Outrageous New Sega Genesis Action Game Paprium Launches September 16

We first reported on WaterMelon Corp.’s new action-fighting game way back in 2015, but it seems like the game is finally on track for a release this fall.

Now titled Paprium, the new Sega Genesis game (you read that right) is launching for the console on September 16th of this year. Featured above, you can view a new promotional trailer for the game that I could absolutely imagine seeing playing back in the 1980s or 1990s, right alongside the game launching.

Described as a “postapocalyptic, outrageous, street brawler,” the new Genesis / Mega Drive game has five playable characters, cooperative play for up to two players, lots of game modes, and two dozen levels to beat down baddies through.

Here’s a rundown on the game, via WaterMelon:

Year 8A2, somewhere at equidistant point between Shanghai, Tokyo and Pyongyang, a Megapolis rose from ashes of the shortest but most devastating nuclear war in history, its name is Paprium. BRUTAL, MASSIVE. You will fight your way through the city with Tug, Alex and Dice. Redefine the word justice, deal with the BLU drug temptation, and more importantly: STAY ALIVE!

The game will initially be sold only on 80-megabyte Sega Genesis / Mega Drive cartridges – alongside a full-color instruction manual and a swanky box. Yes, this means you’ll literally need a Sega Genesis or Mega Drive to play the game, as it works on both PAL and NTSC versions of the hardware (the game is region-free).

The studio really is going all out for this release, as they’re offering a limited edition $150 professional-grade arcade stick.

Complete with high-quality switches, a clicking joystick, eight buttons, dual connectivity with Mega Drive / SEGA Genesis and USB, modern casing and finish (aluminium, stainless-steel and acrylic), each stick comes signed and numbered. It doesn’t include the game, however.

Here’s a look at the game’s physical cart, which sets you back at least $69 for the classic look, or pony up for the $89 custom box version, which you can view below:

You can pre-order Paprium over on WaterMelon’s official website.
