That new Castlevania animated series for Netflix has launched today, and what’s more, the series has been renewed for a second season already.

The series is helmed by Adi Shankar, (DreddPunisher: Dirty Laundry, etc), and features a voice cast including stars like Richard Armitage, James Callis, and even Graham McTavish.

As with any Netflix-original series, the entire first season is available to binge-watch right now.

In related news – Shankar also recently confirmed that he’s working on an Assassin’s Creed anime series, however it’s unclear if that series is for Netflix as well.

Oh god, another american “I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S NOT ANIME” cartoon.

  • Uncle Ocelot

I’d already forgotten about this. I guess I’ll check it out then.

  • The first EP was pretty good actually. Going to probably binge the rest later

  • Madbrainbox

Only 4 episodes this season.Hopefully the next one will have more.

  • Bitterbear

May I introduce you to Canadian anime?

I remember this, the art style reminds me of Totally Spies

  • Uncle Ocelot

Is that little alien voiced by Double D?

  • Bitterbear

They’re both from the same studio, Marathon.

I will acquire this shortly. Been eagerly waiting to see it.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Marathon sure does love causing fetishes.

  • AuraMaster DX (austin9568)

They were starting fetishes before it became cool.

  • SuuLoliBoob

It’s not the fact that i think it’s terrible, i just don’t think it should be classified as anime (Which it is on netflix) unless it was made by a Japanese studio which i don’t think Netflix did.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

I don’t know, those don’t look all that weebish; are they things you have to see to believe?

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Doesn’t everyone outsource their animation to Korea and Japan?

  • Bitterbear

Oops. I thought you meant animation in general.

  • Maria Maasaa

    Code Lyoko is freeeeeench

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

    ahh

  • AuraMaster DX (austin9568)
  • This was surprisingly good, to be honest. I’m legitimately excited for s2.

  • Mr0303

The show was refreshingly good. Somehow it didn’t feel campy and I’m loving how much of a misanthrope is Trevor Belmont. His catchphrase is definitely “I don’t care.”.

  • RichardGristle

Watched the first 2 episodes so far (Jap dubs). It’s pretty good, had minor nitpicks here and there about some changes in the story, but overall it seems very true to the source material. Voice acting and animation is good. Opening credits was fucking fantastic.

Only big complaint I had was Drac’s reaction to Lisa’s death. It was entirely underwhelming. But it is cool that they went into that part of the story to the degree that they did.

  • RichardGristle

Doesn’t Japan still outsource a shit ton of work to China and S. Korea?

  • Espio419

If Konami has no intention of releasing good games anymore, they should atleast start turning their IPs into excellent cartoons like this instead of pachinko trash.

  • SuuLoliBoob

Only for things that don’t make much of a difference (Like sometimes backgrounds are handed to Korean studios)

  • Kiwi Hoy

Anime is literally Japanese shorthand for animation though. They would call this anime in Japan

  • AnarKreig

It was a joy to watch. I’m hoping the second season will be longer though.

  • It’ll be 8. It’s not that much, but it’s an improvement.

  • Mysterious Friend X

Yes, anime often does mean just animation in Japan. But we don’t use anime to mean that, we are talking about either Japanese animation at large or certain kinds of Japanese animation. And even if someone in Japan calls Castlevania or any other American show anime, it doesn’t mean they are saying that they think of them as the same thing as their domestic animation. They are just saying they are animation.

  • Mysterious Friend X

Most production work is done in Japan, and when you look at the credits for nearly any anime there’s overwhelmingly Japanese names everywhere.

  • Madbrainbox

    Baby steps.12 for season 3 I guess.

  • Madbrainbox

A killing spree would’ve been way more satisfying but the punishment he has in mind is better overall.I liked how they set up the whole thing though.Made me root for Dracula.

  • ProxyDoug

    Obligatory Avatar mention

  • ProxyDoug

Being Adi, I was expecting the show to be at least not disappointing, and it sure delivered. I’m really hyped for season 2.

  • Uncle Ocelot

    Can’t wait for season two.

  • goodbyejojo

as much as they hyped up the R rating stuff, it barely had anything you haven’t even seen before, also the cursing felt forces at times, loved the animation tho.

  • Feniks

    Western adaptation? Pass.

  • Feniks

Sure but everyone says Apple is American brand. While not a single phone has been made there in years.

  • randr01d

Yup it was surprisingly awesome, but far too short. Hopefully season 2 isn’t far behind.

  • Scruffy, the Janitor

The pacing was weird. They relied on a story to be concluded in a later season. It only felt like it was half finished. It was really good, but it had pacing all over the place.

  • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

I can’t wait for new season. The first one was too awesome.

  • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

Konami only cares about money now. And since Netflix gave them money to let them make an animated series, they don’t care if it’s good or bad. Fortunately for us it was good. Sooooooo good. And it hurts, knowing that the franchise is dead.

  • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

Have you even watched it? Or even check the trailers?

  • Miguel Angel Opazo Arancibia

I was expecting it to be shitty AF, but it turned out great.

  • Feniks

    Nope. Like I said: pass.

  • Zanard Bell

I think this is what Kotaku should have been. Do more of these articles, Brandon.

  • Eldhin Hellknight

It’s maybe the first western adaptation that is actually good.

  • Eldhin Hellknight

That’s exactly how Berserk should have been done.

  • AT-LOW

    congrats ur a fagget

  • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

I would be a misanthrope too in his place with all this unfair treatment his family gets from the church despite their contribution to humanity.

  • Mr0303

He’s completely justified and I quite like him for being so.
