Gameplay for First Playable Chunk of Psychonauts 2

Double Fine Productions has shared gameplay for the first playable milestone of Psychonauts 2.

Here’s a rundown of what the developer has included in the new milestone, via Fig:

The “First Playable” is an area of the game that we’ve built to test our new pipelines and workflows across all departments — art, animation, tech, design, cinematics, etc. We’ve tested all of this a lot during pre-production, but this is our first big attempt to create a fully arted up, fully playable chunk of gameplay with all the systems, art, gameplay, and tech working in the same place. You may see other teams refer to something like this as a “Vertical Slice” , though we don’t use this terminology because it tends to imply a level of polish and completeness that isn’t really required at this stage of production.

This doesn’t mean that we now have a final area made to shippable quality, there’s still a lot of work to be done. It does however represent a fully playable area that has all the things a level of the game should have: elements like player movement, combat, quests, experience, UI all working together with scratch dialogue and audio, some rough visual effects, textures, lighting, even a cut-scene. This means we can iterating on these systems so they can be as good as possible for the final game.

Psychonauts 2 is launching across PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One sometime next year.

    Psychonauts 2 is the first time I will have to actively separate my opinion of the creator from his product. On the one hand, Psychonauts VR shows they still know how to write humor similar to the first game, with no politics shoved in. If Psychonauts 2 proper doesn’t have any virtue signaling bullshit or obviously forced in progressive crap either, then I will play it and praise it and be perfectly happy. I just want more of the original and this looks to be that.

    But man Schafer you just don’t make it easy to love your games… Seriously, having a tantrum over Dean Takahashi and screeching about Gamergate in 2017… why? Why can’t you just be a normal fucking human being, why do these people always reveal themselves as insane reality-deniers? I honestly wish I did not know any of the political or social interests of these developers.

    no it was great!!, all the games that I am talking about are great, I am a huge fan of 3d platformers, and I have enjoy all this games so far. I am really looking forward for mario odyssey and psychonauts 2

    Never heard anything good about any of them with Mario looking to be a huge departure towards more open world play which can easily make it terrible and Psychonauts only hope being that his current team consists of the team Mr Shitface had back when making the first game. I honestly have no idea what DoubleFine has been doing since then and now. I have no idea what Hob is. I heard Rachet & Clank got fucked from Sony meddling and Yooka Laylee had lots of wide open spaces full of nothing and was far shorter than expected; not to mention it had issues with replicating the talking of Banjo & Kazooie.

    Does Hob count as a 3D platformer? I suppose technically yes as it is in 3D and has platforming elements, but to me it feels more like a metroidvania with a Link to the Past-esque overhead perspective.

    A Hat in Time just came out like last week (the PC version – the console versions have yet to come out), so it’s understandable if you hadn’t heard anything about it yet. I’ve heard nothing but praise with regards to it though (aside from maybe it having been delayed a lot…I think it was originally suppose to release back in 2014), so you should really check it out! You might be confusing it with Yooka-Laylee if you heard that it was a huge letdown, as opinions on that game are heavily mixed.

    Ratchet & Clanked got meddled with in the sense that it’s plot follows the movie that came out near the same time, meaning that it’s technically a movie tie-in game. From what I heard the gameplay is solid, but the plot suffered as a result.

    Hob just released a couple weeks ago, and it’s actually really awesome, but a bit buggy at places.

    All I heard about “A Hat in Time” is loli this, loli that. I wasn’t confusing it; I just never heard anything and the last coverage of it by this place had a pic or video (I forget which) that made the visuals look bad. Sony also forced the team into censoring Rachet & Clanked.
