New Video Compares Secret of Mana Remake to Original Game

A new video has surfaced that directly compares the recently announced Secret of Mana 3D remake to its original Super Nintendo release.

Featured above, YouTuber Cycu1 has uploaded a video directly comparing the original game to its 3D remake, side-by-side. When you see the two versions compared directly, perhaps the attention to detail will come out.

Secret of Mana is launching digitally across PC, PlayStation 4, and PS Vita worldwide on February 15th, 2018.

I’ll probably get this during a sale or something, just to see how it compares, but the sprites certainly had more character to them. I feel like it’s hard for them to make this 3D without also increasing the level detail, or else it looks like a cheap mobile game.

I think Zelda A Link Between Worlds is the best recent example for me of taking an old 2d game and giving it a 3d upgrade that properly reflected and complimented the original.

Part of the charm of classic games, especially in the SNES days, was
that developers tried to pack as much as they could in those and pushed
the hardware as far as possible for these games. It doesn’t look bad, but I’m not sure I’d pay full price for it either.

Agreed on ALBW, it was well done both graphically and in gameplay in comparison to it’s much older prequel. The 16bit era was really great from an art design perspective. There was enough detail available that you could often recognize similar art styles and just know if it was a Square game, or a Capcom or Konami made title.

And I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but I still don’t know why they seem so reluctant to localize Seiken Densetsu 3. Any long time fans of Secret of Mana would be delighted to play it if they never had the chance before.

    The original looks better.

  • Mechonis

PS4 game. It looks like a low end 3ds game

    1993 – pixel art
    2018 – pissed on art

Now imagine if they’d have remade this using Legend of Mana-like art~.

  • Eldhin Hellknight

What the fuck happened with the first boss?

  • Kessek

    Looks like a 3DS port.

  • Uncle Ocelot

I’m willing to bet it was originally going to be a smartphone game, like the remake of the first game (which was also on Vita), but they changed it last minute.

What a travesty. It’s like they declared a jihad on my eyeballs.

I’ll still grab it if I ever see it on Steam for like $5 though.

I find it baffling that they went to the trouble of replacing all the 2d assets with polygonal assets but kept the long wait time between swings, by far the biggest complaint of the game.
Although it does look a bit shorter in the remake, but its still too long and only one problem. (charging up pretty much useless)

  • CrusaderEsper

It looks like a pretty faithful low poly 2D remake… except they replaced the girl with the cat hat in the village at 4:18 with some dude with a mustache. That for me, is unforgivable.

  • Fandangle

I’ll repost my post because gematsu is deleting comments criticizing it.

I’m confused. Do they want people to realize how utterly ridiculous it Is to remake a game that not only still holds up from an art style perspective but also from a game play perspective in today’s industry?
Give us a new Mana game. Don’t be a fucking cocktease. No one likes a cocktease.

I’m conflicted 2 characters look better and 2 characters look worse.

  • orbo

I’d rather they localize SD3 and release the mana collection on switch in english.

  • braneman

Frankly I’m more concerned about the UI, did you see what they did to the steam release of FF6? I Mean the art style there is acceptable (at best), but the entire UI was a copy paste from the phone version.

  • ProxyDoug

I like the new art style, but I don’t think it can be called an improvement at all. I think it would be great if the originl game came along with this remake.
