Sega has announced another port for Phantasy Star Online 2, this time for the Nintendo Switch – however it’s still a Japan only release.

The new version is subtitled Phantasy Star Online 2: Cloud, and it will launch for the hybrid console sometime next year. Featured above, you can view the announcement trailer for the game.

Phantasy Star Online 2: Cloud will be a free-to-play title, and will naturally feature in-game microtransactions.

And here I am, playing it on my PS4… Doubt the Switch version will have cross play with the Vita/PS4/PC

  • MonsterGogo

    Never. EVERRRR. Ever.

  • Jack I played PSO2 with that fan patch a while ago but it became such a hassle to update everything constantly and shit
it was a fun game though and i would play it if it was officially in english…

  • buddyluv324

Dunno how Treehouse is connected to Sega since they’re not developing/publishing PSO2

  • mario9785ify

Yeah couse sony wants to “protect the kids”

  • InfectedAI

Online game, could still have issues. Not to mention it’s in Japanese.

  • InfectedAI

Is it Japanese only on the PS4 or does it have the SEA version that has English?

  • InfectedAI

Silly troll is silly. Ignore it.

  • InfectedAI

Why do I feel a sharp metal object twisting in my back? Who’s whispering “Please understand”?

  • Zombie_Barioth

I think he’s trying (and failing) to make fun of people who get angry at NoA Treehouse.

And you’re right, they have nothing to do with deciding what games get ported to the Switch, all Treehouse is, is a clearance level within the company.

  • Zombie_Barioth

No, they just want to ‘protect’ people from playing on their competitors’ systems. It has nothing to do with Nintendo, its not their game.

Not to mention Minecraft has cross-play on everything but the PS4, Rocket League is the same way.

  • Leandro Teixeira

Don’t know about the SEA version since I play on the JP, the PC version tough I know it has a english patch since some of my friends who play on PC have it and say it works fine.

  • Leandro Teixeira

I actually said I doubt since this version will be a “cloud” version because the game is 50+ GBs and constantly receiving new content it would probably piss off a lot of people making them constantly buy bigger memory cards. Having said that, it’s probable that it will be on it’s own server instead of being on the same one the PS4, PSVita and PC play together (yes you can play on the PS4 together with friends that might be playing on PC or Vita), plus this isn’t actual game footage from the Switch version, just some bit of trailer and gameplay from various Episode 5 trailers so there’s actually a chance the Switch version will look crappier than on the PS4 even tough the game is 5 years old.

  • Zombie_Barioth

    I don’t think they’ll do that.

There’s no reason they couldn’t put it on a 64GB card, but more likely than not they’ll use a 32GB one and have the game partially install on the system’s memory.

A couple games already do that.

The reason I say its Sony that’s against cross-play is they would rather have PS4 players buy a Vita for PSO2 on the go.

It may not run as well as the former version, but it surely beats the latter.

Microsoft pulled the same thing last gen with cross-play when the 360 was beating the PS3.

  • Shiggy Diggy Doo

Nigga the only updates are the actual game ones and those are automatic when you start up the tweaker. And the English patches are pop ups when you start the tweaker and doesn’t happen often.

  • Shiggy Diggy Doo

SEA version closed quite some time ago

  • Loli de 42 lagrimas pelo Mirio

well, there’s that… but still, at least access to the game will be possible, if some blessed soul decides to release an online guide, it will be all good.

    >continuing to complain about pso2 not coming west.
Just play the JP server already… There’s no IP block, it has a pretty good english patch, the english community is there. Stop waiting for a server that will either A) Never come, or B) If it releases it will probably be managed terribly, and seriously behind the JP server anyways.
Even if the game did come out over here, it would probably end up like PSO2’s SEA, Taiwan, and Indonesian servers, dead.

  • Leandro Teixeira

Did you even watch the trailer? The guy says it will not DL, you only need a good network connection hence the name “PSO2 Cloud”.
And like I said the game already features cross-play between all 3 platforms if for some reason the Switch can’t do cross-play it will most likely be because of SEGA since SEGA owns the servers, you don’t even need PS Plus to play on the PS4 because of that. You say porting to the Vita was forcing players to buy a Vita so they could play on the go, how else would they play it on the go then? And you do know that the PS Vita version came years first than the PS4 one right? I don’t see it as forcing players because you need to be constantly connected to the net and most people only connect at home which kinda discards the “forcing to play on the go” and if you really wanna see it that way, getting a Vita to play on the go is still cheaper than getting a Switch to play on the go (battery last longer too)

  • Leandro Teixeira

Gotta add that all those anime cross-over items could get gutted in the “localization” process, SEGA doesn’t even license their own main themes in the Yakuza games doubt that they would do it for PSO even if it came.

  • Leandro Teixeira

Guides already exist, pretty good ones too

  • sega sure hates america.

  • Zombie_Barioth

Right, then it’ll probably run partly (or mostly) on cloud services. I was thinking you meant the entire game would be completely streaming only.

As for cross-play, you miss understand. I’m not suggesting the Vita port was forced, I’m saying that I benefits Sony to lock you into their ecosystem.

If I’m a PS4 player, I can’t use the Switch to play on the go, making the Vita version more appealing even if I own both systems.

This isn’t new, as I said before they did the same with Minecraft and Rocket League, Sony is the only one who doesn’t allow cross-play.

The game doesn’t require PS Plus because it has it’s own monthly fee, Sony doesn’t require it for sub-based or F2P games.

  • InfectedAI

Oh wow, that didn’t last long. Small playerbase? Was that one PC only?

  • Shiggy Diggy Doo

Yes and yes. And a lot of SEA players just used the Japanese version and were extra pisses their hard work went into the shitter when playpark ip banned sea players from connecting to Japanese pso2

  • Leandro Teixeira

We still don’t know yet if it will have cross-play or not, we can’t assume anything on that department.
According to some groups I’m in related to PSO2 the game will fully run on Cloud, meaning it’s not a partial install or anything,it’s a full cloud service, since right now the game is bigger than 64GBs and the only thing bigger that I could find than a 64 gb SD card is 128GB which cost 60 euros.

    >The game doesn’t require PS Plus because it has it’s own monthly fee, Sony doesn’t require it for sub-based or F2P games.
And I don’t get this setence, what do you mean monthly fee? I’ve been playing for more than a month and they don’t cherge anything

  • Zombie_Barioth

Oh, right, I completely forgot PSO2 was F2P, not sub based. I stand corrected.

That makes sense then why I’d be cloud based.

Anyway, I wasn’t trying to compare the Vita to the Switch at all, I was talking about it from a business perspective.

The other guy was suggesting it has to do with Nintendo’s child-friendly image, I was simply pointing out why that isn’t the case.

If it were, surely Minecraft wouldn’t have it then.
