Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Officially Announced for Switch

Ubisoft and Nintendo have officially announced Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.

The new crossover game will launch for the Nintendo Switch on August 29th. Featured above, you can view the game’s announcement trailer.

Here are the game’s debut screenshots:

Here’s a rundown on the game, via Ubisoft:

When the Mushroom Kingdom is thrown into chaos by a mysterious vortex, it’s only natural that Mario, Peach, Luigi, and Yoshi come to the rescue. But nobody knows chaos like the Rabbids, and in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, those long-eared rapscallions will be teaming up with the Mushroom Kingdom crew to try and set things right. Four Rabbids heroes—Rabbid Mario, Rabbid Peach, Rabbid Luigi, and Rabbid Yoshi—will embark on a brand new adventure with Mario, Peach, Luigi, and Yoshi on the Nintendo Switch on August 29.

In Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, you’ll explore a Mushroom Kingdom that has been turned upside-down. Those iconic green pipes have sprouted Rabbid ears and turned white, and many other sights familiar to Nintendo fans have been caught up in the craziness. As you explore this colorful, vibrant world, you’ll collect coins, solve puzzles, and find hidden chests containing items and gear to help your team grow stronger against the challenging enemies that stand between you and your goal.

Your team of heroes will have to defeat enemies in turn-based battles, wielding unique ranged and melee weapons and using the environment to take cover from enemy fire. You choose three of the eight total heroes to make up your team during the single-player campaign, and you can swap them out to experiment with different combinations. Each hero has their own weapons and abilities, many of which can be cleverly combined to deal extra damage and affect your enemies adversely (e.g. set their butts on fire). The turn-based combat gives you time to consider each move, plan how you’ll use team jumps and pipes to reach optimal positions, and make the best use of each hero’s skills. The destructible cover means you can’t get too comfortable, and your enemies have some tricks of their own to keep you on your toes.

In addition to a single-player adventure that spans four worlds, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle also includes co-op challenges (each player controls two heroes each) with multiple difficulty levels for you to take on with a friend and test your skills. You can also use your amiibos to unlock new in-game features.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Kingdom Battle will be available in a Standard Edition, as well as a Collector’s Edition that includes a six-inch figurine of Rabbid Mario, a set of physical collector’s cards, and the original soundtrack. If you pre-order, you’ll also get a set of eight unique in-game weapons. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle will be released for the Nintendo Switch on August 29.

The game was previously leaked via different “industry insiders.”

  • M37 TrenchGun

I’m really shocked at how good this seems, it’s like baby’s first XCOM.

  • Tubsiwub

This game is super ridiculous and I don’t want it.

  • Josh

Please god let this game be a massive failure. I want Nintendo to learn to never do business with Ubisoft ever again.

  • Are our Eyes Real?

Why? The game looks legit good.

  • Nagato

Looks better and more polished than Nintendo’s own attempts at the strategy genre this last decade, even though that’s a low bar with Fire Emblem neutered and Advance Wars dead.

  • Belfry

Of course it looks good. It is exactly XCOM.

  • Uncle Ocelot

Those graphics are actually pretty good.

  • Belfry

I too can rip Mario models and put them in XCOM.

  • Magnifico Ginormous

Miyamoto sucked the soul out of Paper Mario but blows loads over this.

  • Josh

It looks like total shit. What are you talking about?

  • SuuLoliBoob

How…. How the fuck did they take an already cringe concept, and actually get something that looks and seems pretty decent out of it?

  • Are our Eyes Real?

And it looks like total shit because?

What I saw was basically Xcom with funny mechanics and mario+rabbits. Hardly what I would call bad.

  • Heresy Hammer

never getting a proper super mario rpg sequel
the pain, just wont stop hurting.

  • Bitterbear

For starters, it’s not a Post-Apokaliptic Hardkkore Grimdark, Hiperrealistik and Serious Game starring Grim-faced middle-aged men with a grudge against the world.

  • Michael Richardson

I… really want this. It’s gorgeous, and the gameplay is a dead ringer for XCOM.

  • Ankoku Tou

There was an autist here who claims to be the site’s resident “Nintendo advocate”, saying that this whole game was “FAKE NEWS”, oh boy how wrong he was.

That and faking excitement on Atlus’ remakes that just so happens to be on the 3DS, when he could have played the original titles on the NDS.

    t. autistic pretentious bandwagoner who’s wrong time and time again

  • Nintendo is just pathetic. inb4 the switch game gets canned and they opt to put it on the 3DS instead.

  • InkViper

It looks good, but I’m not a fan of the genre so I may have to skip it.

  • InfectedAI

Think I know who you’re talking about. He’s nowhere to be seen in the comments so far ha. To be fair though, Atlus 3DS remakes tend to be particularly good. I’m looking forward to them.

  • InfectedAI

I think the ridiculousness is part of its charm. And it fits both franchises since they don’t take themselves too seriously.

  • InfectedAI

Then get to it. I expect to be downloading the fruits of your labors off of Steam Workshop soon.

  • -blank-

I saw the leak, assumed it’d be a shooter and decided the game wasn’t for me. Having seen the actual announcement… I’m conflicted. It looks interesting and yet so dumb

  • Josh

    Straw, meet man.

  • Josh

    Let’s see,

-Boring, overly simplistic version of XCom that looks more like Plants vs. Zombies
-Entirely pointless crossover that doesn’t have ANY of the gameplay features of Mario, why couldn’t it have just been a standalone Rabbids game?

-Extremely retarded meme-based humor that you have to be 5 or be mentally challenged in order to find funny
-Introduction of memes into the Mario universe

-Tries to change the personalities of known Mario characters to suit their shithead French political whims

    It’s garbage, through and through.

  • Bitterbear

Is it not? XCOM is basically Grimdark Soldiers vs Grimdark aliens.
And Shadowrun is XCOM but with a Hot Topic clothing mod.

  • OSad

For someone who was really skeptical of this, I gotta admit, it looks really good. It was an insane 20-minute fever dream but I loved every second of it.

  • OSad

    – Boring, overly simplistic version of XCom that looks more like Plants vs. Zombies

It must take a massive hatred of rabbids to see Plants vs. Zombies in an XCOM-like game. Also, the game may be simple-r than XCOM but it looked anything but simple, the core mechanics are all still there and there’s even stuff that’s not in the original game, like using teammates to cover ground three-dimensionally, being able to traverse large parts of the map using something in said map, destructive cover that could actually push characters out in the open and possibly off the map, guns that can displace your enemies on the map (something that could carry to overwatch in an interesting way), hazards launched towards your characters that could backfire and affect your enemies in an adverse way…

That part actually didn’t feel like a kids game. It could easily be an XCOM spinoff that everyone could enjoy gameplay-wise.

    – Entirely pointless crossover that doesn’t have ANY of the gameplay
features of Mario, why couldn’t it have just been a standalone Rabbids
    game?

Because Ubisoft wanted to make a crossover, and Miyamoto liked the pitch. There’s Mario games out there already by the truckloads, and a new Mario game in production right now. And don’t tell me this crossover’s existence is pointless when we get shit like Mario & Sonic Olympic Games every other year.

    – Extremely retarded meme-based humor that you have to be 5 or be mentally challenged in order to find funny
    – Introduction of memes into the Mario universe

Where are le epic memes? I’ve watched both the reveal and this video and I couldn’t spot anything in either. Where’s the pepes? Feels guy? I didn’t see Mario vaping anywhere, nor was Luigi making italian hand gestures at the rabbids.

Are rabbids a meme? Rabbids are fucking terrible, but I don’t think they’re a meme. They might become a meme depending on the performance of this game. Rabbids are meant to be wacky and self-destructive, that’s their thing, their brand of humor.

    – Tries to change the personalities of known Mario characters to suit their shithead French political whims

What personalities have they changed from Mario characters? Mario has always been a stoic, do-good kinda guy. Luigi has been a normal bloke turned scaredy-cat in dangerous situations since Luigi’s Mansion. Peach has always been a reserved princess that’s friendly towards her companions, dislikes people who do the wrong thing, and rewards people who do good things.

They seem pretty much unchanged. Maybe they toned up Luigi a bit to ham it up to the kids, whatever.

    >Blah blah blah stuff defending the gameplay.

I don’t care whatever defense you’ll make up for this garbage. It still looks like boring shit at the end of it all.

    >Because Ubisoft wanted to make a crossover, and Miyamoto liked the
pitch. There’s Mario games out there already by the truckloads, and a
new Mario game in production right now. And don’t tell me this
crossover’s existence is pointless when we get shit like Mario &
Sonic Olympic Games every other year.

Mario & Sonic makes a damn sight more sense than Mario & Rabbids. People have wanted Mario & Sonic for decades, nobody in the history of EVER has asked for Mario & Rabbids to make a crossover. And it still doesn’t answer my question, what is the point of this crossover? It has nothing from either series other than the dumb meme jokes.

    >Where are le epic memes? I’ve watched both the reveal and this video and

Okay, so because it doesn’t have those specific memes you mentioned I guess it doesn’t have any memes at all? I guess you missed the part where the Peach rabbit was snapping selfies of herself or where the Donkey Kong rabbit did a dab? There was also a reference to “banano” or whatever the fuck that meme is.

    >What personalities have they changed from Mario characters?
Mario has always been a stoic, do-good kinda guy. Luigi has been a
normal bloke turned scaredy-cat in dangerous situations since Luigi’s
Mansion. Peach has always been a reserved princess that’s friendly
towards her companions, dislikes people who do the wrong thing, and

Did you even watch the trailer? Peach saw Mario coming and got angry, like an invisible Anita Sarkeesian whispered something in her ear, and then we’re expected to react with shock as she starts shooting enemies with a gun. They said in their leaked internal documents that they did this as a way of “liberating” her and making her more “badass”, ignoring the fact that she’s had many playable appearances in which she held her own and fought alongside Mario. They deliberately did this as a result of trying to push their stupid politics.

  • OSad

    >I don’t care whatever defense you’ll make up for this garbage. It still looks like boring shit at the end of it all.

There’s nothing to “make up”. You can watch the reveal trailer and you’ll see that everything I said is correct. If you don’t like it because it looks boring to you, that’s fine, I guess.

    >And it still doesn’t answer my question, what is the point of this crossover?

To make a videogame and put it out on the market for people to buy. Why do you think people make any sort of corporate work on this industry? A Ubisoft developer pitched it to Miyamoto, Miyamoto saw the potential of including a popular character from a well-known franchise into a new genre of game, and now they’re both giving it a go.

Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s pointless.

    >Okay, so because it doesn’t have those specific memes you mentioned I guess it doesn’t have any memes at all?

Yeah, I guess there’s memes on it. It was so inconsequential you had to point it out to me for me to realize it’s a thing, but fair enough.

Ironically, the peach selfie moment is another play on the rabbids stupidity. She’s so dumb that she’s thinking she’s taking a selfie, when it’s actually just a front-facing picture.

    >Did you even watch the trailer? Peach saw Mario coming and got angry,
like an invisible Anita Sarkeesian whispered something in her ear, and
then we’re expected to react with shock as she starts shooting enemies
    with a gun.

Characters aren’t allowed to get angry at each other anymore? We don’t even know what the full context of the scene is, you’re looking too fucking deep into this, mate. You’ve somehow managed to bring up Anita Fucking Sarkeesian on a game about rabbids.

  • Personaknight

Would this be the better Mario game if it was a tactical game where you only played Mario characters (ignore the rabbid ones you got) defeating Rabbits trying to restore the mushroom kingdom from random humor?

  • FrankieL

Got to play 20 minutes of it today. It’s a lot of fun and definitely makes me want to drop the cash for a Switch now. Granted, I never played XCOM, but regardless, for those who don’t have a giant stick lodged firmly in their ass will enjoy this game.
