Tekken 7 Paid DLC Will Only Feature “Special Characters”

We previously learned that Tekken 7 wouldn’t get any classic fighters added post-launch, via paid downloadable content. However, it seems like Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada and Bandai Namco aren’t ruling out new post-launch fighters entirely.

Instead, the game’s paid downloadable content will include “special characters,” according to one of the game designers on staff.

This correlates with Harada previously noting that Bandai Namco will not sell classic characters. This leaves the door open to release them as free DLC.

The company is planning a season pass for the game, which includes at least a year of post-launch development and content. Harada also noted that with this season pass, they’ll also be able to do “free updates and support for a long time.”

Tekken 7 is launching across PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on June 2nd.

Well, as long as it is quality DLC it could be fine. Also nice that at least they are doing free content as well.

  • So does that mean we won’t have to pay for the girls’ swimsuits? If so, that means Based Harada is yet again giving SJWs the finger.

  • I’d still prefer more details.

  • luggage lad

the launch roster is already so amazing, I wouldn’t feel bad if they did do DLC fighters for money. I just think it’s important for when postlaunch development ends, they release a “complete” edition for consoles with everything on disk for that game’s offline community.

  • Madbrainbox

All my fighters are in the game already but the more the merrier.

  • Mr0303

It’s pretty sad that Tekken also adopted the nasty Season Pass business model, but at least they won’t be excluding key characters (looking at you WB). The “special characters” may be guests from other series.

  • Malcolm_Ecks

    Still better than Street Fighter.

  • Madbrainbox

Tekken was always better than SF.

  • Sigma

The Irony that Akuma is in the game.

…Although I hope at some point they go all Project X Zone and add Kiryu and Majima.

  • Sigma

better than $300 season passes for costumes…… THAT STILL DON’T GIVE THE FANS WHAT THEY WANTED IN THE FORM OF NIP SLIPS.

  • Sounds like the DOA model where there ended being a lot of “content” from other games and anime series. Bandai owns Namco and Sunrise Inc.

  • 2501

Member when Harada said that he would rather resign Namco than withhold fighters as paid DLC for Tekken. Boy do the times change.

  • I dont think it’s worrying , it’s way far insane from SF or dead or alive LMAO

  • No key characters dlc , just special ones

  • 2501

Doesn’t matter, he’s still holding chess pieces behind a paywall.

  • Pooh Hardy

so special characters most likely reffer to devil kazumi and eliza

  • goodbyejojo

remember when harada said that tekken will never have paid dlc characters? i do

  • Eden

So by “special characters” I’m just going to throw in Ryu, Ken, and Chun Li, maybe even Cammy.

  • Eden

My guess is that many of the special characters will be from SF considering Akuma is in

  • Fenrir007

    >So does that mean we won’t have to pay for the girls’ swimsuits?

That’s where the money is at, so don’t get your hopes up.

  • Quetzalcoatl

This is starting to sound like SF5. Don’t fuck this up man.

  • Xizziano

So characters in the tekken universe that werent playable before? Like that sexy female soldier that didnt get voted for?

  • Xizziano

    How is akuma irony?

  • Xizziano

Themed costumes would be dope, it be better than doa if they werent character specific like doa

  • Xizziano

    “Key characters”? Thas subjective
Tekken using a season pass shouldnt come as a surprise in the slightest.

  • Xizziano

    Not likely

  • Xizziano

    It does matter

  • Xizziano

    Offline isnt a community its a status…

  • luggage lad

    lol

Some fighting game fans favor physical releases with all the content on the disk to take places like conventions/meetups, etc

  • Mr0303

It’s not so subjective. There are characters like Lei and Anna, who were there in almost every game. In fact they made sure to include all characters who were in every game since the first like King, Heihachi, Law and Paul.

It is a bit of a surprise since the Tekken games have always been complete and never had paid characters and the Ultimate edition nonsense that plagues other fighting games.

  • Xizziano

Idc what they favor im not them

  • Xizziano

The roster still changed. Tho ones who have been in every tekken game are apart of a story since every game except for a few are canon. You have bob, miguel, zafina, alisa, etc.

Its not a surprise when tag2, tho it didnt have season pass it had an online pass and dlc. Tekken 6 had dlc i think as well. The main reason why its no surprise is because all games are doing it, season asses are the thing this console generation. Unless its a remaster or a greatest hits with all dlc on the disk already.

  • Mr0303

I’m not sure what you are trying to say here. There are characters who are more iconic than others given that they’ve been in almost every game and part of the story.

Tag 2 didn’t have paid DLC – all the characters were free. Tekken 6 didn’t have DLC.

“season asses” – I’m not sure if this is typo, Freudian slip or intentional, but it’s awesome nonetheless.

There are still games that are complete like KOFXIV and it is a surprise considering Harada’s previous statements that keeping characters as DLC is like removing a chess piece.

  • Matz

Kazuma Kiryu in Tekken, that’s like the thing I always wanted to see in Tekken but never knew I wanted

  • Matz

I’ll pay watever they want if that means that I can play as a freaking Gundam in Tekken

  • Xizziano

Lol the “asses” was a typo.
But I never said tag2 had paid dlc, i only said it had it.
Only the mishomas are apart of a story, its always been about them an who they affected with their actions an intent to kill eachother.
Who u say is “iconic” i dont think their appearance in “every” game warrants that title.
Kof15 is not by bandai so that is irrelevant.
Harada said that about classic characters as paid dlc. Not extra characters that are not vital to the chess board.

  • Mr0303

“But I never said tag2 had paid dlc, i only said it had it.” – the point is that since it was free back then Tekken had no previous history of paid DLC, which makes this Season pass somewhat of a surprise.

Anna has been trying to kill Nina and vice versa for the entirety of the series.

“Who u say is “iconic” i dont think their appearance in “every” game warrants that title.” – so what justifies an iconic character in your view then? If a character has been in all previous games, then people are familiar with him, which gives him that status.

“Kof15 is not by bandai so that is irrelevant.” – no, it’s not irrelevant. It’s an example of a fighting game without a season pass that counters what you stated before that “all games are doing it”.

Here’s the actual quote from Harada:

“Tekken has never had DLC before and charged for it. This isn’t really directed at Capcom, I have always said this, but I see the characters and their move sets as chess pieces – they are essential items necessary in the game and we would never sell any of those individually.”

  • Xizziano

I remember him saying that. This quote sums uo my point, tekken charactersw ill not be paid dlc but dlc nonetheless,We will be buying characters not in previous fighting games, maybe new in the tekken franchise.
A season pass is to be expected this generation, your referring to a time when no games did that. Thas not a good referral for your argument. kof is irrelevant because we’re not talking bout random games by random companies. Not everyone uses the same practice on every game so that is a moot point.

  • Mr0303

“I remember him saying that. This quote sums uo my point, tekken charactersw ill not be paid dlc but dlc nonetheless” – you are wrong. The season pass includes 2 playable characters, which is in direct contradiction to the Harada quote. It doesn’t matter if they are new to the franchise or not.

“A season pass is to be expected this generation, your referring to a time when no games did that.” – that is incorrect. The PS3 era had plenty of fighting games with season passes like MK9 and Injustice.

“A season pass is to be expected this generation” – perhaps, but not from the Tekken series, which have been avoiding that cancerous practice.

” kof is irrelevant because we’re not talking bout random games by random companies.” – so you are going to ignore my counter example because you don’t like it. I can list a couple of other fighting games that don’t have a season pass like Blazblue and Nitroplus Blasters. The point here is that not all fighting games have a season pass like you stated and I’ll quote you again – “all games are doing it”.

  • Xizziano

It does matter about the 2 characters because he was referring to tekken characters not being paid dlc. Wether either if us are wrong its not that serious to even call it a contradiction. He changed his mind, people do that.

Ok so i dont remember those or much of any ps3 fighting games having a season pass

A pass is to be expected period, it doesnt matter what game it is, you should be surprised a game doesnt have one, not counting complete editions an remasters.

Dont presume to make conclusions on your own about what i said and why. Kof is irrelevant because i was talking about tekken and bandai. It doesnt matter what other games an their companies do, they’re not bandai.

When i said all games are doing it i wasnt specifically talking about fighting games, or all of them it was a generalisation that 90% of games do it. Your being unnecessarily anal and literal about what i said…

  • It just seems odd that costumes aren’t mentioned when character DLC was, hence I wondered. Still, I won’t necessarily mind paying for them, I just prefer not to.

  • Daniel Stevenson

T7 on Nintendo switch THE FIGHT stick confirms it yesssssss :)

  • Mr0303

“It does matter about the 2 characters because he was referring to tekken characters not being paid dlc.” – they could be Tekken characters and in fact they are, given that they are in a Tekken game.

“Wether either if us are wrong its not that serious to even call it a contradiction. He changed his mind, people do that.” – what they did directly contradicts his previous statement, so it is indeed a contradiction.

“Ok so i dont remember those or much of any ps3 fighting games having a season pass” – I just gave you examples. You not remembering is irrelevant and argument of personal incredulity.

“A pass is to be expected period, it doesnt matter what game it is, you
should be surprised a game doesnt have one, not counting complete
editions an remasters.” – no it isn’t. If there are games that don’t have it, then it is not a must.

“Dont presume to make conclusions on your own about what i said and why.
Kof is irrelevant because i was talking about tekken and bandai. It
doesnt matter what other games an their companies do, they’re not
bandai.” – so now we are excluding other games, are we? In that case the Tekken series never had a season pass before and its introduction is surprising. You should really pick an argument and stay with it. What you said here directly contradicts the “all games are doing it” position.

“When i said all games are doing it i wasnt specifically talking about
fighting games, or all of them it was a generalisation that 90% of games
do it. Your being unnecessarily anal and literal about what i said…” – unfortunately for you 90% and “all” are not the same thing. Plus I’ll need a citation on those 90%. If it is not the case that “all” games then the statement that a season pass should be expected kind of falls apart.

  • ProxyDoug

Also, Lars was put into a Naruto game once. It would be cool to se the opposite happen.

  • Sigma

OP saying Tekken is better than Street Fighter and Tekken 7 has possibly the best SF character in it.

  • Sigma

Taiko Drum Master was in Yakuza 5. Time for Namco to return the favor.

DOA has a KOF character and some Virtua Fighter characters. So why can’t Tekken have some Yakuza characters. Who does Harada need to talk to to make this happen?

  • MoMo Shinkii

please no need for those ugly SF characters—

  • Fenrir007

To be fair, I’m hoping it’s free as well. I’m not even a Tekken fan or player, but I will probably buy it, and I’m definitely a swimsuit fan…
