Warcraft 3 and Diablo II Remasters Aren’t Happening Until the Originals Get Fixed

Following the news that Blizzard was remastering the original StarCraft, many fans naturally began to wonder how many of their other classic games they’d give the glorious high-definition treatment. At this year’s Blizzcon, we’ve learned that further remasters could happen, but unfortunately not until most of those games are fixed.

Peter Stilwell, Blizzard senior producer and part of the new Classic Games team within the company, said (in an interview with PCGamesN) that games like Diablo II and Warcraft III need to have their base games completely fixed before they get the remaster treatment.

He pointed to StarCraft being essentially considered “perfect” when it comes to balancing and features, so it was a natural first choice. Stilwell noted the map pool in Warcraft III is “stale” and that a lot of maps were just regularly thrown out by players, and that the Undead race has only one true build order, among other things that must be re-balanced.

It’s worth mentioning his team did recently put out a large update for Warcraft III over 15 years after the game originally launched, with new Public Test Realms and a roadmap of fixes and balancing changes they’re planning for the classic real-time strategy game. Diablo II, on the other hand, is going to need more work.

The action-RPG has leaderboards that are routinely disrupted by hackers, and that they plan on continuing the PVP seasons but maybe, eventually they’ll crack down enough to where you’ll see real people again. Considering hackers are a major issue with the game, it doesn’t make sense to remaster it before they find a way to stop their influence on the community.

In related news, Blizzard also revealed World of Warcraft Classic, another throwback release for the company alongside the MMORPG’s latest expansion, Battle for Azeroth.

What classic Blizzard games would you like to see fully remastered? Also what kind of features or additions would you like to see in the hypothetical remastered versions? Sound off in the comments below!

Well, here’s hoping WC3 gets fixed soon, then.

Hopefully the custom games scene explodes in popularity once again, too.

  • JonahTHD

Personally would like Diablo II fixed up because I would love a remaster of it (and perhaps a remaster of Diablo I)

  • BFG

I remember too the good old times of Vampirism, Sheep/Wolf survival, the tower defense maps, etc

    Those were the times

  • bgrunge

I really loved some of the alternate MOBA maps- there was a tank one and a naval one, and both were a hoot to play.

  • braneman

They can start with giving WC3 widescreen support that doesn’t stretch everything.

  • Maria Maasaa

Remaster Diablo 1 first. Add running and don’t add a lot of stuff from Diablo 3.

  • DukeMagus

I just want to see the dramatic moments of Warcraft 3 and the claustrophobic dungeons of Diablo 1 and 2 In Glorious HD™

it’s selfish, i know. but with the proper treatment, these old games could shine as much as they do in our memories

  • Z3DH

I wish the spegs at Blizzard would realize balance isn’t fucking everything.

  • DukeMagus

Nah, i kinda understand their point: they want to launch the remaster and never again touch the old one. Then all that’s left is fix some bugs on the remaster and the development cycle ends quick and clean.

but if in 15 years they’re still not happy with the balance, they sure aren’t holding their breath about it

  • Morlab

So they won’t provide new versions of the games because they aren’t E-SPORTS APPROVED?

Good to know where their priorities lie on game design.

  • DukeMagus

doubtful. Diablo 2 is co-op focuse, not esports. It still has some broken and some garbage builds here and there, tough

  • Bitterbear

The remasters are Windows 10 only.

  • blacksun

Maybe just add running in the town area. Adding running to the dungeon area would ruin the atmosphere and tensity of it I feel.

  • Maria Maasaa

Faster walking speed in the PS1 port didn’t ruin it for me. They’ll just have to make the mobs faster. Which would help with tensity and atmosphere. Doesn’t really make me scared with skeletons I can easily outwalk at normal speed and close a door to get away from.

  • Ace

I know it won’t probably happen, but I’d love to see a WarCraft 4.

  • RichardGristle

So another Blizzcon, another year of not caring about nu-Blizzard. Good to know.

  • RichardGristle

Thing is, nobody has ever asked for or expected perfect balance in Diablo 2. In fact, a huge part of the charm was trying different things out to see what was viable or not. Trial and error IS Diablo 2, especially before they added respecs.

In reality, the most harmful thing done to the balance has been them sticking their dicks into different specs with each and every patch (hammerdins BTFO). This was luckily always minimized by the fact that it’s a “reroll a new character often” kind of game.

As far as them not doing it because of “hackers online”, that’s just pants on head and lazy.

  • RichardGristle

Most of the dungeons in Diablo 1 are too small and claustrophobic to be able to add a full-blown run speed, especially the cathedral and catacombs. It’s not so much a mob issue but a problem of scale. Granted they could probably double the size of the levels or something, but they’d also need to tweak some of the systems (spells and abilities were mostly awful in D1), update cinematics, etc. Just seems like more work than they’d ever be willing to put in – especially if they’re too lazy to even want to update D2.

  • sanic

    Release starcraft ghost.

  • Zanard Bell

Well, they could always start with having INT as an important stat component of a spellcasting class in Diablo 2 instead of it being just a mana pool filler.

  • iswear12

I want Warcraft 2 to be able to run on my PC without fucking dosbox emulation
That’s all I ask; it’d be nice if it was “remastered” and not touched at all in any way besides upscaling without changing its integrity at all
At this point I don’t have much faith in Blizzard though.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

nu Blizzard would just water it down to attract more casuals

  • Riosine

And Spamming Teleport didn’t broke the atmosphere in Diablo I?

,,,That was the defacto way of moving in D1 and D2 (with Teleport charged staff)

  • Anon

You should give the Battle.net Edition a try. It ran in Windows instead of MS-DOS.

  • Madbrainbox

That’s one of the few things Diablo 3 got right.

  • Madbrainbox

My guess is that we’ll see the Warcraft 3 remaster a few months before they release the WoW vanilla servers.

  • Maria Maasaa

Maybe so. I’d just like to see how the game would be fleshed out.

  • iswear12

    The music doesn’t work?
I remember having problems with that.
