New World of Warcraft Expansion “Battle for Azeroth” Announced

Blizzard Entertainment has announced the next expansion for World of Warcraft.

Dubbed simply “Battle for Azeroth,” the new expansion is completely focused on the long-running war between the Alliance and the Horde. Featured above, you can view the cinematic trailer for the expansion shown off at this year’s Blizzcon.

A longer beta is planned for early next year, with a full release sometime later in 2018. Here’s a features trailer:

Here’s the full rundown on the expansion, via Blizzard:

Azeroth paid a terrible price to end the apocalyptic march of the Legion’s crusade—but even as the world’s wounds are tended, it is the shattered trust between the Alliance and Horde that may prove hardest to mend. As this age-old conflict reignites, join your allies and champion your faction’s cause—Azeroth’s future will be forged in the fires of war.

Explore Azeroth as one of six new playable Allied Races, including four you’ve encountered in your campaign against the Legion. Embark on a quest to earn their favor and unlock each race, adding their strength to your faction. Create a new character and complete the full leveling experience to earn a distinctive Heritage Armor set.

New Faction Continents

As a hero of the mighty Alliance, journey to the seafaring kingdom of Kul Tiras, home of Jaina Proudmoore. Untangle a web of betrayal and dark magic as you encounter power-hungry pirates, witches wielding death magic, mystical sea priests, and more. Explore the stony peaks of Tiragarde Sound, trek across Drustvar’s high plains and red forests, and navigate the intricate inland canals of Stormsong Valley as you convince this fractured kingdom to join your cause.
Prepare the Horde for war by recruiting the ancient empire of Zandalar. In this troll-dominated territory, ancient evil waits to be unleashed on the world as you battle crazed blood-troll worshippers, gargantuan dinosaurs, and titan constructs. Discover Zuldazar, the oldest city in Azeroth; unveil the bleak swamps of Nazmir; and traverse the deadly deserts of Vol’dun.

More Features:

Set sail for the previously unmapped isles of Azeroth. Battle in groups of three as you race against cunning rival intruders—or enemy players—to collect the island’s resources. Constantly evolving challenges await as you traverse frozen landscapes near Northrend, open the gates of an abandoned Gilnean castle, navigate a war between elementals and more.
Head to the frontlines and take part in a large-scale 20-player cooperative Warfront to claim a key strategic location. Build up your faction’s forces, lead the charge as your troops lay siege to the objective, and battle the enemy commanders as they make their last stand in this new PvE mode inspired by classic Warcraft RTS battles.
Take control of the Heart of Azeroth—a legendary neck piece entrusted to you by Magni Bronzebeard. Imbue it with Azerite, an invaluable resource that’s emerged in the Legion’s wake, to customize your armor with new powers and traits.
Experience the relentless conflict at the heart of the Warcraft saga. Play through six new zones filled with new World Quests, new World Bosses, new raids and more as you determine whether the Horde or Alliance will shape Azeroth’s future.
Stop the spread of the Blood God’s corruption, unearth the secrets of a lost titan vault, and much more as you quest to level 120.
Fight through all-new dungeons like the golden city of Atal’Dazar, and the outlaw town of Freehold!
Advance a new or existing hero character to level 110 instantly, and be ready to join your new allies in battle!
Find adventurers who share common interests through in-game Communities and join cross-realm social groups.

Finally, if you’re looking to get in on the new beta for the expansion, sign-ups are already available on the official World of Warcraft site.

The Nightfallen on the Horde side? That’s an odd choice.

  • heroyaldog

    people still play this?

  • Eldhin Hellknight

(almost)13 years and this game is still running. It’s very impresive actually

It’s almost like people exist outside of your little bubble.

Don’t take it personally brah, it was clearly a joke….. for real though, people still play this?

What happens when that Worgen agrees to answer questions from fans at Blizzcon:

  • Madbrainbox

Yep.Got into it recently again. It’s fun.At least for a while.

  • MoeIsLife

Not as much, still a decent playerbase. Most just don’t want to let go of their 20 Alts, Guild and Friends aka Sunken Cost Fallacy ;).

When Blizzard first revealed the expansion, they did a whole lot of retroactive continuity, such as claiming that the orcs only came to Azeroth to find a new home. When in fact they were just going to slaughter everyone to stop themselves from letting their blood-rage from slaughtering their own.

And I hate the damn Clark Kent-guise that Sylvanas has. She’s pure evil, everything she’s done thus far is getting people killed or trying to kill them, both within the horde and without. Where are the other faction leaders and why are they not reacting to the way she’s effectively trying to doom them? Where are the consequences of her allying herself with various ancient evil beings and then working against the horde?

  • AnarKreig

Accurate. It’s really how games like League of Legends, The Old Republic and Warcraft stay alive in spite of all the negatives.

Are we going to have tech trees again? Multiple starting areas? Will this game use Activision’s MM system that punishes people who are playing well? How good will the storyline be? THOSE are the questions that Blizzard needs to answer before someone like me is willing to invest money into this game again.

They keep going the other way, now you can’t even access all your skills if you’re in the wrong spec
