Hollywood-Produced Mega Man Film Announced

This is Niche Culture. In this column, we regularly cover anime, geek culture, and things related to video games. Please leave feedback and let us know if there’s something you want us to cover!

While Capcom and Dentsu Entertainment USA are working on an animated Mega Man series, we’ve learned (via Hollywood Reporter) that a standalone movie is happening as well.

The report notes Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (CatfishParanormal Activity) are being tapped to write and direct the movie.

Chernin Entertainment is producing the film alongside Heroes actor Masi Oka. The report also notes that Twentieth Century Fox had to negotiate for two years to get the rights, with the deal made this year.

That’s basically all we have to go on for now, unfortunately.

What would you like to see in the Mega Man movie? Do you even want it made at all? Sound off in the comments below!

    WHY!?

  • Travis Touchdown
  • Sigurd Chalphy

I don’t trust Hollywood to make a remotely decent Megaman movie. If anything, X-Legends needed an anime adaption ages ago. Please let this enter development hell and never see the light of day.

  • Hmm. The guy who’s voicing Zero here. Is he the same guy who voiced Link in the Zelda animated series?

  • Travis Touchdown
  • Daniel

Wow that’s some great credits the writers have to their name…yeah I’m full of shit don’t have any faith with the guys from paranormal activity behind this

  • Touma

If I may I ask, WHY!? WHO ASKED FOR THIS!?

  • Fear Me I Am Free

    Ew

  • sanic

I mean the megaman cartoon looks fucking horrible but I doubt this won’t be a bigger fuck up.

I can’t imagine this will end well

  • I read “tapped” as “trapped,” which might be more accurate

  • Skate or Die

Remember when Mega Man was a video game series?

  • I can definitely see this as a disaster in the making. You just can’t mess with a beloved video game franchise that has been around for 30 years. 😡

  • 2501

Why even consider making Megaman into a movie?

People who like Megaman only like it for its tight gameplay and chip-tunes. No one gives a shit about the story.

  • PaRaLLaXTHeTiCS

I hope that it’s terrible and campy.

  • deadmancrawling

I honestly thought that I was way over my fanboy phase but oh boy.
Please, just, please stop raping my childhood hero you enourmous sacks of pus, what did he ever do to you!?

  • deadmancrawling

Appropriate image, because if you thought the protomen edgified megaman, then JUST. YOU. WAIT

  • deadmancrawling

The megaman movie has been a shitty rumor since I was a kid, but now that jokes are real…
Honestly the people I feel most sorry for are megaman fansite admins, places like the rockman corner have been reporting every single glimmer of a megaman game for years, and now they get this shit dumped on them.

  • PaRaLLaXTHeTiCS

I say make it like Hardcore Henry. But with chip-tunes. I’d add with poker and strippers too, but that would be redundant.

  • braneman

It has to be a mix between Captain N Megaman and box art cover Megaman, that’s the only way they can pull this off.

  • bdp

The only way i see this working is if they take elements of megaman and adapt them for a movie instead of trying to copy everything.

  • Rough

That face is the exact same reaction I had when I heard about this shit.

  • DrearierSpider

Because the last thing fans wanted is a new Megaman video game.

  • Mechonis

How much longer are they going to butcher this series?

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Shitty idea, like all videogame movies.

MegaMan simply just has too much baggage to successfully adapt into a 90 minute flick. Its going to have too much stuff that will confuse new fans, and not enough stuff to please old fans. It’ll bomb like the Ratchet And Clank film, and every other videogame film.

The new MegaMan comics by Archie Comics are actually pretty good, I think it would be better if they took these comics and adapted it into an anime series similar to the new Castlevania.

Also, this seems relevant now: https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ae1d7928d42eb03485c63ced255e203401e64cc3829e9231199455ee685e517e.jpg

  • Lea Pastillaroja

why not make a MNº9 movie instead?
at least it’ll make fans laugh, unlike this shit that only torments them

  • The series is dead why are they still beating a dead horse?

  • Jettythesunfish

    Oh no….please no…

  • Mr0303
  • Zanard Bell

What a timeline we’re in, when Sonic is doing pretty fine with its own cartoon series and Mega Man gets a public execution.

  • goodbyejojo

    megaman has suffered enough

  • le master trole

    Dear god, no.

  • magicalfollower

Just let Megaman rest in peace, Capcom…

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

At least it won’t be based on my favorite.

  • Scruffy, the Janitor

Is it too much to ask for to get a game in that franchise? We dont want a shitty movie, we want another entry in the series.

  • MusouTensei

    No.

  • I KNEW I made that mistake. XD

  • ProxyDoug

I think the Astroboy film that came some time ago would be a halfway decent Megaman film even if it wasn’t good.
Maybe if they do an actual Astroboy film and call it Megaman, we might get something interesting to watch.
We will always have our dreams.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

    Pray the circumstances don’t change.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Because the entertainment industry is creatively bankrupt; why we have so many remakes, reboots, and adaptions these days. Nostalgia factor is just one of the easiest to bank off of.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

That’d just end up being Megaman by the Metroid Prime people.

  • hazardman89

    That actually almost happened.

    Look up Maverick Hunter.

  • Can’t wait to see Roll as a strong independent woman spewing about fighting the Patriarchy and how straight white males are evil every 5 minutes in the movie.

  • PaRaLLaXTHeTiCS

But then you wouldn’t have to deal with a bastardized Hollywood designed mega man.

  • Phynx

    the pain is unending

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

If it gets made in either medium; it will be shit no matter what.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

I know about Mavrick Hunter. ZX, Legends, and Battle Network lucked the fuck out:

  • PaRaLLaXTHeTiCS

Yeah, but i hope it’s the type of shit that can be appreciated years later for being shit. You know…something bad, but still memorable. The awesomely bad type of shit.

  • Mysterious Friend X

The movie doesn’t have to cover every piece of Mega Man lore that has accumulated over the years, or follow any particular game. The basics of Mega Man are not complicated.
