Compile Heart Announces VR MMORPG-Themed “Death end re;Quest” for PS4

This week’s Famitsu has revealed a new game from Compile Heart, following their curious teaser last week.

Titled simply Death end re;Quest, the new game is currently in development for PlayStation 4, and stars a young game programmer named Shin Mizunashi who’s trapped within a discontinued virtual reality MMORPG. Development is roughly 50% complete on the  title.

Mizunashi will be tasked with exploring the game world, clearing bugs and seeking out Shiina Ninomiya, a game director who went missing a year ago – only to mysteriously contact Mizunashi via email for help. Shiina has been trapped within the VRMMORPG since it was discontinued.

Battles pan out via turn-based, command-oriented mechanics, where you can also perform evades and counterattacks. There’s also a knock back system to throw off your enemies. If you really want to switch things up you can install game systems from the real world and change the genre of battle.

The longer you stay in the virtual world, the more your body gets contaminated with bugs and changes your style – if you get too contaminated in the game you’ll eventually die. The overall theme of the game is focused on the real world programming concept of “bugs,” and in game you’ll be challenging both virtual and real themes.

Further details, like a release window, weren’t confirmed.
