Square Enix to Publish WWII Shooter Battalion 1944 This Summer on PC, PS4, and Xbox One

Square Enix has announced they’ve picked up the publishing duties for the Kickstarter-funded World War II multiplayer shooter, Battalion 1944.

The game will launch for PC sometime this summer via Steam Early Access, with a full release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One later down the road.

Battalion 1944 will be published through Square Enix’s Collective division, which helps developers with things like marketing and testing. However, with Square publishing, studios will retain creative control and brand rights.

The game was successfully funded on Kickstarter a year ago this month, netting over $450,000 from 10,000 backers. This was far above their target goal of $142,000, something UK-based studio Bulkhead Interactive said will enable them to build a game that will “challenge the biggest AAA shooters in the industry,” Bulkhead said.

Bulkhead previously worked with Square Enix, for their first-person puzzle game, The Turing Test, which Bulkhead senior producer Joe Brammer said was a major factor in choosing to go with Square.

The goal with Battalion 1944 is to capture the “core of classic multiplayer shooters” while using the “most advanced industry technology.”
