3D Remake for Secret of Mana Announced, Launches February 15 Worldwide

Square Enix has announced a 3D remake of Secret of Mana.

The new game will launch across PC, PS Vita, and PlayStation 4 worldwide next year, on February 15th. Featured above, you can view the game’s announcement trailer.

Fans can expect the remake to feature completely 3D graphics rendered in high-definition, talk events, full voice-overs, all while Square Enix promises to keep the magic and charm of the original. They also plan on including new features like improved gameplay, and an arranged musical score.

Secret of Mana was originally released for the Super Nintendo back in 1993. It follows the tale of Randi, Primm, and Popoi as they journey through an evil empire with the hopes of reclaiming the power of Mana, and restoring order to the world.

Here the game’s first screenshots and the original key art:

Pre-orders on the PlayStation Store include “Moogle Suit” character costumes for Randi, Primm, and Poppoi, as well as a “Tiger Two-Piece” costume for Primm, “Tiger Suit” costumes for Randi and Popoi, and three PlayStation Network avatars. Pre-orders and first-week buys on Steam include the aforementioned three costumes, as well as a downloadable wallpaper.

Got excited when I first saw this, was thinking that they were localizing the Mana collection for Switch =/

  • Kain Yusanagi

I said it before, I’ll say it again: NO OH GOD WHY NO!

The voice acting is shitty, the 3D is terrible, there’s no need to remake an amazing game with amazing assets as it already was!

  • Just Some Guy

Were people this butthurt when the 2D Final Fantasy games were getting 3D remakes? Who gives a shit? Just play the old games.

  • blackice85

Really, I’d rather they put the time into making a new entry into the series.

  • Zappa Jawaka

Well, you can’t please everyone. I’m looking forward to it!

  • Mechonis

Lmao those graphics are a fucking joke. Showing 3DS tier graphics for a Vita/PS4 game. Digital only. Probably going to be half assed

  • NuclearCherries

Nice. I’ll probably pick it up.

  • Matz

Might give it a try to this game if isn’t priced like a AAA game, and I don’t care about the graphics, anything is better than the atrocious graphics of that Final Fantasy VI “remake”

  • Captain Vidya

I mean, it’s not a mobile remake like the Final Fantasy ones were. I’d probably still emulate the game instead.

  • NukeA6

I hope part of the improved gameplay includes having magic level-up the same way as in Seiken Densetsu 3. I really liked Final Fantasy 4 DS so I am looking forward to this one.

Sucks to be a Nintendo fan though.

  • NukeA6

What’s the big problem here? It looks perfectly fine to me.

  • CrusaderEsper

When I saw this announcement and the video, I thought this was coming out on the 3DS. This is a PS4 game? What?

  • Uncle Ocelot

Moreso a Vita game, but even then it’s not exactly pushing the system.

  • Eldhin Hellknight

Graphics look average and i really hope that we will have the option to use Japanese voices. Aside from that… I want it. Secret of Mana is a mother fucking Masterpiece

Also, that tiger costume for Primm looks so good.

  • Eldhin Hellknight

Well, it’s US$39.99 in the PS Store

  • Chocolate ISISCream

How about remaking something that hasn’t been released officially in English?

  • RetroGamer

Not a big fan of the art direction.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Square actually does something surprising for once; guess this mean Chrono fans might actually get that taint they so wanted now that Dragon Quests anniversary celebration is over so.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

    Wasn’t that only one game?

  • Kiryu

Looks like shit even for a niche game and digital only doesn’t help it either.

  • MusouTensei

Wish it would get a retail release, digital only I will wait for a sale.

  • alterku

The art direction took a hard and deep left turn in the transition to 3D. After seeing this I’m more likely to want to replay the original again.

  • Matz

Welp, guess I’ll wait for a sale or something

  • NukeA6

FF3 and FF4 both got DS remakes.

  • Riosine

Well about the graphics… lets just say the Music track won’t interrupt anymore everytime you attack or an enemy explodes for sharing the same sound channel

  • Jack Thompson

Dear lord please let there be dual audio.

  • Sean Sharpe

Voice acting is as bad as I was lead to believe… But it feels odd this isn’t getting a Nintendo Switch release, given that the system comes ready for multiplayer out of the box and the best part of Secret of Mana was playing it with friends.

Also, SE, why? I’m sure a 3D remake with voice acting cost more to make than translating the damn Switch collection.

  • CRES

It doesn’t look any different from Dawn of Mana… Let that sink in for a moment.

  • ProxyDoug

I can barely look at it.
It looks like they picked the sprites and used a bunch of photoshop filters on them.

  • ProxyDoug

The 3D models are fine… well those wings could use some work, in fact the whole creature could, the voice acting is indeed atrocious… Yeah, I agree with you.

  • Grampy_Bone

The Mana sequels post-SNES have generally been garbage. Legend of Mana was okay, Sword of Mana was very good. Eveything else–crap.

It will be nice to play the original classic with smooth gameplay, updated music, 1080p widescreen w/ couch co-op. Shut up and take my money.

  • Jettythesunfish

You only heard the voice of ONE character; what do you mean the voice acting is shitty?

  • Jettythesunfish

I’m intrigued. Never played the original SoM. This ought to be nice. Also, why are people saying that the voice acting is horrid when we’ve only heard two lines from one character? Are folks always ready to start bawing about English dubs?

  • UnpluggedBeta

Pattern recognition; at this point, it’s a fair indication of the rest of the game.

  • UnpluggedBeta

    They “upgraded” the pixel art.

  • Jettythesunfish

Umm…no it isn’t. We only heard two lines from one character. How is that indicative of the rest of the game?

  • Asuka

SoM was a definitive game from my childhood, played with my older brother and my neighbor. I’m always excited to see the game remembered by others. This remake doesn’t look too hot though.

The pixel art in the original was beautiful. If this remake is going to us 3D grapgics then it would have been much cooler to get a 3rd person game, and actually get a new experience. 3D graphics on the top down perspective adds nothing – if anything it looks worse than the original pixel art.

The voice acting we hear in the trailor sounded like cancer. I hope there is at least a Japanese option.

I love SNES music, but an arranged score could make a nice addition.

Most critical of all though is online multiplayer, in addition to couch co-op. Nearly all of my gaming friends live in different cities. Even if I want to replay SoM with my older brother and old neighbor, it’d require online multiplayer with voice chat since we’re all in different places now. I highly doubt Squeenix would give it this though.

And all of this for $39.99??? Shesh… It be much better if they just added more pixels density to the original, gace it an arranged score, and included online multiplayer.

  • Just get it on PC during a sale. Digital doesn’t suck on PC like it does on PS4.
