    Does anyone care?

  • Not me, that’s for sure. DLC won’t fix the massive problems the game had on the story front.

  • I thought for a second we were getting a new The Thing game, but oh well.

    Day 1.

This looks like the spiritual sequel to the highly acclaimed Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII that Final Fantasy fans have always, always wanted! Good to see Square Enix is finally listening to the fanbase.

FFVII Remake, step aside. I’ve got a new valentine and it’s ice cold, baby.

    Battlefield Fantasy?!

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

New “Extermination” never ever. I’m happy it wasn’t Lost Planet but I’m sad it wasn’t a Battlefield game but with Final Fantasy characters.

I still haven’t had the chance to play it. Could you go more in depth?

  • It has massive pacing issues, for one. Even setting aside the quality of writing, it throws you into the open world sections with little actual motivation. It takes a few hours to even just get a short cut-together summary (without voice lines) from the Kingsglaive movie. They let you run loose for ages and then suddenly the story parts kick in and where before you’d spend dozens of hours per chapter, you breeze through one after the other.

The whole initial premise is that your kingdom is in trouble and you need to go and marry Lunafreya, who you’re supposed to be childhood friends and engaged with. You don’t get to see her for most of the game, and by that point your buddies already tried to hook you up with one of their sisters. Once Luna appears, she’s almost immediately gone again. They try to tell you a love story (including with the ending) that has no basis, and is certainly not represented in the game.
Scenes that Noctis and Luna were *supposed* to have in the game (which were originally scenes between Noctis and Stella, who they replaced with Luna sometime in development) were instead put into the movie with a different protagonist, for example. Luna herself lacks agency and does nothing really valuable. Even in Kingsglaive her role was to do something incredibly stupid and need rescuing, then venture out on her own, wearing her shiny dress, because it’d be suspicious if she’d leave with her escort.

Beyond that, the game also opens up spoiling the twist in the end game: The final boss battle, and the fact there’s gonna be a 10~ year timeskip. The villain is immediately apparent the first time you cross paths with him as well, but his motivations are… dull. The evil emperor grandpa was forgotten halfway through it felt like, and there are a lot of plotholes opening up later on, even with these DLCs.

When the story picks up at last and the chapters fall like flies, it feels like you’ve just reached the midway point of your usual Final Fantasy… and then it ends. Badly.

I’d have to go into big spoiler territory if I’d say more so I’ll just keep it at this. You certainly notice that the writers had no real idea what they were doing anymore. All the great cues Versus XIII had on the outset were abandoned halfway by Nomura and then scrapped and changed further by the team that took over when he was pushed out the door. At least this way we don’t need to watch a movie AND have a stage play to watch in theaters, I guess…
