Worldwide Sales for Horizon: Zero Dawn Surpass 2.6 Million Units

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced worldwide sales for Horizon: Zero Dawn have broken 2.6 million units.

That new milestone was reached within the first two weeks of the game’s availability on the market. It’s also worth mentioning this includes both Blu-Ray disc copies, as well as downloads on the PlayStation Store.

Coming from this, these sales figures make the game the best-selling Sony-owned property on the PlayStation 4 to date, and Guerrilla’s biggest release in history.

Developed by Guerrilla Games, Horizon: Zero Dawn was first released for PlayStation 4 on February 28th.

Considering how no one cares about the game at launch, either Sony is lying about sales numbers (Again) or it’s not going to have a long shelf life at all.

Remember when The Order 1886 was successful? Sony lies about how well their products do al the time. They still won’t admit that Ghostbusters bombed.

More importantly, however, the simple fact of the matter is that Horizon simply isn’t all that good of a game to begin with.

  • HowlJenkins

“Considering how no one cares about the game at launch”
What are you even basing this on? Loads of people cared about this game at launch, and still do. Its all you could read about on /r/gaming and most gaming sites until BotW released.

As for how good it is, that’s your own opinion. And approximately 85% of people would disagree with it, if we go by Metacritic.

  • Travis Touchdown

The reception actual audiences had to the game. Metacritic is corrupt and easily manipulated.

  • HowlJenkins

Ah, so you’re basing this on one awkward scene you stumbled upon on YouTube. Sounds more legit than actual critic and user submitted reviews spanning various sites.

But I’m sure those were all paid for, eh?

  • Mr0303

    He’s a troll. Don’t bother.

  • Mr0303

The game is really good, so the sales are completely deserved. Hopefully the sequel will have less Ashly Burch.

  • wavemotioncannon

I think it takes itself too seriously for a game about robot dinosaurs, its weird, but not weird enough.

  • HowlJenkins

Phew, good to know the troll vibes I was getting were right.

  • Uncle Ocelot

    This is just sad, man.

  • gwadahunter2222

    Sales better than I expected

  • doog

Thats true metacritic has weighted scoring, but its stilll highly recieved through other sources.

  • Madbrainbox

It has mechanical dinosaurs in it.That shit sells itself.

  • Madbrainbox

    A troll or a fanboy?

  • SuuLoliBoob

    >Awkward “SCENE”

Oh god, it’s not just one scene. Then you have yourself the bugs, collision issues, and a whole mixture of shitty animation and writing that sounds like they hired the nearest 7th grader.

  • The Bandsaw Vigilante

…Dude, just quit already. Seriously. With each new post, you’re making yourself look stupider and stupider.

  • Travis Touchdown

I agree. Sony needs to stop being so dishonest with their sales numbers.

Horizon has very clearly underperformed, but they aren’t admitting it.

  • Travis Touchdown

I like how you don’t address any of my points.

The simple fact is, the only reason Horizon is being praised is to give Sony fanboys this idea that it is competing with Zelda. It is not. In fact, it’s been outright demolished by it.

  • Travis Touchdown

This. The game has a whole host of problems that people simply aren’t addressing. The AI issues in particular practically break the game. I saw a stream where Aloy just stood in one place, pegging a robot with arrows as it just stood there, looking for her.

Seeing fanboys like Jim Sterling give this a 9 is simply laughable.

  • Mr0303

He seems a bit too batshit to be a fanboy. A bit too one note.

  • Neojames82

Guess this will please the SJW crowd. Hopefully though Nier sales will crush it. At least this will outsell Mass Effect Andromeda so that’s a semi-win in itself.

  • Madbrainbox

I don’t know mate.He seems obsessed. But you may be right.

  • Mr0303

Either way I don’t care. He should be ignored.

  • No, he’s talking about the lengths you are going to put down a game. You’re speaking to a void. No one else here is listening or even really agreeing with you.

  • The Bandsaw Vigilante

LOL, because you have no points, and you’re simply frantically screaming into a paper bag at this juncture.

Halfwitted nerd-hateboners come and go, my friend. Maybe one day yours will wear off, but it seems today is not the day for that to happen.

  • Travis Touchdown

Talk about projecting. This is exactly what you people do with Nintendonat large.

  • Uncle Ocelot

The game is shit, yes, but that doesn’t mean that Sony is making up the fact it sold well. People buy shit games and movies all the time.

  • Nick

It’s okay that you have a garbage console in Xbox, we feel for you we really do. You can always change.

  • Mr0303

I’m about 50 hours in and so far there aren’t any blatantly obvious SJW themes. In a couple of places there are suspiciously many strong independent women and the race diversity in the different tribes is rather jarring at times, but I heard that this was some sort of plot point.

I honestly don’t think that Nier will outsell it.

  • Venus

the fact that you think depicting strong women and race diversity is an issue is what I find far more worrying. You know not everything in this world has to be 99% white for it to be good. truth of the matter is that movies and games where 99% characters are white is going to eventually stop being the norm.

  • Mr0303

I never said it was an issue. I’m just stating that it looked like forced diversity.

“You know not everything in this world has to be 99% white for it to be good.” -I never claimed that.

Also games and movies were never 99% white.

  • AuraMaster DX (austin9568)

    “You’re speaking to a void”
Even Exdeath’s not listenin to this shit

  • The PS4’s diverse and large userbase will ensure that all games do well. From the niche like Nier and Senran Kagura to the mainstream like Horizon and Uncharted.

The PS4 has games for everyone.

  • Neojames82

Nier probably won’t outsell it, you’re right. Though I’m hearing it is selling well in both Japan and the US, could easy reach a million, which is really good for it being a niche title. And yeah, I’ve heard it isn’t too SJW preachy, I’m more saying that all the SJWs are going to use this game as a rallying point to show us evil white men gamers that the tide is turning….which is really isn’t.

  • Neojames82

I also don’t like it when in media they force diversity into something. I feel it actually does a disservice to minorities because they are just token characters. You need to create a good and interesting character first; whatever their race; gender or sexuality is completely moot if they are a poorly developed character.

  • Nanashi

I think he means the race diversity thing more in the sense that it’s odd from a logical point of view – that, if a tribe sticks to reproducing within itself for a long while (as initially seems to be the case here), then even if the tribe had started from a diverse group of races, eventually their genes get mixed to the point that there’ll be a single, blended together race. Which is akin to, you know, how the various races of the world came to be in the first place.

  • Nanashi

Let me know if it stays that way up until the very end or not, as I’m quite curious about it myself. I’ve heard that the SJW themes don’t really crop up until the tail end of the game…but then, of course, that’s just hearsay.

  • LuzariusLive

I don’t own this game or play it on a console. If it was on PC I would need a mod to make Aloy look beautiful instead of mannish.

  • Mr0303

You should know by now that SJWs are never happy. I think the devs made a conscious effort to make the game as diverse as possible and yet they still get this:

SJWs are bad for business (just look at Mass Effect) and I hope devs realise it eventually.

  • Neojames82

*sigh* Why am I not surprised….fuck me these bitches are never pleased and you are fully right, never go after the SJW market EVER.

  • John Tesh

    Worried about your reading comprehension.

  • Phasmatis75

    1) It still hasn’t turned a profit.
    2) Devs already confirmed no sequel. If DLC doesn’t recoop Sony’s lost, I wouldn’t count on Guerrilla still being a studio after this game either.

  • Phasmatis75

They’re pretty pleased and get really butthurt when you point out that the game hasn’t turned a profit yet. They really hate it when you show them the math as well. Right now the game is estimated to still be between 60-100 million in the hole because of the marketing budget and none development related costs. It will need to sell over 7 million units to break even.

  • Mr0303

    1) Citation needed.
    2) Where have they said that? I’ve only found that they stated that Aloy may not be in a potential sequel.

  • Neojames82

    Excellent :)

  • CAT boy

    really ? holy shit

  • Phasmatis75

    1) Game cost 47 million to make (look up average salary UK, employee numbers, liscencing fees (I’m not posting all this information again), and it comes out to about that.

Game after taxes made $56,134,000, most of the profit has been eaten up by engine work, CEO salaries, utilities, and other indirect costs of development.

Marketing is projected at around 60-100 million dollars.Leaving the game roughly 80 million in the hole. A good example to compare this with is Tomb Raider that also turned a profit at around 8 million units, because of marketing as well. Depending on how big the budget was, around 7.2 million sales at $60 will be profitable.

    2) Numerous places. Look up them talking about DLC, those articles tend to contain the confirmation that there won’t be a sequel.

  • Phasmatis75

Marketing bloated the budget and Progressive politics kneecapped the sales. It’s another Tomb Raider reboot. (took 8 million sales to be profitable for that game.

  • Phasmatis75

My sentiment exactly. I’m looking forward to the layoffs involving high level staff and departures we’re going to be hearing about over the next year.

  • Mr0303

    1) Those are not citations. This is:

“Game after taxes made $56,134,000, most of the profit has been eaten up
by engine work, CEO salaries, utilities, and other indirect costs of
development.” – where do you get these figures from? If we consider the 2.6 million sales mentioned in the article that would lead to 150 million paid by the customers, which would translate to some profit, but I can’t exactly tell how much. Even if we accept your number, which I won’t without some proper citations, this means that the game covered it’s development budget.

“Marketing is projected at around 60-100 million dollars.” – citation needed. You keep pulling figures out of the air, which means you are not working with hard numbers and are just guessing at the moment.

    2) I’m sorry, but “Google it” is not an answer. “tend to” – weasel words are not very useful, so source, please.
