First Details, Images, Western Release Confirmed for Code Vein, Bandai Namco’s Vampiric Dark Souls-like Game

Bandai Namco has shared the first details and screenshots for Code Vein, their recently confirmed Dark Souls-like action RPG set within a vampiric universe.

The game is described as a “dungeon-exploration” game with challenging RPG action, the game is being developed by the God Eater team. Code Vein is set for a 2018 worldwide release on unannounced platforms, and development on the game is currently 35% complete, with the game being developed within Unreal Engine 4.

The game’s story takes place in the near, post-apocalyptic future where players take the role of Revenants, vampires that naturally have supernatural abilities. You’ll fight with companions while also trying to discover the reality behind the world. A “Buddy” system will let you bring a partner with you as you explore dungeons.

The “Tempered Blood” ability lets you trigger various actions like buffing yourself, debuffing enemies, and even unleashing various attacks – depending on how much blood you fill your “Blood Veil” with. The “Blood Veil” is Revenant equipment that lets you acquire the blood of “Lost” Revenants. Appearing typically as ordinary clothes, the “Blood Veil” device will appear when you go to feed on blood, changing the user’s mask as well.

Here’s the game’s key visual:

Here are some screenshots depicting the characters and how they change up the look with the Blood Veil equipment:

The Revenants in the game live in a secluded, isolated society known as “Vein,” mostly because Revenants have lost the majority of their memories in their transformation from ordinary humans.

Once a Revenant gets low on blood, they revert into a monster known as the “Lost.” Weapons in the game mostly include melee weapons like swords, hammers, spears, and great swords.

“Code Vein provides a fresh anime aesthetic and blood-curdling gameplay twists to the popular 3rd-person action RPG genre,” said Eric Hartness, Vice President of Marketing for Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc.

“The talented development team at Bandai Namco Studios is creating a tightly crafted experience filled with plenty of challenge that our fans crave along with a smart and engaging story that is sure to draw players deeper into the world of Code Vein. Let the feast begin!”

Here’s the full rundown on the game, via Bandai Namco:

BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. today announces CODE VEIN™ for release on major home consoles in 2018. Feast on the blood of enemies through a journey across a massive interconnected world to unlock its mysterious sanguine past in this thrilling action-RPG.

In the not too distant future, a mysterious disaster has brought collapse to the world, as we know it. Towering skyscrapers, once symbols of prosperity, are now lifeless graves of humanity’s past pierced by the Thorns of Judgment. At the center of the destruction lies a hidden society of Revenants called Vein. This final stronghold is where the remaining few fight to survive, blessed with Gifts of power in exchange for their memories and a thirst for blood. Give into the bloodlust fully and risk becoming one of the Lost, fiendish ghouls devoid of any remaining humanity.

CODE VEIN is a third-person action RPG that finds players assuming the role of a Revenant. After stumbling into Vein, players are tasked to embark into the world with a companion picked from the various residents of Vein to uncover lost memories and an exit out of this new demented reality. The world of CODE VEIN is dangerous, full of vicious enemies and monstrous bosses to put players’ combat skills to the test.

Revenants also have access to Blood Veils, devices capable of draining the blood of their enemies in order to enhance their own abilities. Exploiting these enhanced abilities known as Gifts, players can change their form to increase their strength, weaken enemies, and utilize new weapon abilities with overpowered attacks. Utilizing the vast array of weaponry along with each character’s Gift, players can adapt and strategize to a variety of battle conditions that suit their play styles.

  • DrearierSpider

Goddamnit, the trailer had a way cooler art style than this.

  • acidthorn

It looks just like God Eater but with vampires (unsuprisingly).

    I have 0 hope.

  • Migi

I kinda hoped it was an anime game styled with the dark souls gameplay.

  • alterku

I respect the shit out of the souls games despite never having been able to enjoy them, so looking forward to more about this, but incredibly cautious.

  • FRAN

Major home consoles. So no switch

  • Mr0303

The characters somewhat clash with the environments. If the game is 35% complete they shouldn’t have really announced it. I guess they want to make a statement that a Dark Souls like game is coming even if one is not released this year.

  • Sylentmana

    Not really impressed so far.

  • Eldhin Hellknight

So… God Eater and dark souls had a child… Interesting

  • This looks like it could be cool. With the city-ruins aesthetic I’m worried it’ll be more like copy-paste God Eater with some Dark Souls sprinkled on top. I just hope I’m wrong.

  • well, since it’s only 35% done, hopefully they’ll change things so that the characters and the world around them mesh well.

  • Nue

That’s… pretty much what it is.

  • Feniks

    Loli vampires or GTFO.

  • Soaringfalco

What’s the problem with the art style? If game is fun to play and has a great cast the what is their to complain about.

  • RichardGristle

I think all the Dark Souls bandwagoners are going to be pretty salty about the anime aesthetics.

  • Kiryu

I like the artstyle but if the gameplay is souls like then i pass,it’s just not my cup of tea.

  • Also no vita.

  • Gaspar

I like anime and I like Dark Souls, but this artstyle is clashing in a weird way, I hope it looks better in motion.

  • Migi

I’m kinda doubtful cause its done by the God eater team. I’d like to see some gameplay before i believe it.

  • James Hewitson

Who was the nuffnuff at Namco who thought cel shading the characters while keeping everything else “realistic” was a good idea? I have nothing against cel shading but it really clashes with the rest of the aesthetic.

  • Lavenza

Why? DS is p much Berserk inspired.

  • Lavenza

    Nioh says hi.

  • Mr0303

Nioh is not published by Bamco.

  • Lavenza

Oh I was just responding to that a ds game this year part.

  • Loli de 42 Anos

    i think it looks cool.

  • Obbliglol

Hmmm, I’m not sure about the clashing art styles. Might look better in motion though. Colour me intrigued though, I am always up for more action RPGs.

  • Eden

It seems to me like this game will be less “Dark Souls” and more “What if God Eater was an action RPG similar to most western RPGs”

  • James Hewitson

Fair enough, some will like it other won’t it’s all good.

  • Tristan (Chili1)

Switch is a major home console senpai

  • Chocolate ISISCream

pcfags on suicide watch. The only mention of platform release is “Major Consoles.”

  • Sigma

    Hmm Animu Dark Souls?

  • Sigma

But what anime looks like Berserk?

  • Pilebunker

Feels like a Chuuni Souls to me. Hope it plays as fast as God Eater instead of Souls games. Hell I hope it doesn’t copy the Souls formula too much.

  • Agino Terra

so far i like what i see hope this game is like bloodborn

  • Klarktastic

    Don’t be silly lol.

  • Makoto

  • Fenrir007

Hopefully, unlike God Eater, this shit actually has dual audio.

  • Lavenza

Claymore and Berserk is cgi shit now so many of em.

  • BentoBlame

Somehow I’m getting Owari no Seraph-vibes from this with the post-apocalyptic setting + vampires + monsters.

    Looking forward to this!

  • Joe

So basically a game adaption of Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress…

  • Fenrir007

Kawaii Souls: Onii-chan Edition – Prepare to uguu~

  • Xerain

While it’s certainly a step towards the Atelier/Dark Souls hybrid game of my dreams, they’re still hung up on the “dark” aspect. They need to push it more! It needs to be a pastel fever dream!

Maybe I should finally get around to playing hotL#&*&(***(#%$)U%# Firefly Diaries.
