Team Rocket Returns in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, New Legendary Pokemon Details

Nintendo has confirmed new details for Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon ahead of the game’s release later this month.

The infamous Team Rocket are returning in the game under the leadership of none other than Giovanni – their new moniker is Team Rainbow Rocket.

Their lineup of bosses will include foes seen in previous games within the series. Featured above, you can view a new trailer showcasing the new additions and details.

Alongside the new villains is the reveal for legendary Pokemon like Mewtwo, Ho-Oh, and even Lugia.

All the legendary Pokemon from the previous games make an appearance in the new sequels.

Here’s a rundown on the new info, via Nintendo:

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, the greatest villainous organization in history appears! It’s Team Rainbow Rocket—made up of the bosses from past titles in the Pokémon series! The boss of this new organization is none other than Giovanni, who was also the boss of the villainous organization known as Team Rocket in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue, the first games in the Pokémon series. Giovanni has gathered all of the bosses from the villainous teams of the past Pokémon games, like Ghetsis of Team Plasma and Lysandre of Team Flare, and recruited them for Team Rainbow Rocket. What Giovanni and his allies are doing in the Alola region has yet to be revealed, but players must prepare themselves to square off against this group of the greatest villains in Pokémon history!

When players travel through an Ultra Wormhole in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, they will encounter not only Ultra Beasts but Legendary Pokémon as well, like Mewtwo, Ho-Oh and Lugia! Some of these Legendary Pokémon will differ between Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon. If players explore both games or trade with other players, they can obtain all of the Legendary Pokémon that have appeared in previous Pokémon series games!

The Battle Agency is a new facility in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon where players can easily rent powerful Pokémon for battling. When players don sunglasses and become an agent at this facility, they can take part in Single Battles using rental Pokémon. They’ll have three such Pokémon to command as they try to defeat the three Pokémon in their opponent’s team. The goal: try to win their way to being the best of all the agents!  As players progress through battles, they can receive cool items such as Gold Bottle Caps. The variety of Pokémon that can be rented for these battles increases as players mingle with other players locally or on the Nintendo Network. By connecting with strong Trainers, players will be able to rent powerful Pokémon to use in battle.

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, players will be able to collect stickers called Totem Stickers, which are located all around the Alola region. Players will be able to get huge totem-like Pokémon for their teams based on how many stickers they have collected. The totem-like Pokémon that players can obtain differ based on whether they are playing Pokémon Ultra Sun or Pokémon Ultra Moon.

Finally, it was revealed that the QR Scanner feature will return in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon. Players will be able to use the Island Scan to encounter Pokémon that did not appear in Pokémon Sun or Pokémon Moon, such as Charmander, Grovyle, Greninja and more.

Pokemon Ultra Sun and Pokemon Ultra Moon are launching worldwide for the Nintendo 3DS on November 17th. Honestly, they should’ve done away with the SM story entirely, and just embraced a plot in which Giovanni returns as the main antagonist.

The girl with the sunglasses in the bottom picture is 2 qt.

The dude on the mid-right looks like he is doing some shitty ‘Rick & Morty’ cosplay. and the dude on the mid-left looks like a bootleg Leo Whitefang.

  • RetroGamer

While gen 1 has its share of flaws, Team Rocket is still my favorite enemy organization.

  • Dr. Roswell. W
  • BaronKrause

They should’ve never left, all those stupid teams after were dumb as hell.

  • Captain Vidya

I’m one that hates all the Gen 1 pandering that’s been going on lately, but I love Team Rocket since they’re the one team so far that was grounded in reality by not trying to exploit the power of a legendary Pokemon that was beyond their control aside from Mewtwo, but that was a side thing.

  • Ithaca TrenchGun

Shout out to Schlomo Shekelstein on the far right of that poster.

  • Himegami Aisa

Wow, even Team Rocket has joined the diversity drive. I guess you can’t fault them for wanting the PR.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

They really wanna nostalgia pander while not putting in any actual work but the “all the original games were named colors” name really is god awful.

  • Fear Me I Am Free

He’s the Team Galactic Leader, Cyrus.

  • NukeA6

So all that stuff about Giovanni wanting to turn over a new leaf was a farce.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

    “Rainbow Rocket”
It’s one thing to fuck up continuity but that’s just flat out offensive. The only
ones who would bother are Ghetsis and the Team Plasma scientist; hell,
isn’t Cyrus stuck in Giratinas domain? Magma and Aqua were just
glorified athlete ecoterrorists. Flares leader was so down that he was proven wrong that he just stood there while his base collapsed over him.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Interesting, team Rocket is basically the NWO leaders of the Pokemon world. Rainbow rocket is goofy, but kinda fitting that an evil force pushes the rainbowfag symbol like in real life.

    Day 1 buy for me.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Battle Factory? Hehheeh; this shit’s totally the Battle Chatteau but with rental Pokemon to make it easier for the brain dead type of audience they’re going for.

  • Snorlaxation

    fever dream, here i come

  • Snorlaxation

that’s the kind of game that deserves to go on the switch or another main console. Something like Gold/silver/crystal but more fleshed out

  • Dewey Defeats Truman

Shoulda stuck with Team Great Rocket from the TCG games

  • Snorlaxation

what continuity have they fucked up? They basically created their own separate universe with Gen 6 that keeps the originals untouched.

  • Dewey Defeats Truman

I didn’t finish Moon (bored the hell out of me, and this is coming from someone that loved X) but Team Skull seemed pretty good.

  • Snorlaxation

    Team Fabulous Rocket.

But anyway, i kinda like the rumor going around that each of these Leaders are from alternate (non Mega Evolution/Fairy types) dimensions where they succeeded in their quest while the other villains failed.

  • Dewey Defeats Truman

Somethin really bugs me about how that image of all the legendaries is using stock art from 2004 right next to stock art from 2016.

I mean it’s not as clashing and weird as it would be if they used the original RBY stock art but still.

  • RetroGamer

One of the better ones for sure.

  • Josiah Wilson

I didn’t finish Moon (bored the hell out of me, and this is coming from someone that loved X) but Team Skull seemed pretty good.

  • chaoguy

Team Spectrum Rocket? Or hell, just Team Spectrum?
Rainbows are associated with death in Japan (a bridge to the afterlife) so I guess in Japanese it has more weight? Kinda??

  • Ace

    Fabulous~~~~

  • Zombie_Barioth

Actually, rainbows are pretty significant to Hawaiian culture, that’s likely where the idea for the name came from. Its literally called the Rainbow state.

  • Zombie_Barioth

They actually seem to be doing just that. If you hadn’t noticed, Faba is up there with Giovanni and the other villains, which obviously implies he’s working with them now.

The earlier trailers also imply that the whole thing with Lusamine getting infected by Nihilego didn’t happen, so any efforts resulting from that are gone too.

  • iswear12

I didn’t think it was possible for a single image to be capable of pissing off every single person in existence no matter which side or ethnicity they are LMAO

  • Zombie_Barioth

Considering the heavy focus on multiverses, that would explain everything. They didn’t mess up any continuity.

Platium’s ending is separate from D/P.

He would have promised Maxie and Archie they could make the world better by joining forces.

Same for Ghetsis, Cyrus, and Lysander for their goals, albeit who knows how he got them to cooperate and how he found them.

    And “Rainbow Rocket” isn’t offensive.

  • alterku

My secret hope is Giovanni’s number 2 is a Milo look-alike to really toast some almonds.

  • SLoWMoTIoN

Can they even add a ok story to this trash gen?

  • But can we catch a fucking Celebi?

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

I don’t ever remember anyone saying the 3rd versions were alt universes and always felt it was just a finalized retelling. With the start of the 3DS Pokemon games; they said that they were in an alternate universe which had a black team Aqua and a nerdy team Magma.

Rainbow Rocket is a stupid name and especially for the one team that’s the Pokeworlds Mafia.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Exactly; which is why original Team Magma and Aqua shouldn’t be there.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

That just makes it sound more idiotic since Team Rocket would have only used Rainbow for the name of a front company they work out of.

  • Snorlaxation

Except they are because of time/space portal shenanigans. That in itself explains it perfectly. That and a small cameo appearance.

  • Zombie_Barioth

You mean like the Celadon City game corner? They’re basically Yakuza, so having a goofy named front business would actually make sense.

If Team Rocket is making a comeback they would want to throw people off their trail, unlike every other evil team they’re pretty well known.

  • Zombie_Barioth

They didn’t, not until gen VI suggested every game is it’s own alternate universe. That would obviously include the 3rd games. I agree the 3rd versions felt like retellings, but they were probably more a long the lines of what-if’s. Kinda like they’re doing with USUM.

Fair enough, I thought perhaps you were alluding to the association with gay pride.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Since when did they suggest they were all separate universes beyond just Pre-3DS and Post 3DS?

No, just think it’s a reference to the original Pokemon games being color versions besides; this is in Europe so they’d end up making a BLM ProMuslim themed team if they were going for virtue signalling bucks.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Then why still use “Rocket” in your name while wearing the exact same outfit and emblem but with a rainbow background to said emblem?

  • Zombie_Barioth

Because they can can still claim “Rainbow Rocket” and “Team Rocket” are different and have no relation.

Most people wouldn’t look that far into it, especially considering Team Rocket disbanded years ago.

People in the Pokemon universe also don’t seem accustomed to crime, to the point of nativity.

  • Zombie_Barioth

In ORAS, they suggest the link cable as being a literal communication link between universes.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

That’s bullshit; it was always just a machine that swapped ownership as it transferred Pokemon between trainers. They never had any dealings with other universes back during the link cable age and the wifi age of transference was made out like two people going into a room to trade their Pokemon instead of two people from different universes. Even with the knowledge that it isn’t Pokemon anymore from the only person from the old games left being Masuda (who’s the key reason the current games blow) and all the other positions being new people; it still annoys me.

  • Zombie_Barioth

You say that, yet gen II introduced the time capsule, so you literally went back in time to trade.

You know how time travel and multiverses work, right? It wasn’t just a transfer machine since at least that point.

Anyway, its mostly just a way of explaining multiple versions and players’ actions from an in-game perspective.

    That, and encountering multiple legendries.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

That’s just time and not multiverse shit (though asking a friend about this there’s the descriptions involving Pokemon that have been moved across more than one gen). Either way it was a way for them to write stuff off with zero effort but they never once said anything about it beyond that in the games with the only instance being Giratinas dimension when it comes to multiverse and I imagine if they had anything working in such a way to actually allow interdimensional travel; they would’ve said it in the same places that always talked about the advances in the tech within the Pokemon universe.

  • Zombie_Barioth

Actually, the theory goes that whenever you interact with the past, you don’t alter that reality but rather create another branch or so to speak.

They even tell you you can’t bring stuff into the capsule that didn’t exist back then, which makes sense both in-game, and obviously technologically.

Celebi also can freely travel through time, which the player can do in HG/SS.

Then of course you have Dialga and Palkia, which are said to live outside Poke-Earth’s time and space.

Time and space travel has been a thing in the games, just as not something humans can necessarily do for the most part.
