Bayonetta PC Sale Estimates Top 100,000 Units, Sega “Extremely Overwhelmed by the Support”

The PC release for Bayonetta has been doing quite well, despite appearing out of practically nowhere with almost no prior confirmation it was actually happening. The game has sold over 100,000 units on PC, according to Steam tracker SteamSpy.

To clarify how SteamSpy works, they track publicly-available data and aggregate it to follow how games perform, who plays what, for how long, and so on. Despite the un-official nature of the system, it’s generally accepted that analytics via SteamSpy are a good indicator of how a game is performing.

With the game seemingly doing very well on the platform, Sega responded (via PCGamesN) by saying they “do not have any confirmation of numbers.” However, they went on to say they are “extremely overwhelmed by the support for Bayonetta and love that we reached #1 on the Steam charts!”

Following the game’s Steam release, Sega noted they have plans to “explore PC port options” with their other titles. Did you double-dip for Bayonetta on PC, or purchase it for the first time? Sound off in the comments below!

More like quad-dip (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and now PC). Unlocked everything on all prior versions, still working my way through infinite climax on PC. I remembered how I hated Father Rodin each time when I faced it again on PC.

  • Brownninja97 .

100k is pretty nice for a remastered game. im surprised its been that good.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

For a seven years old game, those numbers are pretty sweet~.

  • sAy_YaS

Does that sales data include people who bought the game but haven’t played it? Because I bought it in launch but haven’t played it yet.

  • SunsetHaste

if your profile is set to public, hence the steamspy can accurately see the game as yours… then yeah, it counts for sure

if it’s private, I don’t know how it performs

  • Heresy Hammer

    >ps3
    I’m sorry for your suffering.

  • Taedirk

Sure would be a shame if Sega brought us more PC ports. Like Project Diva.

  • OSad

SEGA, I re-bought Valkyria Chronicles and Bayonetta on the PC to support your dumb 3D blue hedgehog addiction.

Now you have to hold your end of the bargain, and port the Miku games over too.

  • Sebastian Mikulec

    Now give us Vanquish please

  • Taedirk

    My man!

  • Lucky

    Join us Sega.

We could play forever and ever and ever and ever and ever…

  • Random Marine

Come on, Sega, where’s Vanquish? Give me Vanquish, please.

  • catazxy

Come on Sega, you know what you have to do now

  • Every time Sega releases an older, fan-demanded, port; people go nuts and it sells great (welllll, 100k is pretty low compared to console sales, but still, 100k is 100k) — so learn from this, Sega, and release the other fan-demanded titles :D

    Vanquish? Yes please!
    Skies of Arcadia? Yes please!
    Shenmue? Yes please!
    Yakuza? Yes please!
Jet Set Radio Future? Yes please!

  • There are two sections on the ownership stat, owners and players. You can see them on the Steam page if you use (and you should!) the Enhanced Steam extension for Chrome/FF. Here;

Not sure if my comment will be automatically blocked here, but we’ll see :)

  • DizzyGear

Prolly not gonna happen due to licensing issues with the songs/vocaloid itself unless they actually had the foresight to sort that shit out in advance to release the games on other platforms.
But we all know Sega isn’t that bright.

  • DizzyGear

Great now that Sega is catching on the fact PC players are willing to buy their fucking games if they actually make them available on the PC can they fucking finally release Phantasy Star Online 2 in English already so i can read a follow up article how amazed they are PSO2 is dominating the F2P MMO charts following its English release?

  • Guest

I wonder if they’ll be interested in funding another Bayo game, or if that’s totally in Nintendo’s hands now?

  • Eel Eagle

Had the PS3 version, managed to get beat a couple times before my eyes couldn’t handle it anymore. PC version is smooth as silk and I’m going at it pretty hard all over again if you understand my general intentions. ;)

  • Mr0303

After the patch it wasn’t that bad.

  • Mr0303

Good, the game deserves it. It’s one of the better hack and slash games and Platinum’s best creation.

  • NuclearKangaroo

SEGA is quite the puzzle, a big publisher whose main flaw isnt greed or incompetence, but rather their apparent obliviousness to how much people want to play their damn games

seriously these guys are sitting on a kilometer high pile of franchises people love, they should be re-releasing these games in most platforms and let everyone play

  • [Unoriginal Name Here]™

And console only gamers say they steal games, tsk tsk. The game is silky smooth whereas the X360 version, couldn’t handle it but still managed to beat it. Now Sega, please port over Vanquish, I do not want to ever play it on my PS3, that game is too fast paced to be running on 30fps.

  • Casey

You guys said this after the release of Valkyria Chronicles too! Just give us Vanquish already! You’ve already ported the damn engine!

  • Casey

Rodin is such an ass. From your comment you sound like a true fan though. Keep fighting and you will surely get the Rodin.

  • buddyluv324

Bring out Hatsune Miku Project DIVA!

  • Nagato

Nah, their flaw actually is incompetence, the very same which sank their console division back in the day, even: each regional division of Sega is basically a seperate company onto its own, with Sega Europe basically being this RTS/Football sim/PC porting machine.

It is, however, an issue that could be easily fixed, and most certainly beats the Nintendo situation where NoA and NoE are nothing but localization + marketing branches since that idiot Iwata took over.

  • Tristan (Chili1)

    7th Dragon III port pls

  • NuclearKangaroo

“welllll, 100k is pretty low compared to console sales, but still, 100k is 100k”

actually it is pretty excellent for a first week of sales, according to VGChartz, its sale numbers are ahead of the original xbox360 release, but behind the ps3 release

  • lucben999

I remember there being an easy trick to beat him with the panther form because dodge offset maintains your combo progress indefinitely when you dodge into a panther and run around, so you do a few attacks away from Rodin until you’re one move away from a WW and then dodge offset into panther form and run around until you have a window to hit Rodin with the WW, I think this even worked with the Kilgore glitch (if it still works on PC).

  • Migi

Sega is like a retarded child it’ll be suprised at about everything, If they just listened to fans in the first place we wouldn’t be stuck with the army of crappy sonic games and actually have gotten Bayonetta 2 multiplatformed… instead of exclusive on the lamest console last Generation. Not too forget the lame decision to make the Valkyrie Chronicle games psp games and then never bother to do a HD port of the 3rd game and bring it westward. Sega stupidity knows no boundary’s even when it comes to the Yakuza series.

Now bring us a 2nd Binary domain game! The most underrated new I.P they released last Gen.

  • Malcolm_Ecks

Japanese company. Not surprised. Its one of the factors that’s having Japanese publishers hurting right now. That and Japan doesn’t really do credit cards so their infrastructure for digital sales is still stuck in 2008.

  • Nobody pays attention to VGChartz because everything they post is fake :P

  • NuclearKangaroo

well shit nigga, then how can we properly compare bayo’s PC release to the console release to say if the numbers are low, high or appropriate?

  • OSad

If you gut some of the songs out, I could see it happening, though how much this new mangled game would resemble Project Diva on consoles is another thought entirely. I don’t see these games being super hard to make, especially since the template’s already there, so I would settle for an entirely new game on PC as well.

At least, there’s no shortage of songs out there. Hell, entire circles like Supercell, DECO*27 and KZ, some of the “hard hitters” of this series, could be under licensing restrictions, and you’d still probably have enough guys making Vocaloid stuff to make a truckload of games with decent tunes. You just have to know where to look.

I just want SEGA to throw us a bone on this to show them that the PC gaijin care about Miku as well, though I understand them testing the waters with safer picks like VK and Bayo before betting on the weebshit.

  • BeholdMyPower

Would definitely get in on some Bayo 2 PC action if by some miracle Nintendo decide not to keep all the toys to itself.

  • For such a great port they deserve it.

  • Riagan

Yeah, it was rough. It was the only console I had at the time so it was still better than notihng.

  • Why a 3DS game of all things to port? I don’t think that will work.

  • Tristan (Chili1)

The 3DS version suffered from framerate issues. Its a really great JRPG and the 7th Dragon series could use some exposure. 3DS to PC ports have happened before. Just like at Code of Princess. This isn’t like, say, Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3 which were mechanically weakened due to being on the PSP in some ways (like the way maps are handled). Its just a standard JRPG that happens to be on the 3DS.

  • Then do the same thing for the 2nd one

  • Envy Noson

    Bayonetta 3, make it happen.

  • InkViper

They paid for the game they published it, why should they share it?

  • DizzyGear

Oh they have a template alright. Miracle Girls Festival is practically a reskinned Project Diva game.

Weeb shit or not i’d say Sega knows damn well Miku is popular in the west and the arcade version of Future Tone pretty much runs on old ass stock PC hardware already which leaves me to guess that licensing is the problem for an international PC version of the game.
Just like how licensing bullshit was the reason we never get IA/VT even though it would have been an easy localization for Xseed/Marvelous. (That game got a fantranslation in a matter of weeks when the Vita got hacked…)

There are also other factors like Crypton Future Media being paranoid that potential nude mods could harm their Vocaloid brand or dumb shit like that.

Dont get me wrong i’d love to see the games on PC as well but i have low expectations.

  • Uncle Ocelot

    Never ever

  • Uncle Ocelot

Hopefully they do it at a faster pace than they’ve been at so far, in the year and a half since Valkyria Chronicles we only got two ports, one of which being Sonic Lost World, a very lackluster game.

  • orbo

For a port of an eight year old game it’s damn good, whats more is that unlike console sales which typically hit the dirt after a month or two games on pc tend to keep selling well after they’re released and steam holiday and summer sales massively multiply total sales.

If it’s got 100k sales now, it’ll get a hell of a lot more by the end of summer.

  • Fenrir007

I’m okay with them simply making the next Vocaloid game a multiplat with PC included. Because we know they are making more of that shit, it sells like crack.

  • Fenrir007

“There are also other potential factors like Crypton Future Media being paranoid that potential nude mods could harm their Vocaloid brand or dumb shit like that.”

Is that serious? Hell, MMD porn is so common in Japan.

  • Fenrir007

This. Consoles hit a plateau at 8 – 12 weeks, and then it’s a mega fast downward spiral. But on the PC? You keep selling over a long period of time.

For a title with 0 marketing and no previous announcement, I’d say it sold very well. Besides, they make more money on the PC due to less overhead costs (though the price is a lot lower than the original release).

  • Fenrir007

Maybe they could be persuaded for a share of the profits or some other business deal with the Switch? But I don’t think that will ever happen.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

EXTREMELY OVERWHELMED BY THE SUPPORT is a extremely hyperbolic. Those sales don’t even come close to the million on consoles, and that was sold at MSRP.

  • TylorW

“seriously these guys are sitting on a kilometer high pile of franchises people love, they should be re-releasing these games in most platforms and let everyone play”

    *glares menacingly at Capcom*

  • Fandangle

The plateau pretty much only exists for overhyped trash/flavor of the month shit. basically all AAA games. Nintendo has proven well enough that good console games can be long burners, or well they used to.

  • zrex2metagor

Best creation? Naaaah. One of their best creations? Hell yeah.

  • VLOCKUP

It’s okay when Japan does it.

Oh, and fugly bitches whine about 2D girls.

  • VLOCKUP

Nintendo is too stubborn to let that happen. If they want to share, they need the 99% of the profit.

  • Mr0303

    Do you prefer Vanquish?

  • gwadahunter2222
  • FreakinRican

You can play PSO2 right now with an English patch. They won’t ban you.

  • Conor Rynne

You have to remember that PC is a much smaller player base and we are talking about a last-minute game that’s a few years old already. Given that, 100k is an extremely good number

  • Enjoy your shit port and old ass games.

  • PixelBuff

You mean you mean to tell me a game that is pretty much universally loved sold well?
Next you’ll tell me the sequel SEGA refused to fund received glowing reviews across the board.

Oh well, it’s probably nothing and they should continue to ignore Bayonetta 3.

  • chaoguy

While I loved Vanquish, it’s not even Platinum’s (or Clover’s) best work. I’d encourage more games on PC though.

  • chaoguy

I thought PSO2 was shuttering soon?

  • chaoguy

Skies of Arcadia? God yes. Hell, give it a HD coat of paint and I’ll be happy. Full blown “remake” not necessary tho.

  • Exactly. We don’t need full remakes of *any* of those games, honestly.. just a lick of paint, some internal res upscaling, maybe some texture filtering to clear up some of the older 640×480 textures, and a framerate boost for 60fps deliciousness. That would make me supremely happy :)

  • What are you talking about retard? It is a great port. Do get salty just because the ps3 port is shit. Kek

  • DizzyGear

There was Tecmo Koei begging people not to make nude mods for DOA5 while theres no shortage of DOA hentai doujinji’s so yeah anythings possible.

Also in the Vita versions of Project Diva in the augmented reality mode the games actually block you from looking up Miku’s skirt.

  • TRUndercover

Bought it for the first time ever. Now joins another classic in the form of Valkyria Chronicles.

SEGA now has a chance to go all out and unleash sheer greatness. Vanquish, Yakuza series, P-E-R-S-O-N-A….

  • Luis Gustavo da Luz

Now we really need Resonance of Fate on PC (never was able to play Vanquish so i’ll happy with it too)

  • Luis Gustavo da Luz

Jet Set Radio Future !! That’ll be a dream come true

  • Fenrir007

Nintendo is the outlier, and even then only a select number of Nintendo titles. Might be explained by the lack of games on Nintendo plataforms, especially from third parties.

  • sAy_YaS

Yes I use enchanted steam. I’ve always looked at the top numbers (owners) and never really paid attention to players total because it seemed redundant.

  • John Smith

    that was the SEA version

  • ShaggyFace

Sega should’ve figured out by now since the solid debut sales of Valkyria Chronicles on Steam 3 years ago, there’s a strong demand for their games on PC. Resonance of Fate and Vanquish PC ports NEXT please! And while you’re at it, someone mentioned a 2nd Binary Domain game, and that too would make a great addition. Would also make sense to HD remaster or remake VC2 & VC3 to PC/PS4. Why those those games were just PSP bound is beyond me, great decision making from Sega. Another worthy mention for PC porting is the Yakuza and Persona games. Step it up Sega, bring more of your games to PC and pronto!

  • OSad

Yeah, I feel the same. The sense of speed you get from boosting around is nice, and it has a cool final boss fight, but it mostly holds itself on massive, impressive vistas, and gets repetitive fairly quickly.

An interesting game. Nowhere near B-tier like Turtles or Korra was, but it certainly doesn’t measure up to Viewtiful Joe, Okami, Bayonetta or MGR.

  • Sigma

NOW if only Bayonetta 2 is ported to something people actually own…..

  • chaoguy

Shame everyone said they wanted a FF7 remake instead of HD + Rebalance + New Content.

  • Audie Bakerson

Vanquish would benefit the most from a PC port though.

  • Audie Bakerson

Valkyria Chronicles now has almost 1 million PC sales. That’s more than double all the figures for the PS3 release, including Japanese sales.

  • Tristan (Chili1)
  • Evja

They made them only for psp because ps3 sales were pretty bad. Handheld is a safe choice.

  • Controls are tighter in Bayonetta but I want my boost dash

  • Agustin Freyre

Vanquish is their biggest letdown. Crappy story, short campaign, no replayability, confusing visuals, dumb control scheme, etc. The only thing that saved that game is well.. freaking Platinum, everything they make has a delicious flow and control that can turn any turd into gold.

  • 9Cirno9

    Project Diva!!!!

  • 9Cirno9

I think it’s their best creation.
