New Puzzle Fighter Announced for Smartphones

Capcom has announced a new Puzzle Fighter game for iOS and Android devices.

The game is being developed by Capcom Vancouver and will launch entirely free, worldwide, sometime later this year. Featured above, you can view the game’s announcement trailer.

Here’s a rundown on the game, via Capcom:

Puzzle Fighter features an outstanding roster of legendary characters and stages from popular Capcom franchises. Fan-favorites such as Ryu, Ken or Chun-Li (Street Fighter), X (Mega Man), Morrigan (Darkstalkers), Frank West (Dead Rising), and more come to life with VO and cinematic special moves. Players pick one main character each with their own strengths and benefits, to face-off in explosive gem-crushing action. In addition, two assist characters can be chosen to further enhance the abilities of the main character. Simple to learn but deep in strategy, this highly addictive puzzle game has players strategically building up gems and destroying them to unleash epic combos that can knock out their opponent. Thrilling real-time versus battles, rewarding single player options and an array of content to unlock await in this ultimate puzzle fight!

A soft launch for the game is set to kick off soon in selected countries. Puzzle Fighter will be playable in public for the first time at this year’s PAX West expo, within Capcom’s booth.

At least they can’t ruin this one with DLC. Maybe I’ll give this one a shot if my phone can handle it.

  • Matz

They can’t ruin the game with DLC, but they can still ruin it with a bunch of micro-transactions

    >See the title
“Nice, Super Puzzle Fighter was a good game, sad thing is a mobile game so we might get a bunch of Micro-Transactions but still will be a good time-killer”

    >See the atrocious art-style
“My god, the charcters look ugly as fuck”

There’s also a promo trailer showing off some gameplay.

Genuinely thought Jill was Nina from Tekken. Took me a few minutes to figure out who she was. Wish they would stick to her iconic design. Apart from that, I have no real complaints.

  • NukeA6

For a puzzle game? How does that get micro-transactions?

  • Uncle Ocelot

You’re very optimistic, all the big puzzle games on mobile have micro-transactions.

Look at the life bar and super meter. This is not a Puzzle Fighter update. It’s a different game, but with mostly the same gem break system.
And crappy Gungho looking models. Hard pass.

It looks like they took the original Puzzle Fighter artstyle and then drained it of all of it’s charm and personality, and left it as a hollow husk of what it use to be.

I mean, Puzzle Fighter was good? I like how they used Ken’s SFV look? Good god, why did they go with 3D? It just looks so bad. The bummer is if they went with sprites like the original the artstyle would have looked totally fine..

  • Neojames82

Look at Candy Crush and you will see how they can do this.

I think Puzzle Fighter is fine as a mobile game, because, well… It’s a match 3.

We can’t have those on consoles anymore.

Please Capcom. Stop ruining beloved classics.

“A match 3”. Have you ever played Puzzle Fighter? Puzzle games like this can’t be played with touch controls. Unless you claim that you can play Tetris with shitty touch controls.
