Nintendo Switch Mobile Companion App Now Available

Nintendo has launched the mobile companion app for the Nintendo Switch.

Users can now download the app via the App Store for iOS and Google Play for Android. This is currently the only Nintendo-supported method of getting voice-chat for games on the Nintendo Switch.

Here’s a rundown on the app, via Nintendo:

The Nintendo Switch Online app is designed to help enhance your online gameplay experience on Nintendo Switch™. With this app, you can check game-specific services (e.g., SplatNet 2 for Splatoon 2), invite friends to play with you via social media, and use voice chat while gaming.

Do you play Splatoon 2? If so, you can make use of the dedicated SplatNet 2 service!

You can use SplatNet 2 to check all sorts of vital battle-related information, including match results, stages, and rankings!

Inviting friends via social media

You can invite friends to play with you in supported games via social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Of course, you can easily invite your Nintendo Switch friends, too!

Using voice chat while gaming

You can enjoy voice chat in different ways depending on the type of game you’re playing. Chat with everyone in your room or split voice chat into teams and have it out head-to-head!

*In order to use these services, a Nintendo Switch game compatible with this app is required. Splatoon 2 is compatible with this app.

You can use the Nintendo Switch Online app for free until the paid subscription service launches in 2018.
A persistent Internet connection is required to use this app. Cellular data may be used.
A Nintendo Switch console, a Nintendo Account, and supported game are required.
You must be at least 13 years or older to use this app.
Your use of this app is subject to the Nintendo Account User Agreement, available at

  • Mechonis

Voice chat through this service will not be available in normal Turf Wars or Ranked mode.

  • Travis Touchdown

Can’t wait to use this app properly!

  • Uncle Ocelot

As expected, the voice chat feature is apparently a huge letdown.

  • Nagato

Apparently you can’t even use other apps at the same time without the voice chat being put on pause :’)

  • Uncle Ocelot

Even looking at notifications will do it to.

  • Nagato

Christ, this company will never cease to amaze me.

  • Magnifico Ginormous

Only after your wife’s boyfriend gives you permission and only after he has good laugh over it’s pathetic voice chat setup.

  • Matz

You forgot that you can’t even block your phone while using it.

And Nintendo wants to charge money for their online services?

  • OzymandiasAeonis

They really wanna see how much they get away with, their idiot fans are already defending this why not just milk more dollars out them with a shit paid online service? They defend shit VC schedule, short run event consoles designed to attract autists and clickbait rather than the mass market, features locked behind toys, a poorly designed dock that scratches the screen what next always on DRM?

  • Zombie_Barioth

To be fair, this would actually be a good system for online play on the go, assuming you have a reliable enough connection and large enough data cap.

At home though, no, it’d be fine as an option for wired headsets, but a regular bluetooth connection should work fine.

The dock issue seems to be a possible manufacturing defect by the way. People have reported the bumpers on theirs were either broken off or missing.
