Nazis disgusted him, and apartheid disgusted him.

What the hell I am reading

  • Heresiarch

Yes, I’m sure Tolkien would be delighted with Britain being overrun by non-whites and Britons being a minority in their capital city, while trannies teach school children about the virtues of butt sex.
Meanwhile in the real world his writings are a love letter to the people of Europe and what you call “racialist garbage” was considered common sense in his time. The “Nazi” bogeyman has nothing to do with it and really is quite tiresome.

“Alt-Right” is not in any way anti-religious or anti-catholic, in fact it has very little to do with religion. It is however 100% anti-materialism and highly critical of post-enlightenment values. There are plenty of “Alt-Right” catholics and much like Tolkien they reject Vatican II. Tolkien would adore a kid like Nick Fuentes.

Tolkien’s view of women is 100% traditional, there is really no value in discussing marxist strawmen.

  • RPG

There was a time when I could have been interested in this, but after whatever the hell the Hobbit Trilogy was, and the trend toward just seemingly adding shit that contradicts the lore of Tolkien’s works in other instances, I do not think I am that interested.
If it they can somehow go off of the writings and lore set by Tolkien and stick to it (if it is before the Rings Trilogy, basing it off material from the Silmarillion could be interesting), I would be more invested, and willing to give it a chance.

  • lucben999

    We wuz rangerz n shieeeet.

  • lucben999

Dude, they call Jordan Peterson alt-right and a nazi.

The label doesn’t have to fit, it only needs to brand the heretics.

  • Jack Thompson

    I vote NIG.

  • Jack Thompson

Why does anyone expect live action adaptions to adhere to lore? It’s been movie industry standard to alter things heavily since always.

  • Sean Sharpe

Tolkien likely would care about non-whites coming to England or Europe. Again, in private letters and public speeches, he denounced many views that were popular at the time and his love for Europe was based on it’s /culture/.

So basically, he’d be upset that people would be moving to Brittan and not acting British. And he’d be just as upset when his fellow British people did the same thing.

He’d also be upset about LGBT things… But again, Catholic.

But hey, believe Tolkien’s on your side. Fully on neo-nazis have done if for YEARS before the alt-right was even thing. They were wrong.

(And no, I’m not saying Tolkien WAS progressive; I’m saying with as deep seeded as the culture wars is on the fucking internet, there’s certainly shit people could THINK is “SJW shit”

  • BFG

“hahaha im going to talk about tolkien’s opinions as if I know him”

  • Heresiarch

I get it everyone you don’t like is a nazi. Really though Tolkien lived in a time before race denialism was mainstream. So unless you can somehow produce evidence that he was a cultural marxist or an admirer of Franz Boas , I’m going to assume that he understood that culture is in no small part the result of collective genetics, that Britain is the way it is because it was built by the British.

I’m sure you haven’t missed the fact that LotR is 100% about white people and is pretty much entirely based on european myths and literature. If he was a fan of our glorious mulatto future, it certainly does not show in his work.

Personally i fell in love with his work precisely because it is decidedly anti-modern and watching people devoid of any talent to create their own worlds
pozzing up middle earth has me reaching for the pitchfork.
