Project Sonic 2017 Officially Titled Sonic Forces, First Gameplay

Sega has officially titled Project Sonic 2017 as Sonic Forces.

The news was confirmed during their Sonic the Hedgehog SXSW 2017 panel, and the game was previously confirmed for a holiday launch across PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. Featured above, you can view the debut gameplay for the title.

Sonic Team studio head Takashi Iizuka said the name stems from the game’s core focus: forces. In the game, the forces of good and evil are naturally fighting each other again. Sonic and friends are on one side, while Dr. Eggman and his army are on the other.

Iizuka poises Sonic Forces as “an evolution of Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations,” as it’s being made by the same team. There are three differing gameplay styles including modern and classic Sonic gameplay, with the third to be revealed in the coming months. There will be platforming, exploration, branching paths, and even Red Star Rings.

Sega is building the game in a new engine titled appropriately the “Hedgehog Engine 2,” which builds upon the previous engine and turns it up to eleven – featuring physical rendering of objects, better water and item reflections, global illumination, and more.

The speed looks good. I would like too see what the 2D levels are like.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

    sonic heroes HD?

  • Jumanji Joe

I’m getting tired of this 2d but in 3d gameplay. I just want a 3d sonic like adventures, but not sonic 06.

  • ProxyDoug

Soviet Sonic looks more of the same.
I thought it would be more open world, since limiting Sonic to the same that look out of Crash Bandicoot hasn’t worked so well in the past.

Woah, it really makes you think.

  • OSad

This front facing Sonic shenanigans never sat well with me. Because Sonic moves so fast, it’s hard as hell to see what’s coming towards you, which means you’ll fumble over hurdles, smack your head against walls and miss collectibles.

What sucks is that, it’s legitimately fun to hold down the boost button and try to reach the end of the level like a madman, but to get to the point where you do it with an A or S rank takes a few tries in it. And I dunno, I liked replaying levels when it was to get chaos emeralds in old games but I don’t like doing it here to get red rings, especially when that stuff doesn’t affect the endings anymore.

  • lucben999

I just would like a bit more open levels instead of the on-rails stuff. There has to be a way to make it work with the speed.

  • Uncle Ocelot

There is supposed to be a third gameplay style so here’s hoping.

  • Uncle Ocelot

It looks nice so far, some of the animations clearly aren’t done yet though.

  • OldPalpy

Sonic Team has no idea how do that look at Lost World it tried to have more open 3D platforming and it played like dogshit, how the fuck they managed only manged to make Sonic control somewhat smoothly in their first two 3D attempts but haven’t since is beyond me

  • Kakaku

Goddamn it. More red rings. Never really liked them cause they shoehorn you onto path. I remember a few levels in sonic colors being pretty open so you really had to know where the rings were before hand to get the highest score.

  • Donwel

    1. Because they were flukes.
    2. Because the guys with talent have since left the team because the realised everything was going to shit.

  • John Smith.

So, more of the same old same old I see. This honestly is looking just like generations with the same gameplay, same controls, same looks. Well, its kind of hard to be disappointed when your hopes never even took off in the first place and boy, this doesn’t changed my opinion in one bit.

    So, playstyle guessing time.

Classic Sonic: 2D only. No boost, No wisps.
Modern Sonic 2D/3D on rails mix. Boost and Wisps.
New Sonic: 3D on rails only. Boost, Wisps and *gasp* combat.

  • TylorW

Is it wrong that this level makes me think of Chronicles: Dark Brotherhood’s ending, and that this is taking place right after?

  • Envy Noson

So it’s not Sonic Adventure 3?

  • Malcolm_Ecks

    That was Sonic 06.

  • Neojames82

Was hoping they’d do a Commie Sonic vs. ‘Merica Sonic…

  • wavemotioncannon

Looks really bland. Modern Sonic clashes with everything around him, like he literally always does.
I feel a sort of “emperor’s new clothes” situation when I look at modern Sonic stuff.
Trying to tell a serious, edgy story with him is impossible because he is a giant blue rodent, wearing clown shoes.
Why is that so hard to understand for sega and the fans?

  • Josh

    Yes you are.

Most Sonic/Sega fans do not do the overthinking of it that you do. Yes, he is a cartoonish anthropomorphized hedgehog, he lives in a cartoon world, fights evil scientists with giant robots and can turn into a super golden hedgehog. There is nothing “out of place” about any of these things since they’ve been part of Sonic’s world since day one. If you’re just now taking issue with this after more than two decades of Sonic, you’re obviously not a Sonic fan and never were one to begin with, so why bother complaining about it? You’re not going to play his game anyways.

I’ve heard nothing but praise for the new Mario game that’s coming out in 2017, yet all Mario does is “clash with everything around him” in that game as well. He’s a cartoonish plumber stuck in a realistic world in his new game and I don’t hear people like you lobbying that same criticism at his new game. The reality is you’re just a hipster douchebag who hates on Sonic because you’re trying to be cool.

  • Josh

Looks good, hope it has a substantial amount of content. They’ve been developing it for 4+ years after all.

People complaining about it being like Generations are nitwits. They’ve been saying forever that the new game was going to be just like Colors and Generations, as it’s made by the same team who worked on those games and the gameplay has worked well for them. If it isn’t broke, why fix it?

There’s a third gameplay style coming to the game as well. There’s still a lot we don’t know, we’ll see what exactly they’ll be doing to shake things up a little.

  • wavemotioncannon

Jeezus man, I dont need a credential to criticize a game.

“he is a cartoonish anthropomorphized hedgehog, he lives in a cartoon world, fights evil scientists with giant robots and can turn into a super golden hedgehog”

That is my point. Why do they try to keep him out of his cartoony world and pull him into some modern city or postapocalyptic edgy hellscape (with absolutely random loops, rails and other really convenient architecture) ?. You cant tell a serious story with him. He is a giant cartoon porcupine. He is barely even a character, why try to tell a story.

  • scemar

his running animation and movement don’t seem to really have a sense of momentum, acceleration, mass and all that stuff
kind of a shame, it’d make a good impact and feel like a difference if properly done

  • Loli de 42 Anos

I’m pretty sure the animations are still early. you can tell by little details like: no idle animation, the dust when Sonic runs, there’s only one homing attack animation. my guess (and hope) is that they’ve been focusing on the other more important areas (like stages and gameplay, and saving those smaller details to work out when all the rest is good to go.

  • Loli de 42 Anos

according to Iizuka, while the Boost formula is back, there will be a lot more plataforming in the stages. (plus, this is only the first 40 seconds, they usually start like that to set the tone and give you the rush of adrenaline then usually get more challenging after that. that’s how it’s been in the other games at least).

  • Loli de 42 Anos

Since there’s this whole theme of Forces in this game It would be awesome if they bring the Egg-bosses from the comics to serve as Eggman’s army.

  • Neojames82

It’s because the recent Mario games are usually better than the recent Sonic games.

  • Josh

Sonic has had only two truly bad games, which are 06 and Boom. Both needed more time in development. The rest have been decent, sometimes even great.

“Furry sexual stuff”? Are you stupid or something? There is no “furry sexual stuff” in the games. Whatever the fanbase does is not the fault of the developers.
