Irrational Games Rebranded to Ghost Story Games

Take-Two Interactive has announced some interesting news – they’re rebranding Irrational Games to Ghost Story Games.

It’s worth mentioning this is the previously reformed Irrational Games, headed by Bioshock creator Ken Levine and a dozen former Irrational Games developers.

The studio’s core mission is described as making “immersive, story-driven games for people who love games that ask something of them.” The company has noted their new games will naturally have a “strong appeal to fans of BioShock.” They’re now able to focus on crafting new experiences where “the gameplay is as challenging as the stories.”

In a previous interview, Ken Levine talked up the game and its influences, saying that it’s partly inspired by games like: Dark Souls, System Shock, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Civilization, and Dying Light. He naturally said that you shouldn’t expect the game to closely follow any one of those games, instead it will be more “in the realm” of some of the earlier games that he worked on.

Ghost Story Games still isn’t ready to talk about their first game, however they have encouraged fans to go sign up to their online community.

Well it’s nice to hear challenging gameplay and actual fucking games brought up because something about this new name makes me think of walking sims.

That… sounds really dumb. I’ll grant you Irrational Games isn’t terribly inspired, but Ghost Story? Why such a restrictive and amateur-sounding name? It screams second-rate indie dev studio.

If only there was a word that describes this seemingly random, illogical rebranding.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

How can you call them “reformed” when Ken “Infinite” Levine is still there?

  • DrearierSpider

Hate the new name, don’t exactly have high hopes for their future games but I’ll keep an eye out. Irrational did great work with System Shock 2, Freedom Force, SWAT 4 and Bioshock. Infinite was a total abortion, but Levine’s all but admitted that and seems to have a lot of regret with that title (at least on a gameplay side). If they make good games, I’ll buy em. If not, oh well.

Reformed my ass. Irrational Games was good, this new name screams mediocrity and online flash games.
