Perfect World Shuts Down Runic Games, Lays Off Most of Motiga Studio

Perfect World Entertainment has announced they’ve shuttered Runic Games (Torchlight series, Hob) and fired the majority of the staff at Motiga (Gigantic).

In the related statement, Perfect World said that Runic Games’ various releases will continue to be available to purchase and play. Gigantic will also get continued support by a core team that remains on the payroll at Motiga.

Here are statements (via Kotaku) from Perfect World and Runic Games:

Perfect World

Following the news that Motiga has reduced the staff of its studio, Perfect World Entertainment can confirm that as the publisher of Gigantic, the game will continue to be available on our platforms. A core team of developers remains at Motiga, who will work with us to support the game and its players, including moving full steam ahead with the upcoming November update and future content. We cannot thank everyone enough for their contributions in making Gigantic the outstanding experience it is today.

Perfect World Entertainment recently closed the Seattle office of Runic Games as part of the company’s continued strategy to focus on online games as a service. We’re grateful to the team for all of their hard work bringing incredible experiences like TorchlightTorchlight II, and Hob to life. Runic Games will remain a part of Perfect World Entertainment’s portfolio of studios, and its games will continue to be available to players, as we stay committed to supporting and growing Runic Games’ beloved franchises.

The staff reduction at Motiga and the closure of Runic Games Seattle were unrelated. Perfect World Entertainment stands committed to delivering the best massively multiplayer online gameplay experiences to our players.

Runic Games

Hey everyone,

It’s been over nine years since a rag-tag team of 17 developers helped open Runic Games. We’ve been so lucky for the community that has supported us and made us successful. Thanks to that support, we have had the chance to meet and work with the best people in the world. Our team here at Runic has released three successful games, and over that time we have seen many changes; team members got married, kids were born, but the most important thing is that we have become a family.

I’m sorry to say that today will be Runic’s last day open. Our focus is on our family here, and helping them find a new place to call home. If you are in games and looking for some of the best talent in the industry, please email [email protected]

For those that love the Torchlight series, there will be some news coming. And for all our fans, our community and multiplayer services will keep running even after the studio’s lights go off.

It has been an amazing experience. To my family here at Runic, I know we won’t be far from each other, and I’ll miss seeing you all every week.

You haven’t heard the last of us,

Marsh Lefler

Sounds like there’s nothing perfect about Perfect World.

  • Louis

I had Hob on my wishlist for a while now; guess I should take it off now. No sense giving money to publishers who’d do something like this.

Please link to an archive instead of direct-linking to kotaku if ya can
    Fuck ’em

  • Z3DH

And I just started playing Torchlight II again wondering if it would ever get an x-pac or something. Sadface.

Every layoff, studio closure, crunch story and shit Nintendo jerkoff post I hear about keeps making me think one thing: your wife’s boyfriend keeps her very busy at night.

  • Espio419

    Fuck china.

    >Perfect World Entertainment.

What the fuck is wrong with these fuckers. First, Champions and now this.

  • OldPalpy

Laffo Kotaku rhetoric just the kind of drivel I expect to see you parrot.

I hope Perfect World and every publisher that is doing shitty things like this will go bankrupt.
Take EA by the hand and take a long dive of a short pier you pieces of shit.

  • UnpluggedBeta

Reason #1421 why publishers should not be allowed to buyout dev studios. This is the oldest story in the book; go see EA’s long list of dev shop murders if you think this is a new thing.

The weak should fear the strong.

  • BFG

    Non Nintendo gaming is dying

It takes a certain delusion and a dose of fanboyism to believe a certain home company isnt actually a business corporation leeching on consumption-addicted customers in every way imaginable

  • RPGEndBoss

Jesus, they just released Hob. How about giving the game a chance to catch fire instead of just jumping the gun and ditching the studio. I bet they were banking on Hob being the next big thing and when it didn’t ignite right off the starting line, they bailed.

It’s a shame Runic keeps getting tossed around like this.

  • Z3DH

What the fuck does a lack of senior devs have to do with this closure? Runic had experienced devs who used to work at fucking Blizzard.

  • Nope Naw

I was going to pick it up at a later date myself. Since none of the money will go to the actual devs now, not gonna bother.

  • Omon Topno

Perfect World what do you expect I’ve had a run in with this shitty company with their Dota 2 Shanghai Major. The most infamous shitshow of a tournament that Valve fired them during the tournament. Sadly Chinese community still have to deal with them running the Chinese servers of the game. Now we meme them whenever there is a bad tournament running.

“Perfect World Entertainment recently closed the Seattle office of Runic Games as part of the company’s continued strategy to focus on online games as a service.”

So basically the studio was shuttered because they weren’t interested in making microtransaction-filled garbage, and the publisher would rather blindly chase the bubble like all the other lemmings.

I’d say I’d boycot Perfect World Entertainment for this, but that would be pointless, because I’d never play their junk anyway. Looking at the list of games published under them, Runic was literally the only studio making things worth a damn.

    >mfw people deprive demselves of some fine vidya just to avoid a shitty publisher
if you really wanna stick it to the man the best way is to download it, crack it and seed it

Nintendo does the most Talmudic jewery on console vidya
but their quality has yet to disapoint
even the shitties Nintendo game feels god tier when compared to the average non nintendo developed
do they fuck up, hell yeah, but they more than make up for it in overall quality

nostalgia alone was never the only thing keeping all the fanboys attached

  • OldPalpy

Bingo, the games as a service bubble has to be popping soon that model can only sustain a few games at once and is very similar to the post WoW MMO rush and it’s resulting graveyard.

  • OldPalpy

    What’s the Flavor-Aid taste like?

  • BFG

Intelligence Systems has gone very crappy (heard it was a japanese woman, with no experience of the franchise, responsible for the sudden and worse change of Fire Emblem since 3DS), current people at Paper Mario franchise have zero idea what made the previous titles charming (cant allow you to have OCs as NPCs/partners for instance), and I dont think I will ever see a new FZero game since the GameCube days (which was made in collab with Sega if I recall right). I also dunno why people still try to keep up with Pokemon considering Gamefreak keep scrapping all the good ideas they added from the old gameboy versions

Coupled with, like you said, Amiibo, recent Nintendo games dont have much appeal.

  • Correction console gaming and AAA gaming corporations are dying.

  • Sylveria Shini

Its from Schreier. Do you honestly expect it to make any sense at all?

More like only a few games at once are necessary to sustain studios when they’re pulling in whales.

Yeah, what the heck? This happening often? I’ve also noticed some accounts upvoting really old comments of mine.
